Arrow Doug Smith: ACC not adequate to host All-Star Weekend

Quote:
Someone was asking me Sunday night about the feasibility of an all-star game in Toronto.

Simple answer?

No.

Yes, the cityís great and has lots of hotel space and convention floor space and clubs and restaurants and thereíd be every chance itíd be warmer there than it was in Dallas.

The issue is the Air Canada Centre.

Itís a good building, with good seats for fans in a nice downtown location and most things work well in it.

But itís too small. No back-of-house space.

Heck, there arenít even enough dressing rooms for the folks who sing and dance, let alone all the stuff they bring with.

Honestly, the scope of this all-star thing is huge; people, props, stuffed animals, more people and props. The Air Canada Centre, for all its charms, simply doesnít have the facilities to handle everything smoothly.

Heck, when the Raptors get into the playoffs, they have to feed the media in a hallway Ė single tables stretched out along a wall Ė because the joint canít handle the extra people.

I canít even guess what itíd be like with an all-star game and, if they apply, I bet the league would have some concerns.

Sorry.

Besides, we keep hearing that after Los Angeles next year, the new arena in Orlando might be a host and so, too, might New Orleans be so you could be looking 2014 at the earliest anyway.

Maybe Maple Leaf Sports applies and gets it for a long-off year and, who knows, maybe they do the Saturday at the ACC and the game at the dome but Iíd be surprised.

Wait, what's that building next to it? Oh, it's the SkyDome or I mean the Rogers Centre. I'm sure MLSE could work something out with the Rogers Centre.

He's 100% correct.

ACC even with its upgrades this off season is just to small to host a NBA All star game. NHL yes NBA no. The NBA all star weekend is 10x more spectacular with celebs, half time performances, events through the weekend then the NHL all star game.

The Rogers center possibly... but its still a shithole considered to some of the newer domes around the U.S these days, Especially after last night at the Cowboys dome. Wow

Of course they could. There is now way in hell ROGERS would'nt jump on the chance to host a NBA Allstar game.

I don't see it happening anytime soon.

What did the NBA do before holding the All-Star game at a football stadium?

BTW, didn't Toronto hold the NHL All-Star game at the ACC in 2000?

D. Smith is coming off an All-Star game in a football stadium and needs to put things in perspective. Betwwen the ACC and Rogers Centre it would be easy to do. Even though i detest the Rogers Centre.

I dont think Smith thought this out thoroughly.

It may not be the biggest ever, but it can happen in Toronto.

I think the NBA is just looking to do bigger and better things in newer/bigger arena's.

What i wanna know is though... How much bigger is Staples center then the ACC?

Edit:

Basketball Capacity
Staples center: 18,997
Air Canada center: 19,800

Ya i was thinking that other venues were not much bigger seating wise. But, the actual size of the arena is a dffrent story. The Acc is one of the smaller ones around 500,000 sq ft. I know some american areas with similar seating capacity are up to 800,000sq ft

I think that's what Doug Smith was implying.

The NBA probably looks at other stuff then just seating capacity and it looks like for media / athelete capcity its just not up to size.

Now if only the Buffalo Bills move to Toronto and we build a new dome on the Island we could have an NBA Allstar game no prob

if the square footage is the problem than I don't care
Im sure whoever built it was concentrated on having an arena they could use for 30 years in a good location rather than an building used once even every 30 years

If the Leafs and Raptors had worked together from the beginning, we'd have a more adequate facility.

no thats actually not the case. The real reason is because the size of the land they acquired to build the ACC was tight. But its better then having the ACC out in the EX or in the burbs.
