DeRozan's emerging post game

Quote:

It is possible that no phrase is more popular among casual basketball fans than “just drive.” As in attack the rim, don’t settle for the jump shot. Of course, if it were easy, everybody would do it.

DeMar DeRozan is making the effort, though. He decided to refine his post game this summer and enlisted his cousin Shaun to help. Shaun, DeRozan estimates, is 6-foot-5 and about 260 pounds.

“I have a big cousin and he always guarded me when I worked out,” DeRozan said Tuesday. “And I told him to foul me, do whatever he can to try to stop me. So he definitely helped me out a lot, understanding what I have to do on the offensive end.

“He gets credit every time I score.”
Quote:

“I just understand I’m bigger than a lot of [shooting guards] and a lot of nights I’m going to have an advantage,” DeRozan said. “I watched a lot of Dwyane Wade this summer, tape on him understanding how aggressive he was, especially last year, not shooting as many jump shots every time you get the ball.”

In an attempt to diversify Toronto’s half-court offence — not every play can be a pick-and-roll — Casey will call DeRozan’s number in the post more often this year. Casey bemoaned the lack of strength of his young players often last year, and DeRozan’s response to that was pleasing to the coach.

this is a sign of this kid's maturity. how many sg his age do you know who think to develop their post game? he has the athletisicm to not have the post game and still get by, but he wanted to improve, and he improved in the one spot where few think to, and where the gains are massive. If he can be effective in the post, ala wade, at this age? not only does his game get better, but this team gets a whole lot better just because of the added versatility on the offensive end. Now his defence, really hope he worked hard on that...

I am really loving seeing demar going to the post, and then that turn around jumper, which has gotten so much better.

Bang on - he's really impressing me so far, he may still have a great future ahead, I was ready to give up on him last season. If he can do it in the real games, he'll be in the running for MiP, especially if his defense improves.

No one is talking about DeRozan's defense in preseason.
It had been great!

Very true.

He's easily been the most impressive Raptor to me next to Jonas in the pre-season. Really looks like he's made the commitment to get better and take his game to the next level. I just pray to God that this is a permanent change and not just a "contract year" type thing.

Fingers crossed ... hope he develops as discussed
Either way, you know he is busting his butt to improve.

I thought this was going to be about his improving interview skills..... or his success with the honeys in the late-night VIP lounge.

but yea, he seems more confident on and off the court, already he is a better speaker then vince.. hopefully he can be as good a player

I think with the emergence of the post game, you could run an offence similar to what the Jazz ran in the 90s.

You have already employ two PG's who are comfortable running the play in Lowry/Jose, you have a stretch big in Bargnani, a developing low post player in Val and a wing player with size who has some athleticism and now with a developing post game. It doesn't have to be fancy, just effective and the personnel assembled can be effective.

Give credit for his hardworking ethics. However, I still believe he first needs to do something about his 3P%. He is one of the worst 3P% among all starting SGs in this league, a.k.a. Shooting Guard who can't shoot 3's. I think he's probably even worse than Wade or Turner (or whoever you can name it.) on his 3's.. :cookie:

Derozan's game will look good as long as he is not option no. 1 or even no. 2 like last year. His game will get even better if he develops any chemistry with Kyle Lowry. He is getting the majority of points through fast breaks and when a play is called for him. He is getting trashed alot by the media, but he can only remove this stigma if he takes his defense up another level. Let's hope Ross pushes Derozan's game to the next level.

Heh. If the Raps ever started playing like the Jazz I'd wager you'd be the first one in line for season tix. ;)

I actually disagree. I think Bargnani and DD complement eachother big time. If DD can become the punishing two-guard that he's beginning to show, AB has the offensive skills to afford him more room on the interior and for offensive game to flip the defense inside out. I'm starting to buy into an AB, DD, KL, JV core. I'm worried about our SF spot still, but an oak tree grows slowly.
