With Batum right now, our wing problems would have been solved. By amnestying Amir, we would have also had Calderon and Bargnani as trade chips.

We should trade anything to get him... #2 overall pick, hes already better than any SF we have... especially for the future.

so batum at the max isn't overpaying but Bargnani at 10 million is a monstrosity? #perspective

I'd still be willing to give Williams a chance.

He'd be another nice to piece to add to our young core.

No way they trade him for anything less than Ross. Which we would be loathe to do since Ross seems to have already proven more. Likewise I don't know why we didn't just on AK47 when we had the chance. He literally would be the difference right now between .500 and our current predicament.

Yup.

Lowry/Calderon
Derozan/Ross
Batum/Fields
Bargnani/Davis
Valanciunas/Gray

You can then trade Jose/Bargs for the best package possible. Preferably a backup PG + Backup Center or PF. But essentially you wouldn't be so hard pressed to try and trade them for a bonified starter, just the right pieces off the bench.

Agreed, AK47 would have been a great vet presence as well as still being an above average SF. So depressing to think about the way we spent that money....

As for Batum, RFA time wasn't the time to get him... it was well before that. As of being right, I wasn't the only one... I think even JeffB started to advocate for him after I brought him up as a viable alternative!

Just a subtle jab Jeff, just cause you tried to toot your own horn!

HAHAHA, Ross? You gotta be kidding... I'd trade Ross for him instantly. Then trade Bargnani for Gasol...

Lowry/Jose
DeRozan/Fields
Williams/Anderson
Gasol/Davis
Jonas/Amir

^^Looking like a good team already.

First off, I didn't ever characterize Bargnani's contract as a "monstrosity." I think he still has value and it's just time to trade him. If you're acquring someone via RFA, you're more often than not going to have to overpay him in order to force the team not to re-sign him. Would I have offered Batum the max in the offseason? Hell no. 2013 offseason would be a different story. He was intially offered 50 million over 4 years with incentives from the Twolves before the league denied the incentives. The Cavs reportedely offered a lot as well. The max anyone can offer him besides the Blazers was 4 years at 58 million. I'm fairly confident there would be more than one team willing to offer him the max if he were headed to RFA this upcoming offseason based on his performance thus far.

I think you're half right...... he can matchup against some SF's, but he needs to be quicker to defend most.

Wolves' Derrick Williams hopes slimming down brings game up | StarTribune.com

Read that.

He has the skill set to play SF... he isn't just a PF. Players aren't exclusively one position for the rest of their lives. Instead of reading wikipedia and taking it as the #1 fact, think outside the box.

I've watched him in college and a few pro games. I've never really been too impressed by him and I just never understood the hype that he had when he was coming out of college.

Williams has talent and had some nice moments during the NCCA tournament. But, had he entered the draft a year later, I suspect he might have fallen much further, maybe even outside the lottery, depending on team needs. It's the exact opposite for Jonas, who probably moves up 2 or 3 spots if he waited a year to enter the draft. Timing can play a big role in hype and draft position. /captain obvious/
