Post Doug Smith: Hopla is back - for a bit.

M. Grange ™ and I are standing by the bench pre-game when this visitor from the past wanders by, looking a bit worn out, I must admit.

We both do a double take and wonder, ‘hmm, what’s this all about?’

It was Dave Hopla, the shooting guru/consultant who worked here a couple of years ago and is back, he tells me, just for a couple of days to see what’s up and if he can help.

He’d been an assistant in Washington who got whacked when Flip Saunders came in and cleaned house.

Now, Dave’s a good guy but to think he’s going to magically turn Sonny Weems or DeMar DeRozan into Ray Allen is ridiculous.

Those two kids need to work on their shots and the Raptors must think some gentle coaxing from Hopla is in order.

I remember a couple of years ago we wanted to retain his services, but he wanted an assistant's position, and since that wasn't going to happen, he went to fulfill his dream in Washington.

We need someone like him. Our shooting has been atrocious in the preseason - 27% from three, and 74% from the line.

74% from the FT line isn't that bad.

74% would have placed us 26th in the league last year.
Last year we were #1 shooting at 82.4%.
That's about 2 pts a game difference - could be an important 2 pts in many games. (And we'll probably get to the line even more this year)

That's because this year (so far), you have Evan and DD attacking the rim vs last year we only had Bosh (who is a decent free throw shooter)

At least they are getting to the line...
