Do the Raptors have any shot at top 3 in the East?

...this year?

Don't jump all over me for being too optimistic just yet. There is a long way to go and although we've now seen an extended period of consistent play there is always the possibility of a slide.

That being said, Orlando and Boston have not been playing well of late. There is a good article on ESPN about their game last night.

Quote:
ORLANDO -- On the surface, this was NBA excitement at its finest. Two contending teams battled down to the wire, with Orlando coming back from 16 points down to beat Boston 96-94 on Rashard Lewis's layup with 1.3 seconds left.

Scratch away that thin veneer, however, and this was one of the most depressing games I've ever seen. The story here wasn't the result but how it happened, because it told the story of why both the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics are miles farther from a championship than they imagined at the start of the season.

The news accounts will tell you Lewis drove the baseline for his game-high 23rd point to win the game for Orlando. What they won't tell you is how four former stars conspired to create that moment by laying their weaknesses bare before a national TV audience, and what a dramatic impact those four players are having on their respective sides.
I'd like to know if any of you think there's a shot, even if a remote one, of making a run at top 3 in the East.

I don't think so. They're too far ahead I think. They have to fail in order to give the Raptors a chance. But challenge them in a 7 game series is a different story.

Btw I really dug that article.

Allow me to provide an alternate account of the game's key play. First, Lewis only ended up with the ball because former All-Star Vince Carter cemented a horrid evening of awfulness by failing in the simple task of freeing himself to receive a pass at midcourt.
I'm not even a VC hater but that's just too funny

btw he got a turnover one possession before that

Not a chance.

No way we'll catch Boston.

This year I think there isn't any chance, but the next, if Bosh remains and our young guys continue their development, can be the good one

No chance of being top 3 but very remote chance of being top 4. Orlando is not as good as last year and Howard still is a defensive beast but what is aroud them isn't the fit of last year they do miss Hedo getting him easy baskets.

No way in hell were getting into the top 3. Top 4 however could be a different story if we continue this play...

For me to think about this team as even a top 4 East team they're going to have to continue playing the way they are i.e. good defence, good ball movement, beating teams they should beat as well as win these games:

Fri. Feb. 26th v. Cleveland
Feb. 28th @ Oklahoma
Mar. 9 @ LA Lakers
Mar 28 @ Miami
Apr 7 v Boston
Apr 9 @ Atlanta

They win those games against elite opponents and most on the road then I really, really start taking this team seriously.

Well well.

I'm the resident old crusty cynic, yet I am only one of two people that think it's entirely possible for toronto to end up 3rd, or even second.

None of Atlanta, Boston, or Orlando started anywhere close to as badly as the Raptors, yet, just past half way, Toronto is only 5 wins behind Orlando, and 4 wins behind the other two.

A lot has to go right, but honestly, these guys aren't winning fluke games, they look downright unstoppable of offence a lot of nights, and they improve almost week on the defensive end. Sure, there have been hiccups, and there have been many bad, slow starts, but that aside, there have been way more positives than negatives in the last 25 games.

Anything is possible.

And 3rd is not as unlikely as people think.

So let me get this right.

What your saying is that if they continue to play at about an .800 pace, beat all the top teams, in THIER barns, and finish with close to 55 wins or so, THEN you can maybe take them seriously.

Holy shit.

Tough crowd.

True but look at it this way: top 4 is on course for losing less than or around 25 games in total if they keep their W-% up. That means Raptors have to win almost everything unless one of them gets in a slump (or stays in it, which would be Celtics). Fat chance imo.

I think they can finish fourth seed at best..
but either way, I want them to finish fifth.. I want Orlando first round
out of all the top teams in the east, raps match up against the Cleveland's and magics the best

We don't have much of a chance at #4. We are currently where we're likely gonna end up, 5th. And that's if we stay healthy and stay as is.

As long as there is a mathematical possibility, there is a possibility. Anything can happen to those teams ahead of us, and they just simply aren't that far ahead of us.

Now if they don't move up, but gain some distance on the teams below them, I'm not going to be disappointed.

And for the life of me I don't know why the Celtics would keep Carter from getting the ball.
