Default Devlin: Moon Likely To Start Again This Season

Take it for what its worth considering this is coming from a RealGM member.

Im quite happy with this as I feel that we need Kapono's scoring off the bench since Jermaine will bring an additional scored to the starting 5. With Bosh O'Neal and Moon, the Raptors should improve drastically in the category of rebounding. This will give opponents less opportunities and ultimately result in the Raptors giving up fewer points.

What do you think about Moon in the starting 5?
Thoughts?

I said in another thread, if Moon is a starter on your team, your team probably isnt a real contender.

Why?

Moon isnt a horrible shooter, if hes open he can make a good perentage and defensively he is far superior to Kapono.

I think it's open going into training camp. But one thing to keep in mind is that Moon will be playing for another contract/raise?.And if he impresses in training camp and comes in,in great shape it might be his to lose.Especially if he comes in with the mind set of driving to the hoop more.

And if he has a good first 30-40 games he may be a player that can be moved at the deadline in a package.

So you'd rather have Kapono start instead?

I see Kapono as our starter, but he will likely split minutes close to equally with Moon, depending on whether we want defense (Moon), we want better shooting (Kapono), or we just want to rub in the victory (Graham).

If Bowen could be a starter on a contender for years, so can Moon.

I'd still rather see Kapono start, for reasons stated a number of times already.

Repeat after me: the Raps won't have a "second unit" this season...

Moon isnt Bowen, people may not like Bowen, but he is a shutdown defender in every sense of the word. Moon has a ways to go before he can claim that. Spurs also have/had a few people that can create their own shots so you could have a guy like Bowen in there, Raptors really dont have anyone that can, we truely need a swingman that can imo.

And yes, if Kap can step up his D a bit, i would def start him.

Kapono is actually a good defender within the team concept. One on one not so much, but really if you're not Ron Artest, Bruce Bowen or....you're a mediocre defender at the 3. Kapono really isn't that bad.

But Raps as a group have QUITE a way to go before they can claim to be the Spurs, no?

Look, I am not comparing Moon to Bowen defensively, but Jamario has all the tools to become a Bowen-like player for the Raps. He is far more athletic and has a better shot already, just needs to work on his already above-average defence.

I'd still start Kapono. Considering that both Bosh and O'Neal can operate one-on-one from either high or low post, that's all the "creativity" you'd really need in a half-court. Those two on the blocks, Jose, Parker and Kapono at the corners of a triangle waiting and set to shoot an open three-pointer - even Smitch should be able to run this offence.

I think Kapono's talents are wasted on the bench. If he's not playing with Bosh and Jermaine at the same time then other teams can afford to shadow him on defense. This means few open shots, just like last season. He'll shoot a high percentage but the problem will again be that he won't get enough shots.

Wh says he wont be. Smitch is going with one of JO and Bosh on the floor at all times with Bargs taking the other spot. Kaps will always be playing with a low post presence.

hehe, agree. I wouldn't mind that Moon and Kapono were alternating the starting spot depending on what team we play against.

Mo Pete started on the Hornets last year... Luke Walton on the Lakers... Oberto on the Spurs.

Moon's fine. And we're not contenders yet anyways.

I don't think it matters who starts but who plays the biggest chunk of minutes at SF!
Moon is athletic and he can guard decently SFs but his jumper is not falling all the time! Kapono is a much better shooter but be has trouble guarding SFs and has hard time driving to basket. I would like to see Moon and Kapono sharing the minutes and to have % of SF time depending on the match ups!

Thats not the point. Other than the playoffs Kapono only put up nice numbers, outside FG%, when he was playing with a lineup that had two guys who can draw a double team. Thats the scenario when the other team can't afford to have a guy shadow Kapono. The single low post presence isn't going to be enough to get guys off Kapono. Thats how I see it based on last season.

When a guy shoots over 50% from the field you should be trying to feed him as many open shots as you can.

+1

Not to menton it's nice to use Moon's rebounding ability off the bench when CB4 or JO are off (can't assume Bargs will pick up the slack at this point).

+2 the fact that kapono played great during the palyoffs is a big factor, and the fact taht he hits 3's 50+% of the time is another big factor. As long as kapono can get some open looks and great 3 point chances i say who cares if he starts or not, as long as he is able to take mroe shots thats all that matters. Kapono is liek the king of 3's in the nba right now and his shot si so amazing. Where ever he can get the shots is where he sould be.
