Default Does Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment care about winning?

High ticket prices for a bad team, Always trying to stay mediocre, Not spending any money for draft picks. Good management and ownership is existant within successful organizations. I look at the Leafs and Raptors and I see teams that are running on an endless treadmill. I feel that all they care about is milking of off the fanbase as much as possible.

I do see a (seemingly) endless treadmill, but I don't think (in the case of the Raptors) that it has anything to do with being unwilling to spend. It is true that the Raptors have not spent into the Luxury Tax, but they haven't really had a reason to: not a good enough team.

I don't get this type of comment, which is said quite a bit. How are they always TRYING to stay mediocre? Who actually tries to stay mediocre?

High tickets for a bad team? Stop buying them, and they'd go down themselves.

Always trying to stay mediocre? Wrong.

Not spending any money on draft picks? True I suppose.

Caring about milking off a fanbase as much as possible? That's the goal of every business, they aren't running a charity.

I think a more appropriate thread topic should be, is MLSE cursed?

MLSE spends money to make money...

care about winning? ... to some degree yes because winning also brings in money... so yes they care... but end of the day it all relates to revenue coming in...

MLSE would be glad to dip into the luxury tax if it means the end return would be more of a profit....

High ticket prices? Yet those tickets constantly sell especially for the Leafs, a team that has done almost nothing significant in 44yrs. They'd be stupid to lower tickets when they sell them wether the team is good or bad. Maybe a thread should be started about the fans of MLSE teams?

As for not spending, you don't go into the tax threshold TO try and contend. You need to already be contenders and go into the tax to try and put you over the top or keep you at the top.

are Raptors tickets selling really hot right now? GWhat about actually caring about filling up the arena? Cuban makes ticket prices lower just to fill up the seats.

Having spent well is the responsibility on the GM who are hired by MLSE. They haven't spent money with the Raps either trying to go into the luxury tax while they had Bosh. All they did was allow mediocre signings and trades.

Look at the Leafs, the team is ready for a rebuild, fans are ready and they go out and hire Brian Burke, someone who doesn't want to properly rebuild a team through the draft and before him, they had JFJ.

Obviously MLSE cares about money because that = more money but they haven't done a good job. They have failed to recognize what the team properly needs whether that's a smart/better GM who can properly build a winner. They have done a good job growing the brand/product or whatever but they have failed to build a winner and that does fall upon the responsibility of the owners.

I swear there was a thread like this before lol. I don't see this team as being a treadmill team, they've tried to get to the playoffs like blowing up the team the past 2 years. They're trying to win and get it done. High tickets prices? I swear Raptor tickets are cheaper than Leafs ones.

I've only ever been to two Raptors games and even they were upper bowl. I'm sorry but not everyone can afford 100+ bucks every game for some decent seats. Go watch some other teams on their hometurf and you'll realize how much more we pay.

I think they have made it clear they only care about profit. They have had more than one chance to build a winning team, but failed every time. Either that, or they are really fucking stupid.

are you going to blame MLSE's spending habits on picking joey graham ahead of danny granger? how about rafael araujo before andre iguodala, al jefferson, and josh smith? did MLSE not drop a boatload on turkoglu? get off it son

Averaging 16-17k per game with our record is just fine.

well you're proving my second point which is they are fucking stupid, and incompetent. we'll see what they with this team now that you can still have a young team and be competitive.

Winning is good for business. The Jays are still trying to ride the highs from 92 and 93.

There was a time when winning wasn't high on the Leafs' list of priorities. Anyone who says otherwise is delusional. You don't hire John Ferguson, Jr. if you really care about winning. If you really care about winning you don't take that gamble. Now they care, but they've been such screw ups for so long that it permeates the whole organization and even saviour Brian Burke can't put a stop to it. It started with Ballard, continued with Stavros (regardless of the early 90's success, which they only did when they felt they were losing their grip; voila, Leafs Nation! I still have my Leafs Nation placard-on-a-stick they gave out at game 7 of the 1993 playoff series against St.Louis) and then on to the Teachers and Peddie.

MLSE has two options.

A) Spend a bit of money to keep their teams mediocre, yet still make a boat load of money.

or

B) Spend a lot of money to make their teams contenders and a shit load of money.

Obviously they have chosen option A).
