Default Dino Nation: Raptors vs. Sixers Rivalry Reborn?

Just reading James' most recent installment at his blog he discusses the potential of the Raps and Sixers rekindling their rivalry from a couple years bock. You guys think it has to potential it did from back in the VC vs. AI days?

Quote:

In the history of the Toronto Raptors their have been few rivals for them over the years. The first was likely with the Vancouver Grizzlies for who was best in Canada. Despite the Raptors having far more success they would always seem to have the odd slip up at the hands of Vancouver. The other rival the Raptors started to develop was the New York Knicks. The teams had made several trades with each other over the years. The also had met in back to back playoffs with the Knicks winning in a sweep only to see the Raptors return the next year and knock them off. The New jersey Nets based on the Vince Carter trade have become the biggest rival of the Raptors. A playoff series a couple years ago would build on that rivalry in which the Nets won in 6 games.

But perhaps the best rivalry for the Raptors was the short lived one they had with the Philadelphia 76ers. They both did battle in one of the best 7 game series in the NBA in recent memory. Allen Iverson and Vince Carter had a personal war on the floor. Both scoring in the 50ís at various points in the series. You had the entire back story that some fans knew in that the year Iverson was drafted number 1 that pick should have been the Raptors. But due to the expansion agreement the Raptors signed they would pick #2 and take Marcus Camby. It seemed that Iverson would always be at his very best vs. the Raptors and it only seemed to rub salt in the fact he could have been a Raptor if not for that agreement. Isiah Thomas the Raptors G.M at the time claims he would have selected Camby with #1 pick regardless but we will never know. But it was just another little sub plot of a great short rivalry.

Well the time for the rivalry and itís re-birth may be here. The core of this rivalry for the modern version goes back to the Rob Babcock Era. Andre Iguodala he would be stunned to be passed on by the Raptors for Hoffa. It was truly one of the worst choices Babcock made. Iguodala has always took it personal and always is fired up for the Raptors based on the snub. So for him the Raptors have always been someone he circles on the calender.

But now as this season approaches a lot of talk around the league about the Sixers who manged to steal away Elton Brand from the Clippers. The Sixers were perhaps one of the best stories of last season. They looked like the same old to begin the year. Raptors had no trouble in knocking off the Sixers 3 times in the early season schedule. In fact the Sixers lack of success would lead to the firing of G.M Billy King. His replacement would be Ed Stefanski who would leave Nets to take the job with the Sixers. After King went out the door the Sixers would start to rebound and meet and exceed the expectations that people had for the team entering the season. It would go so well that the Sixers would make the Playoffs and even shock the Pistons and take the opening game of their playoff series. So this off-season Stefanski was looking to build off that success and he manged to sign Elton Brand.

Bryan Colangelo had already rebuilt the Raptors back to a playoff team. But a second straight playoff exit would prompt Colangelo to take action as well. He would end the debate about his teamís point guard situation. He would trade Ford as part of package to bring Jermaine OíNeal to Toronto. He hopes that OíNeal will be healthy and ready to get back to the All Star level player he has been in the past. The Sixers are hoping that Brand can get back to the M.V.P type season he had prior to his injury that took him out for almost all of last season.

The Sixers and Raptors are both looking to take that next step to contender in the Eastern Conference. You would be hard pressed to find anyone that would give Sixers or the Raptors to win the Atlantic Division over the Boston Celtics. So the best possible outcome for both the Raptors and Sixers would be a 3rd or 4th place finish in the Eastern Conference and home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. But just like the NBA ad campaign from the playoffs last season there can only be one.

Oneal and Brand cancel each other out.

The Raps will pump them again.

I wouldn't underestimate that Sixers team, but the Raps certainly have the tools to compete with them this season.

BTW, Miller is a nice point guard. I wouldn't necessarily say that Jose > Miller, to me it's a wash.

Yeah, Miller is great.

I think it runs even deeper with Dalembert on the Sixers and Rautins being the broadcaster for the Raps.

I always considered the Raptors main rival to be New York - not jersey or Philly. They were main rivals when T.O. were the Huskies and there have been more classic moments involving the Knicks than any other club in the Raps brief history.

Um, are we talking the same #5 Point guard league wide, that Jose???

If so, you're on the pot!

I hate all the love the 76ers are getting in the press where as the most of the media is like "Toronto who?"... At the end of the day they'll be slurping the Bosh, O'Neal, Calderon trio while they call them OVER achievers. Typical.

we've never had a rivalry with the sixers. we had a play-off series against them, and even then it was just about iverson and Carter scoring 50 point games.

why are we so desperate for a rivalry? there's only a handful that actually exist in the nba.

The best sporting event i've ever been to was game 6 of that series vs the Sixers, the ACC was rocking with rowdy fans and even giving the business to some sixers fans in the crowd, fun times.

Wow, I would love to have this rivalry come alive again, obviously it died in recent years with Philadelphia trading Iverson and missing the Playoffs for a few years. Now that they are back in the championship hunt, the 76ers and Raptors Playoff series in 2009 would be something to watch.

Cause Rivals make sports fun. It makes an average game mean a little more. In the NFL I am a Cowboys Fan(Like CB4) and no matter the records a Redskins vs Cowboys game means something to fans. I think with Sixers and Raptors being at the same spot looking to move up the ladder in the Eastern conference it could lead to a nice Rivalry for years to come.

The difference here is we're forcing a rivalry upon teams (or attempting to anyways). Rivalries occur naturally, not just arbitrarily choosing teams. The fact that we're even discussing "who" our main rival is demonstrates that we don't have a natural rival to date. Hell, for a while I thought our biggest rival were the Milwaukee Bucks.

I totally agree.

Personally, as a fan - nay, as a Raptors supporter (to use a soccer term meaning more than a fan), i get just as hyped up for any regular season game that the Raptors are in. I don't care who we play - as long as we crush them.

NJ games are a little crazier, but maybe that's more a player rivalry than a team one. Either way, if i had to force it, NJ would get my vote.

And great point Claudius re: no natural rival.

Jawai and Hump is equal to Reggie Evans?
Moon or Kapono equal to Young?
Solomon = to Louis Williams?

yuck.

I would point to the fact that Toronto has a natural rivalry with NY. Fuck, almost everyone in Toronto has a relative or friend that lives in NYC - then there's the 2 playoff series, the couple of years in mediocrity in them, and Toronto is always considered the "New York of Canada". Not to mention that there are also many Knick fans that come up for the games from Western New York. Whenever the Knicks come to town - whether they're bottom feeders or not, there's always an electricity in the building.

Well said and this is why I picked them. This thread isn't about picking the team who challenges the Raptors the most, it has a lot to do with emotions and history.

Yeah, you can argue Philly and jersey are the top rivals but honestly, in the Atlantic division is there a team that more fans enjoy watching the Raptors crush or a team that pisses off fans more to lose to than the NY Knicks? I don't think so. I and all of my friends always watch the Raptors play the Knicks, they're games we all look forward to.

I don't feel that about Philly. I don't feel that about Jersey. I love seeing Carter lose but at the end of the day I don't care about jersey either. Not compared to the Knicks anyway.
