Default Doug Smith: Bargnani needs to suck it up

Would you agree with Smith and think that we're coddling Andrea or do you think we're just being cautious?

Timing is cool, though, because Bargnani's supposed to practice today and -- lo and behold -- may play this week.

Was talking to a guy about him late last week and it was suggested he's like a fine sports car, a Ferrari maybe, that doesn't run nearly as well and is kept in the garage if just one little piece isn't functioning. Thing is, he's not a Ferrari, he's an NBA player and sometimes NBA players suck it up and tough it out. And play.

Not to say this hyper-extended knee isn't swollen or a legitmate concern. But everyone connected with the team will admit Bargnani's recuperative powers are, um, not the greatest.

Bargnani still has a chance to be a great -- not good, great -- but he's also got some learning to do.

In general I think fans are too soft with Andrea. They whine that he's not starting and feel sorry for him...well he's a player and he needs to fight for his time on the court. I agree he's a bit soft when it comes to injuries but i cut him some slack because he's young and growing..but if he wants his starting spot and 35mpg he's gotta fight for it... play through pain, bring it every shift, rebound and defend.

I'm not too soft on him that's forsure .... if anything I don't think he deserves the praise that many Raptor fans give him on a day-to-day basis. I personally don't think that he'll become this centre that Raptors management wanted him to be when they drafted him last season. He'll always be a SF in a centre's body and until he shows us he can play in the post and also rebound like a centre should, he'll continue to disappoint me.

Personally I like how he was used last year. He was a matchup nightmare and for all the 3's he hit he was acceptable on defense... I would rather see him play the outside game and let Bosh be the downlow scorer than trying too hard to change what got him here.

I have no problem with that SWN, but considering how weak we are on the glass its a huge liability for us and those 2nd opportunity chances and Bosh isn't aggressive enough to fight down low by himself. I know this is sad for me to say, but I feel more confident on both ends of the floor when Rasho is playing centre as opposed to when Andrea is in the 5 spot.

That's what Moon is for. We're actually not as bad on the glass this year because of Moon and Delfino... we're over 40rpg and the differential is shrinking Moon needs to become more active on offense which would allow Bargnani to play the picks and behind the arc(dead center) without exposing anything.

I agree about Rasho..i love his game and think she should be getting at LEAST 20 mpg. I have no problem with the three of them on the court at once either to be honest... but we both know Rasho is only around for one more year so unless we find another Rasho... AB must be groomed, at least on the defensive end to play his role..which i think he can handle. Offense, dont' mess with what works I say.

He has a little more than a bruise.

If he could be out there, he would be out there.

or am I missing something.

A hyperextension is worse than a bruise. Hyperextended knee means the joint bent backwards, or at least further backwards than it's supposed to ... that involves a lot of things like tendons and muscle... i'm no doctor but it's worse than a bruise. The point is AB has a perception of being a bit soft and slow to heal. Impossible to say for sure in this case, but he's been out a while.

Im not even sure if I was being sarcastic or not, because I certainly know what a hyperextended knee is.

I think were too quick to judge athletes when they are hurt.

But then, maybe he's soft too.

tough call.

AH, his knee was hyper extended.. shit, I kept thinking it was a bruise.. I was thinking to myself "Jeez, what a fuckin pussy".. hyper-extended knees (hell, hyperextended anything) are tough to deal with. Especially in a sport when you heavily rely on your knees. I just hope he can be well enough to play come Sunday's grudge match (cause obviously he;'s not playing Wednesday versus Dallas)

I've been a bit harsh on Bargnani myself. The other way. I think he does need to play through the injuries, if they're minor.
But, this guy is an integral part of whatever we do, and he would be for a lot of other teams in the league. as was pointed he's a matchup nightmare when put in a position where his unique array of skills are utilized. I went and watched some highlights from last season and his game if so multifaceted. he's an exceptional passer, can dunk, drive, hit pullups, stepback threes, block shots.
His weaknesses are obviously rebounding, toughness, and playing on the block with his back to the basket. I think people make these out to be, including myself at times to be more glaring than his strengths. One thing I've been noticing, that to me is the biggest problem with his game is that he's rushing. He just looks anxious out there. He isn't letting the game come to him.
An example from last season was a game against the bulls where he pump faked a three, got ben wallace in the air, and then HESITATED for a second to see what the help was going to do. they didnt close out and he took two dribbles and went in for the dunk. he waited to see what would develop, which i think for me is missing from his game. he's shown that he's an intelligent player, capable of making decisions, but for some reason this year, he's been doing the opposite primarily.
I still think this kid is the centre of the future for this team and i think he's going to revolutionize how we think of that position. i think the controversy a lot of the time if over a tradiitionalist way of looking at the centre as a guy who commands the paint, blocks shots, works the low block and all of that.
well if that was established as thew way, then why not have a centre that has the size and shotblocking ability but can also put the ball on the floor, create, hit threes. let the other team adjust I say.
There's been some people we wasted a pick on this guy. who should we have taken, aldridge? watching those highlights from last year, in the context of all the lowlights, Bargs does things that other seven footers can't. he's one of those rare guys that comes along with the potential to completely alter the way a position is played, well at least has the potential to. i know that sounds like a bold statement, but i honestly see that.

We all should take it easy guys, pro atletes get injured all the time. Sport injuries today are treated with much more caution. Remember there is alot of money invested in our gladiators , returning them too quickly can cost them more lost games. Athletes today do a better job on listening to what the body is telling them and the medical staff is doing a better job when it comes to rehabilitation. Note when Bargs and the medical staff both agree that he is ready to play he will play. This has nothing to do whether a player is a pussy or not, health issues should be between player and medical staff and when Bargs is cleared to play it will be a great day in raptor land.
