Default DimeMag.com: DeRozan starts R.O.Y. bid in Vegas

Quote:
Guys like Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry and Brandon Jennings are making headlines with standout stat lines, but one of the most consistently impressive rookies in the Vegas Summer League so far has been DeMar DeRozan. Four games in, he’s steadily improving — last night DeRozan put up 20 points on an efficient 9-for-16 from the field (56 percent) against the Suns — and is showing he’s got more to his game than running, jumping and dunking. (Not that he didn’t throw in a couple highlight-reel bangers.) With Anthony Parker headed to Cleveland, DeRozan should be Toronto’s opening day starting two-guard, and between Jose Calderon and Hedo Turkoglu’s playmaking, and Chris Bosh drawing double-teams, DeRozan should have plenty of opportunities to succeed early. Don’t be surprised if he makes a darkhorse run at Rookie of the Year like Eric Gordon’s last season …

Too early to tell. If he can get good minutes and evolve then SUREEE. But as of right now probably not

He's far off... Look at Evans, his team plays no D and scores a lot. Flynn will have the ball in the biggest part of his playing time. Griffin will go for at least 18/8, and Thabeet 10/10/2

DeMar averages 10ppg in his dreams

Actually I can see 10PPG being very realistic...If he starts he's on the court with two superb, selfless play makers in Calderon and Turkoglu. If he's on the bench he may get plays run for him on a nightly basis. He will get opportunities to score points.

There is no way Griffin is losing ROY. I think Evans should be effective for Sacramento, so I think he will be the best non-Blake Griffin rookie. DeRozan isn't going to be getting as much minutes as other guys and his stat sheet won't look as impressive, which is fine. I'm more concerned with how he plays defense, not how much points he can get.

Unfortunately, even if he kills it on defense, he still won't get the trophy... we're just too good on offense for him to have a major contribution, and people will look over him for a rook with a more prominent role on his team.

I don't know about Griffin. Hes an amazing player, but let me tell you this, the Clippers will fuck it up like they do with everything else.

I don't care if DeMar wins the ROY or not, I just want a winning season for Raps!

I voted no. But anything is possible, and if he starts @ SG next season and gets 25+ minutes i can see him averaging 12+PPG/5RPG and at least being in the discussion.

I just don't know if i want him starting? Alot will depend on what Colangelo does with the Delfino situation and if he doesn't com back BC will need to add another wing player imo. Because if DD is starting, our wings off the bench would consist of Wright/Douby/George..... Which means little to no scoring, add to that Evans who'll be lucky to average 5pts???

i say no because someone like blake griffin has a bigger skill set and is also on a team where they suck and he can get as many shots as he wants
demar is on a team where he is supposed to slowly develop behind cb4, bargs, jose and now hedo, with 4 guys like that getting all the touches, it makes it very difficult for demar to put up the numbers necessary

I don't know if DD's role on this years team will be significant enough. He'd have to put up better stats than other rookies who will be more of a focal point of their teams offense such as Griffin. If he comes in and works his tail off defensively and the team improves in that department then he's sure to get recognition for that.

I think he'll have a significant roll. Especially if Delfino doesn't come back.

If he starts he'll be the 5th option in every half-court set. It might be better for his numbers to come off the bench, which is what they should do with him.
(Unless he's head and shoulders better than any other option. If he comes into camp and blows people away they can't hold him back).

i tell you what, if DD puts up solid numbers and the raps are a winning team, he'll get a lot of love.
griffen, evans, flynn, etc all play on shit teams that will be rotting in the league's basement... rookies who contribute to winning teams get more respect then you think when it comes to ROY voting.

Yes DeMar DeRozan will be right in the hunt for Rookie of the year.
Sky's the limit and he will start at SG next year. With his 6'7 215lb
frame and off the chart athleticism, good mid range game and a
solid mix of offensive moves this is what we have been missing.
Evans and Griffin will get double teamed every game and the advantage
that Demar DeRozan has is that nobody expects him to make a good
splash because we have multiple scoring options. Where he will
thrive is getting open looks when Bosh, Hedo and Bagnani get double
teamed. He has already had easy transtion baskets in the summer
league and I expect that to increase once Jose starts finding him
for easy ally oops. He is also a solid defender.
He is far from a finished product but he is good enough to compete
with the other top players in the draft.
Who was the last Clipper to win rookie of the year?
HMMM...

Except for Melo.
If I remember clearly he took the Nuggets to the playoff his first season.
And lost.
Two words....King James, every rookie was in his shawdow. And I expect it to stay the same, if griffin can avg 17/18 ppgs he has it locked up. He already has the basketball media's attention, he just has to produce.

Than why was Courtney Lee not even invited to the Rookie/Sophomore Challenge and didn't get voted into the 1st or 2nd All NBA Rookie team?

Quote:
The first team consists of O.J. Mayo of the Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago's Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, New Jersey's Brook Lopez, and Miami's Michael Beasley. Rose and Mayo were the only unanimous picks.

The second team consists of 6 players due to a tie. Los Angeles Clippers' Eric Gordon, Minnesota's Kevin Love, Miami's Mario Chalmers, Memphis' Marc Gasol, Charlotte's D.J. Augustin, and Portland's Rudy Fernandez make up the All-Rookie Second Team.
All worse teams than Orlando, and Lee played "solid". Surely not RotY material, but imo it shows rookies on winning teams don't necessarily get more 'love' for their team's record.

Way to early for this. Lets see him on the coart in a real game first and see if he's even a starter or backup... He may end up being the #3 SG for all we know...
