The development of Valanciunas

Quote:

The Raptors will send assistant general manager Maurizio Gherardini to Lithuanua this month to begin working with Valanciunas.

Lietuvos Rytas, for its part, has been open to the Raptors’ involvement with Valanciunas. “They were pretty clear during the discussions, prior to the lockout, that there was some reluctance obviously to us having any kind of input or presence, basketball-wise,” Colangelo said. “But they had no problem with the other aspects of things. Anything we could be doing to help him, to supplement some of what he was already doing to have him ready for the next step, they had no problem with it. You don’t want to put yourself in a position where there is any kind of animosity from the team toward the NBA club. They might see it as interference, and we have been careful not to do that. We just want him to be as developed as he can when he comes.”

Very disappointed with Valančiūnas this season. No progress has been made since last season and i would call it a slight regression. Coming to NBA this season would've been best.

This isn't good. Didn't he win player of the year though? He's still a youngin, hes got time.

He did. It was based on fan votes, though. So having in mind what kind of hype is here in Lithuania around Jonas it doesn't surprise. He probably deserved POY reward, though, but only what concerns his game up until the end of EC. It seems that Lietuvos Rytas isn't interested in developing him anymore, as they basically can't get any more money out of his contract. He isn't starting anymore nor is involved in Rytas offense...

That's alright.. he's learning how to make his way without being the primary option.... it's a learning opportunity.

That's what happens when you have coach from former Yugoslavia. Their philosophy is based on guard play and perimeter shooting. Combine that with shot first PG who is not good in pick and roll and Jonas is limited to whatever situations he creates for himself. Rytas is simply not utilizing his skills properly this year which leads to somewhat frustrating stat lines but at least he is playing through it and gaining experience. It is not going to be easier first year in NBA either, I doubt DeRozan, Bayless or Bargnani will be looking to pass him the ball either, so he better learns how play solid man to man defense and to live from garbage around the basket - put backs, rebounds and hustle points. And he needs to stay healthy, eat well and hit weight room - I read that he was sick with some kind of flu for last coupe weeks or so and played through it.

Pretty good game for Jonas today, even if Rytas lost vs best club in Europe CSKA Moscow. 10pts, 11reb, 2ast vs Kristic/Kirilenko/Kaun front line.

Any centre who rolls hard to the basket and is capable of catching on the move and finishing at the rim will get the ball on this team.

this isn't that concerning to me, guys that go to the nba usually get held down by the team they currently play on

jennings didn't start on his italian team, goes to the nba following year and almost wins rookie of the year

rubio, once he was drafted became a back up, stats didn't look good, now he is in the nba he is a game changer whenever he plays with the wolves

see what happens with jonas,
