Default Doug Smith: "Calderon’s better for this team as a starter"

After being in the T.J. fanclub for the last couple seasons, Doug apparently has now seen the light too.

Back in the day, I really thought T.J. was special and this team could only maximize its potential with him as the starter and Jose coming off the bench. But as their personalities evolve and their games develop, it’s clear to me that the long-term point guard job should be Calderon’s. He’s more steady, gets more people involved more often and, quite frankly, shoots better than I, or a lot of people, ever imagined. And the respect his teammates have for him is immense.

Ford’s probably better as a backup to change tempo but only – ONLY – if he gets his head on right and as we’ve seen these past few weeks, that’s not something he can do right now.

I still say having the two of them would continue to give Toronto depth at a key position but the way things are right now, I think BC has to explore trade possibilities for Ford this summer. What he can get, I have no idea. But asking around would be a good idea.

Not sure when I had the change of heart, just that I did; Calderon’s better for this team as a starter.

Thats an understatement Bel .... with actually having selections in the draft and the likelihood of Ford being dealt, we'll definitely have a new look next season. Not a firesale by any means, but certainly some new blood.

Note to BC:" Trade TJ+Raps' 1st round pick for Crawford+Knicks' 1st round pick..."

Hey... TJ is starting PG on playoff team... that counts for something... doesn't it?

cmon, the writing is on the wall. Doug Smith = Raptor's voice, Doug "thinks" like the Raptors do. If he "think" Jose is better a starter "going forward",it means TJ most likely is no longer in our long term plans.

Wow, you're giving a crumudgeony old beat writer a lot of clout.

I choose to remain skeptical of the accuracy of this editorial

no clout, he's merely expressing the current Raptor's "party line".

... Sigh. So was Doug Smith right or wrong all the time he was a T.J. supporter?

again, he was merely following the party line. Jose is the flavor of the day right now, so it's "go with the flow" .... And as far as I can remember, I never heard Doug openly say that TJ is a better player, and I follow his blog quite regularly. All he does is judges their value in various contexts (i.e. tj is better at this, jose is better at that etc).

I for one will jump up and down on my bed in excitement the day we trade TJ and make Calderon our full time guy. If we can get any value back for him, all the more power to it.

we will get value, because TJ has value. TJ is a great player, but he's in the wrong team. He needs a team that plays a different style. Of course, his injuries are a concern. But as high as the risks are with TJ, his contract is relatively small. For some teams, it will be a choice between no point guard at all, and an excelent point guard, at a decent price, but with a higher injury risk.

You know I do really try hard to like TJ Ford but no matter what, the more I surf the web and read some of things that come out of his mouth just makes me that much more sick. I follow a few teams and I can't really remember disliking a professional athlete like I do this squirell. He's so far away from being a team guy its sickening.

This latest quote from Me J, "“We have that winning attitude, winning atmosphere,” said Ford. " this came from Mike Ulmer's blog. Does this squirell really think that we are as stupid and arrogant as him.TJ get your head out of the sand...... TJ you really do think that you are starting because you earned it ? I said before and I will continue to say it as long as TJ Ford plays in the NBA I continue to jab away at his character.
