Do you think we tend to overrate our players?

It's funny that not too long ago, most of us, myself included, thought Bargnani was a long-term piece. At times, when someone criticizes a component of one of our young players/prospects game, we tend to get really defensive and blinded by the potential without noticing some of the glaring deficiencies in their game. It’s things like this, that prevents us from selling high on certain players. Valanciunas is a really good prospect, but for BC to say he's going to be the franchise player one day is way too premature. Heck, if someone mentions that Drummond might turn out to be better than Valanciunas one day, their comments are viewed in disbelief. Someone drops 20 points on 11 3pt attempts and some of us go crazy. There are some of us that think DeRozan's going to become an "elite" shooting guard based on his work ethic alone. I wish BC would stop overpaying for players that are mediocre at best and understand the concept of selling high on certain players.

We as a fanbase, understandably so, want our young players/prospects to have long successful careers with us, but do you think some of us tend to overate our players to the point we refuse to sell high or let go of them based on that potential alone?

Do you think that we (media, fans, management) tend to overrate our players?

Like most fanbases it's all over the map. We overrate some while underrating others. We also give up on some player really quickly while holding onto hope that players that have been here for a while will all of a sudden get us a lot further than ever have before when nothing they've done has ever shown they will. And also like most fanbases a win even in a shit season and your shit players look better.

DonMughal 12-15-2012 08:37 PM

Everytime I think of us overrating our players I think of Jamario Moon, Joey Graham and Sonny Weems. People thought for a few weeks that Weems was the second coming of Kobe LMAO

And I know I'm forgetting plenty of other guys too.

js12 12-15-2012 09:33 PM

For sure. We give in to hype too easily.

Remember when Casey was most impressed by Alabi during summer workouts, and some of us thought he was going to get in the rotation?

Blaze 12-15-2012 09:37 PM

Duh, every single fan base in every single sport does it. On the other hand we also underrate guys who play bad for us.

Even some who play good.

Jeff you are finally on to something here....you got it fucking right......you over rate all all our new fucking guys only to see them fall on their ass. Geeze was the question meant for you ???? I will also agree with you on this one pal !

shenmui 12-16-2012 03:23 AM

Yes.

Dario 12-16-2012 04:33 AM

ofcourse we do, we need to give ourselves some encouragement :cookie:

RaptorsandBuckeye FaN 12-16-2012 04:35 AM

Ha, yeah! Every fan base does it though. That is sports, you always think your team/players are better then they truly are.

To get a good value of the player, take what your fan base says about him and then what other fans bases say about him. Split those two things down the middle and you got the right answer!

rapsmannn 12-16-2012 06:31 AM

not really, i think has to do more with the culture, team chemistry and basic lack of effort

take not of belinelli in chicago, guy is playing well but when he played with the raptors he could barely stay on the floor, i don't think he is much better then he was then, i think the team he plays on knows how to utilize a player to there best ability

bargnani is a far better player then belinelli, and now look at the difference of how there both playing

Bit offtopic: Sonny is doing fine past two years in Euroleague, averaging 16,5ppg and 5rpg (30mpg), that's almost double what he was doing here in TOR.

Someone of a bench. Someone who's made 10 3s in two last games, who was seen as 4th option at the SF position by coaching staff and most of non Lithuanian fans.
Seriously, I'm the only one who gives too much credit for that someone, but it's just because rest of the forum doesn't give enough, so I see myself as some kind of a balance maker :sigh:
We definitely overrate Derozan compared to non Raptors fans.
Don't think we overrate JV, especially in the first weeks when he was drafted (epic underrate) :cookie:
We underrate Gray
We overrate Ross
By saying We, I mean You

I understand the Kleiza love but come on.. Your just making a douche of yourself. He has been inconsistent, and proved nothing so far. He had a few good games and hopefully he can stay on that level. If he's this good, he'll surely find a place i the rotation.

Gray is crap
Ross is a future starter
And by saying that you just look like a turncoat ass.

EggsToTheBBQ 12-16-2012 11:01 AM

I think we tend to add potential to the value of our own guys much more than we do to other team's.

JV for example, everyone here loves, but to be honest he is probably the weak link in the starting line up right now.

Ross is very inconsistent as a shooter, but we over rate him because we know the potential is there.

Now, I really like Ross and JV long term, but replacing them with veterans would probably result in more wins short term.

So, when a fan of an opposing team is sizing up the Raptors for the next game, I don't think they should be too worried about JV or Ross, but we over rate them because we're invested in the team for more than one game.

That said, Ed Davis is a good example of the opposite. I thought that people calling for him to be traded were nuts, but there were definitely a lot of them - I don't know why he wasn't getting potential added to his value like JV and Ross are.

So, it goes both ways, but I think some of our guys are definitely over rated by the fan base.

Dapp 12-16-2012 11:28 AM

The rookies? They are the ones that actually deserve the benefit of a doubt here, imo. Both Ross and Val showed flashes of what they can become. A constant double double threat and a guy who can make 20 a game? Might not seem like Shaq and Kobe, but hell, still solid.

LX 12-16-2012 01:11 PM

They are overrated until people turn on them.

It all comes down to how everything fits together as a team, but with so much that doesn't fit, we end up taking this or that player's side. Yippee - basketball in Toronto.

carp 12-16-2012 02:12 PM

It's always easier to see either the highest potential or the biggest warts of a player's game.... it's normal.

raptor86 12-16-2012 02:58 PM

Yes simply because of the fact we haven't had a bonafide superstar since vince left. Just because Bosh and Bargnani were supposed to be the best on our team doesn't mean their elite players in the league.
