Doug Smith: Bargnani's all hype

I know most aren't fans of Doug's work, but do you agree or disagree?

Not bad guarding bigs, a terrible help defender. And until he gets it on a consistent basis, hype is all itís going to be.

i dont mind the bargnani selection and i know we've got to give him time to develop...
but all that talk about being the "next dirk", thats what all the hype is about... and its soooooo not going to happen.
i actually see him more as a Pau Gasol type.
big frame, can slash, decent jumper, average rebounder.
but again, thats just more hype.

the real question is, would you still pick him #1 overall again if you had the chance?
i tell you what... aldridge is doing big things in portland.... to the chagrin of Dr J.

Acie 12-03-2007 12:59 PM

I wouldn't say he's hype, but he's definitley not done what I've expected of him this season, but then again we're only 17 games in.

Benzo 12-03-2007 01:09 PM

Bargs has dissapointed me this year..he doesn't seem to be his cold-blooded self. I am willing to admit though, that I expected too much out of him. I am willing to give him time.

Superjudge 12-03-2007 01:42 PM

he'd average 25 a game on a weaker team. He's having mentel issues.

he'll be fine.

Belsius 12-03-2007 01:51 PM

Hes got the talent, its just a matter of time, but I have to say that he is the player that is annoying me more this season, he has being so irregular.

Ball Don't Lie 12-03-2007 01:55 PM

If we keep running plays for him and he keeps getting comfortable knowing where his offence is going to come from I have no doubt he'll start becoming more consistant and a huge threat on the floor EVERY night. Hes missing shots he always makes right now, he'll come around. The big thing for him is just improving on his help defence and getting on the boards every night, his offence wont be a problem for too much longer IMO.

Claudius 12-03-2007 01:55 PM

I still think his skill set isn't being used properly. The guy is, well put frankly, a magician with the ball. Put him at the Centre spot, a position that he is being forced to learn along with the added pressure of defenses adapting to you then you could just see that this year is more about "learning on the job" than it is about producing.

I don't think it's a coincidence that when he plays the PF position in games he looks more comfortable than he does when he is playing the Centre position.

rapsfan087 12-03-2007 04:23 PM

I think he is learning, and the errors are normal in these moments. He needs time to get all toghether.

INSIDER 12-03-2007 04:37 PM

if this is another "confidence" issue I'm going to barf....
every rookie we've had in the past 5 years its been the same shit.... confidence... blah blah blah....
Hoffa - give him time he just lacks confidence...
graham - he needs to be more confident in himself out there...
bargnani - blah blah....

this is getting so annoying!
why does this seem to be the reoccuring theme?
is it a coaching issue?
why the hell is this the case again and again...?

bargnani looks scared on occasions and seems to be dropping off after last season.
this was supposed to be his break out year, but he looks even more of a rookie on some nights.
his confidence seems at an all time low.

The problem with the hype that is associated with Andrea is that it was substantiated by personality tests and other cognitive reports I could never understand. If you recall, there was an article a while back that tried to define the it factor and establish how Bargnani's potential ran off the charts. If you're interested in the read, it is a highly interesting and informative article - you can find it here.

Part of the issue is that we have all seen glimpses of greatness from him. Certain mannerisms or plays that reveal a possible basketball giant in slumber. And granted, all young players have flashes of brilliance that we can admire, but Andrea supporters insist that some of the things he does, he really shouldn't be capable of doing.

Andrea may be a natural basketball talent, the type of player that fundamentally or instinctually feels the essence of the game. Perhaps spending a year absorbing new information and fundamentals has clouded his ability to simply tap into his talent. Sometimes when you're thinking too much about the steps, you trip over your own feet. This really all is speculation on my part, but I think Andrea really is trying to figure out who the heck he is on the court. I don't think it's hype so much as it was expecting too much in too little time.

BballWatcher 12-04-2007 03:53 AM

My mind is totally all over the place on Andrea. Right now I'm leaning on hype dipping even into the bust category with how lethargic his play has been of late.

But then tonight against the Cats he didn't play, lending credence to the theory that he's been more hurt than he let on. Still, I'm of the mindset that for 99% of stars, they're good right off the bat or almost right off the bat. Shaq came into the league averaging a 20/10. Ditto Duncan.

On the one hand, Bargnani was young when he came into the L and adjusted to the NBA game. Perhaps now is his adjustment phase where he's out of his comfort zone (like Bosh in his first couple of years where he was forced to play minutes at center).

But on the other hand, what's with all the 2-14, etc. nights? What's with the off balance jumpers, the fading shots against guys 6" shorter? When I watch him sometimes he doesn't seem interested in making a play. He's unselfish to a fault. He doesn't have that burning desire to rip out the other team's throat.

Basically if Bargnani's production doesn't improve over last season we're in serious trouble. He was much better last year before his burning appendix was taken out than he's been this year, aside from maybe the first two games.

Krazy Ivan 12-04-2007 08:53 AM

Bargnani will be OK... IMO biggest problem is that both he & Bosh are perfect as PF not to play as old fashion back to the basket 'big' guy... just imagine if Glen decided to pick Wade instead of Bosh... Bargo would be in perfect situation then...

Thanks for the article, lang.
About the bolded sentence, I read that Sam said right now the guy had a lot of stuff running in his head, and he needed to go on that track all the time to get his best level. I agree with Sam here, he needs to learn the center job and that spends a long time (I think that is a spot at which experience is gold)

moremilk 12-04-2007 11:31 PM

I don't think Doug is saying that Andreea is all hype - just that he's hyped. Playing center is not easy - especially NBA-style center for an european player. Even american players have issues, bogut is only now starting to "get it", howard too - and they at least have some college/high school experience. For Andreea is twice as hard, because he not only needs to learn the new stuff, he also must "forget" some of the old habits.

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 12-05-2007 08:49 AM

Andrea has some serious skill as a basketball player but he does seem shaken this year. I believe a player has to earn their minutes and deal with what the coaching staff has them do. If moving between starting and bench has shaken him...deal with it! He's a pro now, making 4mil and if he wants to play minutes he's gotta show up. I think he'll get a comfort level but i like Rasho starting for this team this year and I like Bargnani off the bench.

Kuzzy 12-05-2007 06:28 PM

Bargnani, hype?
Well Doug Smith is getting WAY ahead of himself on this one.
Yes so far Bargnani has been a dissapointment, but now lets be understanding.

Bargnani: Came back from a serious *apidectimy* injury during the playoffs and struggled which, completey dominished his "swagger" on the court.
Secondly with all the attention from the media comparing him to Dirk Nowitzki and expecting him to pull some kind of 21-9 in only his SECOND SEASON!!!

Personally, i have been dissapointed with his consistency... sometimes i get pictures of a 7-1 morris peterson instead of the promising andrea bargnani...

But like many other fans I still believe hes going to come back during the season and get into the swing of things, as a starter... all he really has to do is toughen up on D-Boards and always stay confident... the mechanics are already there!!!!

3 and a half years later.. ahhhh :sigh:

fresh n' spicy 03-27-2011 11:52 AM
