Did we miss out on Gasol?

Chad Ford did an article in the ESPN Insider (which is still free right now) on 10 teams that had the goods to get Gasol.

Now, keep in mind that most rumblings involving Gasol were prior to Bargnani's recent tear. So keeping that in mind, would you?

Carlos Delfino ($1.8 million expiring contract)
Juan Dixon ($2.5 million expiring contract)
Joey Graham ($1.6 million)
Jamario Moon ($770,610)

Why the deal would have worked for Toronto: The franchise is high on Bargnani and Moon, but Gasol alongside Chris Bosh would have given the Raptors one of the best front lines in basketball. Given the strength throughout the roster, the Raptors would have been real competitors to the Celtics and the Pistons.

Why the deal would have worked for Memphis: The Grizzlies would not have cleared a lot of cap room, but they would have received some very interesting young players, especially Bargnani (the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft) and Moon, an older rookie who is likely to be a first team All-Rookie selection this year.

I was one of the proponents for a trade that invovled Bargnani and Gasol, but I dont' like the deal suggested with Delfino included and would not make it as constructed. Take Delfino out and put cash in and even with Bargnani playing the way he is i make it.

If thats what was offered, then all we missd out on was getting fleeced in a major way.

MangoKidHoops 02-05-2008 03:04 PM

Look at the core of the team: Bosh, Ford, Calderon, Bargnani - those guys are 25 years old. Gasol turns 28 this year and makes Toronto a "go for broke" kind of club. I would say in about 2-3 years would be our time to make a move like that. Gasol doesn't make this team THAT much better..besides, that's A LOT to give up. Delfino doesn't expire this year, does he? I thought it was next year. That's the kind of package you put together for a 25-year old emerging superstar.

Nice of you to drop by SJ. I missed you. :wavey:

Totally agree, by the way.

I still think we should have traded Bosh for Gasol and Memphis's first rounder (Conley)...:batman:

Ouch. I'd go nowhere that one. That's a steal for Memphis.

And with Conley, you'd also have Ford and Calderon..talk about a logjam.

Acie 02-05-2008 03:20 PM

Yeah because having three points capable of starting and another Euro-pussy is a great idea.

Could have used the pick for anyone...Yi, Brewer etc....or takin Cinley and traded one of TJ or Jose....Or traded the pick...you see where I am going here.

am i the only one who thinks Pau Gasol is overrated?
18/9 woooooo fucking hoooooo.

the guy plays 60-70 games a year.
i'm glad we didnt get him.
he's a 28 year old playing in a 32 year old body.
he'll be a great fit for the lakers, but on TO, i dont think he'd be worth the trade.

You're not alone my friend. Hell, Spain won the World Championship without him playing. :p

Ah true, but they had the porno player(with three good legs)! :batman:

Superjudge 02-05-2008 03:36 PM

whats wrong with a 32 year old body?

you do know that theres life after 25 right.

fancylad 02-05-2008 03:37 PM

Jeez, that's quite the offer that ESPN has drawn up.

Why don't we throw a couple more players too?

Anyways, now that TJ is back, we can start to see that depth is one of this team's biggest strengths. You'd be losing quite a few key pieces of that puzzle all for one player.

And i think in two years Bargnani will be more of a player that Gasol. And that ain't the pasta i had for lunch talking.

Superjudge 02-05-2008 03:39 PM

Agreed.

Thats a major fleecing

nothings wrong with 32...
geezer!

i picked 32 because i see him putting up decent numbers for only 3 more years... then its all downhill.

the guy looks beaten out there... i'd be realy surprised if he plays more than 65+ games a season for the next few years.

how many did he miss this year? last year?
its a trend and its getting worse.

Dr. J. Naismith 02-05-2008 03:42 PM

I think such a deal like Ford proposed could be considered "Babcock Part Deux". :(

BTW, nice to see you again SJ. :)

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 02-05-2008 03:45 PM

I know it's pointless because we didnt' make the deal but i bet he's rejuvenated, healthier, happier and more productive now that he's on a winner. I think he could return to allstar status with guys like Odom, Fisher and Kobe dishing to him...I dont' like the guy's attitude but having him and BOsh right now would have made us better. Anyways, BC's plan is to develop Bargnani so that's good enough for me.

Superjudge 02-05-2008 03:50 PM
