Just wondering what people's feeling are about this in light of his strong play to start the season.

Say for argument's sake that he ends the season top 5 in assists (league-wide) and remains along the leaders for asst/TO ratio.... is that enough to keep him? Do those numbers make his salary more palatable?

depends entirely on the free agent market. if you get better by dumping him, you do it. if you don't, you don't.

I still say he's gonna get hurt down the road this season due to the schedule. And it'll derail whatever he's done this first month. I also think he won't be our starting PG next season, now whether or not he's the backup or not remains to be seen. I remember BC being asked about the amnesty around training camp when he was on the fan590. He said he hasn't ruled it out, and that it depends on what deals are available to him through trade & FA next summer. We'll have 10Mil in capspace going into next summer, and if a deal makes sense for us i have a feeling someone will be amnestied and he makes the most money next season. I think the idea of having 20Mil in capspace instead of 10Mil will very much intregue Colangelo. I also believe that he doesn't see Jose here long term as this franchise tries to compete for a championship or at least playoff success. So it's either keep him as a ten million dollar backup next season and have his salary come off the books in 2013, or trade/amnesty him in the summer of 2012 for added capspace. My bet is he won't be here next season, how that happens is anyone's guess.

I also think we need a more uptempo PG going into next season, he's too damn slow, especially if we get a young SF through the draft (Barnes?) or trade/FA. Maybe he could work as a backup, but i don't know if he sees himself as a backup either.

mike - how can you be so sure. i mean, if deron williams were available at $14 mil, would you say no, you'd rather keep jose at $10 mil?

The team has a lot of cap space for next season, so unless the team is going to try to sign two high-profile FAs, it doesn't make sense to use the Amnesty clause on Calderon. Plus, JC only has one more year left on his contract, so he could possibly be used in a sign-and-trade scenario.

Jose is not sexy.

Jose's cap hit is not sexy.

Jose re-signed at half the price is a little sexy (could provide some sexy flexibility).

On that note...

As stated above, it depends on whether or not sexy cap space can be used to make the team sexier. If no sexy FAs are willing to sign, then you might as well just keep him, re-sign him to a cheaper, sexier contract. Maybe the Raps acquire or draft a young, potentially sexy PG who still needs seasoning. Jose as a back-up, who is capable of filling in as a starter if needed in an emergency, could be useful, although maybe not sexy.

lol this has to be an rf record for the most sexys in a comment.....it makes it extra creepy that its in a thread about jose caldy instead of dealing with the daily rf girl of the day....now that would make more sense

also in order to go into true rebuild, i think it would be in best interests of team to amnesty him or get rid of him by seasons end...

it pains me to say because he works his ass off, loves the city, and is probably straight up the nicest guy on the team (possibly the league), but hes reached his ceiling and wont be able to be that top tier pg we desperately need.

Plus right now hes playing really well and his value is arguably as high as its ever been.....considering how big his contract is, we might be able to get something worthwhile in return right now, especially if we trade him to one of those contending rich teams who don't care about the cap hit and willing to go over the cap year after year (lakers? mavs? etc....)

the answer is probably not

we have no reason to amnesty him unless we have a chance at howard/deron etc next summer. Otherwise, what good is having cap space if we're not using it. in 2013, I can easily see jose resigning here to be a backup to whoever we choose to be our main PG, and let's face it, it doesn't get better than Jose as a backup PG.

the only danger is a trade, especially if he's playing well in the new few weeks.

Regardless, I would like to see Jose back with us in 2013 and have him finish his career as a Raptor.

the problem is those teams don't have much to offer, a late 1st rounder is probably as good as it gets. And they'd have to have expiring contracts worth at least 5 millions.

if we have cap space and the opportunity to sign a difference maker, and colangelo doesn't use it, he should be fired immediately. this is the year for us to spend, because in all likelihood it will be years before we see this kind of cap space again. i'm quite sure that he knows this.

given that there are a couple of really good names and several pretty good names on the market this summer, we should be doing everything we can to add talent to this team. if $1 of jose's contract prevents us from doing that he's completely expendable.

OK, I will take off my Jose Supporter hat for a second...

Yes, if trading or amnestying him means upgrade to the PG position (which Deron clearly is), I'd do it. I won't feel particularly good doing it, but I'd do it.

Hat goes back on...

However, simply dumping him or trading him hoping Bayless or someone of his caliber will make this team successful is pure folly. To me, when healthy, Jose is a top 10-15 PG in the league. Consequently, the replacement'd better be in place and it'd better be good...
