Thumbs down Doug Smith: All star weekend is too exclusive

For normal folks and run of the mill fans? Book your time on your couch now or expect to stand behind some barricade watching the swells go to all the big events.

Look, it’s not a bad thing and I’m glad it’s coming to some degree because it’s a wonderful city that will get to show itself off but it’s an NBA event, the league takes care of its people, its sponsors, its “partners.”

From my experience, I would suggest that perhaps 20 per cent of the tickets – and that’s a generous estimation – will be available to either of the two big nights.

Sure, there are player appearances that go with it and you can buy tickets to spend money at the JamFest and that’s a crowed barrel of fun and, yes, there are a lot of people here.

You know what it’s going to be like?

This is TIFF compressed into three nights, lots of celebrities in the city, lots of sightings, lots of paparazzi and lots of glamour.

But at least at TIFF, moviegoers get a fair enough shot at any ticket they want.

Not the case on an all-star weekend.

It’s a good thing because it will open some NBA eyes to what the city has to offer – February weather permitting, of course – and if stalking celebrities and NBA players is your thing, it’ll be blast.

But to think everything’s open and available to regular people and that you can rub shoulders with them? Guess again. Heck, last year you couldn’t even get into the players hotel without a credential and those security folks didn’t mess around with interlopers.

It’s a fun weekend. For some people.

And you all need to know this and remember it and understand it:

When you are reveling in this news and all happy that MLSE did something cool, take a second to know this process was begun and shepherded by Bryan Colangelo and Tom Anselmi.

This did not happen in the last four months, it is a years long process and without those two men, it doesn’t happen

I dislike Smith but he's right. This takes a lot more than a couple months to bid. In fact it's a couple years.

they've been trying for a while to do it, but the decision was made now
TL must have had a huge part in us getting it, BC may have laid the groundwork and his league connections were probably a big plus too.

but I doubt the decision was made while BC was still here

Of course not, don't think anyone said it was.

yeah, but the implication is that BC did the paperwork and TL got the approval, hard to tell how important BC's contribution was to all this.

Well, given he's probably been looking at this for a couple years and that it takes a while (probably around 2yrs) before a bid is approved and that during last season league officials were here looking at the logistics of the proposal it stands to reason that he had a pretty decent hand in this. Also take into consideration his family name throughout the league.

I believe this was in the works for the last couple years, TL came in and finalized the deal. Now however it happened or came down, BC haters won't give him enough credit, his fans will give him most of the credit which is also not accurate I would guess. Both men have major connections in the NBA and they both helped get this done along with new ownership. To what degree did each have a hand in it, honestly I don't give a fuck.
