Raptors Dime Q&A: DeMar DeRozan Talks Raptors, NBA Draft & Lockout

Quote:
Dime: What are your plans for the summer?
DeMar DeRozan: For the summer…rest a little bit, hang out with my family a little bit, than back to work. I’m going back to Cali to chill for a little bit, see where it goes from there.

Dime: What’s one thing the Raptors need to build on going into next season?
DD: We showed spurts this season that we can play with the best teams in the NBA. We just got to be consistent with it and just go out there and go at each and every one of our opponents like they are one of the best teams in the NBA. Just stay more consistent, and once we get that down pat, we’ll be alright.

Dime: Heading into the NBA Draft, what players excite you? Who do you think would fit in with your current Raptors squad?
DD: It’s tough to say, but I like Kemba Walker’s game. I played against him in high school. Just the way he plays, I think he’ll make a major impact in the League using screen and rolls and being able to shoot and break down guards and everything. I like Kyrie Irving too, he’ll definitely be big. But I think there are just a handful of guys though.

DeMar's obviously hinting that Walker and Irving are the "handful of guys" that he wants on this team. Didn't mention Derrick Williams.

If we get the third pick its guaranteed to be Kemba Walker. Welcome to the Raps, Kemba.

Kemba is a skilled player, but I question his court vision and passing ability.

3rd pick, you gotta go with Kanter! If he could contribute like Cousins, that would be a great selection!

But, if Minny picks first, Wizz second and raps third, Irving could drop to third spot?? But I still think teams are gonna select the best player available and deal him for lower pick + another player and a future pick...

If we get Kanter. There better be some major move after it. Otherwise i'll be on the fire BC bandwagon.

Yep... I don't feel like waiting 10 years for him to turn into a mediocre player. Kanter = Most overrated player in NBA history

What are you smoking? He has incredible quickness to stay in front of guys, and steals the ball alot. He plays great on the ball and team defense. He knows where to be on the defensive end because of his high basketball IQ... and hes an aggressive defender. He is by far a better defender than any PG we've ever had on this team. If you actually think anyone can play worst defense than Calderon you are truly delusional.

I'm going to guess you NEVER watch college basketball.

There is a difference between quickness (the quick change of direction in order to break down your man) and lateral quickness (moving side to side by the shuffling of feet in order to stay in front of your man). One being extremely important on offense, the other being extremely important on the defensive end.

It's a well known fact that Kemba struggles defensively. Whatever team picks him will pick him knowing he's not a defensive stalwart. Just because you're not very knowledgeable and don't care to admit it, doesn't mean I'm smoking anything.

Calderon shouldn't even come up in conversation as it will more than likely (assuming we don't aquire a point guard in the draft) be Bayless that is starting for this team next year.

Do your homework before you call someone "delusional". Maybe then you won't make a fool of yourself.

For someone who watches college basketball you should know he has incredible lateral quickness. Also, a well known fact he struggles defensively? Why, because he completely shut down guys like Brandon Knight? Yeah I guess that makes you a bad defender. Also Calderon does come into the conversation because he started most of the season. Tell me what Kemba does bad defensively 'Mr.College Basketball'. I guess you don't like aggressive defenders.

your comparing a professional guard to a college kid who hasn't played a lick of nba basketbal...is vastly undersized and plays average defense at best...

but then again, you are the person that said JJ is better than artest in his prime, and JJ is better than paul pierce...

I've only seen Kemba play in a couple of games, but it's easy to read what scouts have to say about him (LINK).

Defensively, he plays in your face on the perimeter, and his quickness allows him to keep his man in front of him ... His athletic ability and defensive awareness get him 2 steals, which illustrate his ability to read passing lanes ...

Defensively, he's quick and moves well, however his lack of size at the next level will allow other guards to shoot/pass over him ... Lack of strength might allow others to push him around against taller, stronger guards ...

etc...

I kind of thought it was interesting that Derozan singled out point guards, but maybe they are just guys he's familiar with.

do explain...

we have a huge hole at center...so if we can get a kid like katner, who plays around the rim, is a good rebounder, physical, has size, and plays good defense, why wouldnt we get him?

hes the type of frontcourt player we have been missing for years...him and ed would be great....

When did I say JJ is better than Artest? JJ is in fact better than Artest in alot of areas anyways. And JJ is better than Pierce.. for this team. Where would Paul pierce get us? A few more wins yay... he is on his way out. Kemba is quick enough to stay with defenders, get steals, pressure the ball.. don't know what else you can ask for. Tell me which NBA point-guard plays lock-down defense nowadays .. not many. As for guarding guys like Rose, not many people can do that anyway regardless of your position.

He hasn't played a game in years, and with the lockout he will sit out for another year. You really want to take a gamble on him? Go right ahead.. he will get us nowhere.

Kanter sounds like a Hoffa 2.0.

He's only 18yrs old, hasn't played in quite some time and imo would be a gamble. Plus i'm not a fan of drafting another big as i've stated several times. Now, if we drop a couple spots then maybe take him then, but if we drop to 5th or 6th i'd almost rather trade the pick depending on who's still available.
