DeRozan criticizes use of props in dunk contest

Quote:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan vows he's finished competing in the NBA's slam dunk contest unless the myriad of props that dominated Saturday's event are eliminated.
Asked Tuesday if he thinks he was robbed when he didn't reach the final of the competition, DeRozan replied, "I think so." Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers won by leaping over a car to edge Washington's JaVale McGee in the last round.

"I'm a dunker. Dunk contests, you go out there and dunk. I'm not into all the props and everything," DeRozan said at shootaround before Tuesday's game against Charlotte. "I try to come out with a creative dunk and do it and go from there. My fans liked it and you can see the reaction from a lot of people afterward.
"If there's a dunk contest next year I'll do it. But not no prop dunk contest."
A Los Angeles native and former player at Southern California, DeRozan says he was disappointed in how the contest played out in his hometown after spending extra time practicing and preparing creative dunks. He didn't include props such as the car, a stuffed toy and using an extra basket as other competitors did.
DeRozan feels the extra elements cheapens the contest.
"I think a lot of people probably look at it like that. It seems that way when you watch it," he said. "This year I put thought into it. I practiced, had dunks ready and everything. It is what it is. I did it two years in a row. I'm good."
Asked if he would reconsider, DeRozan said he would only compete again if the All-Star game is held in Toronto or if the rules are changed to eliminate props.
"There's no telling what might happen next year," DeRozan said. "Somebody might use a trampoline."

Blakes dunk was a 4/10 if anything. The car was lame as hell. And the stupid grin on his face afterward was sickening. LIke he did us a favour on doing the dunk.

I just read this... I LOVE it.

I have detested the last couple of years in the dunk contest, and how it's become a novelty act. The whole blowing out the candle on a cupcake thing, superman outfits, etc, etc... it has become a gong show, and more like reality TV as opposed to being about the dunks.

Props to DeMar for speaking out.

Watch this and weep, props boys:

Pretty much agree, through and through.

jeffb 02-22-2011 04:15 PM

Some props are ok imo, but it's gotten rediculous. Choir's, Cars.....a little much!

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 02-22-2011 04:17 PM

Totally agree with him. We need to start a petition to the NBA to ban such props....or at least not reward their use as highly as athleticism.

Sounds like David Stern didn't let him know he had a budget.

the fact is, without props the slam dunk competition would be boring as hell. I think Derozan should have used props too along with his amazing skills

no way
would u call derozans 2 dunks boring? i certainly don't
the thing is, props are ok. its just that too much of it is bad
there should some rules or limit around usage of props
what happen this year was way over the top

weswo 02-22-2011 04:27 PM

Big ups to dd! Lol although I don't believe in 4-5 attempts at a dunk and still getting a 50 as well! That shits got to go too!

babyface 02-22-2011 04:30 PM

boring in the sense that everyone else just sucks without props lol

babyface 02-22-2011 04:33 PM

there's no structure with the judging too. There should be criteria like level of difficulty, creativity, number of attempts, etc

I actually think the opposite. I think the addition of child actors, cars, choirs, flag waving, shoe changes, moms , teddy bears, and dunk coaches make it far more difficult to watch. for all that time wasted we could have seen an extra dunk from everyone. Which is why I tuned in. Not to watch a fucking KIA get the white glove treatment.

Totally agree with what DD is saying here. Propr as garbage, and I hate the pre-dunk shit they do, like the Dwight Howard one where he goes into a telephone booth to put a cape on, or with Kenny talking so much crap and building up hype, just go out there and let your dunk do the rest

completelly disagree, i cant think remember any dunks i've liked that have had props in them

doesnt matter though, even without props it was predetermined that derozan wasnt going to the finals and became obvious the second he got an 8 on a god damn through the leg off the backboard ally oop

people should burn for that

Barracuda 02-22-2011 04:37 PM

Maybe they should have a "fun" dunk competition that allows crazy props and is all about being a spectacle, and then a "real" dunk competition that is about skill and skill alone.

b55bgc 02-22-2011 04:42 PM

I would love to see farthest shot competition. They get 5 tries to nail it.

Second that, especially considering the fact that the ball has been bounced off of the support stanchion behind the backboard, thus making that dunk even more difficult. IMO, if he didn't have to use so many attempts, that one would have been just as impressive as his #2.

Overall, people should re-watch Vince's performance at the dunk contest. That's the golden standard against which all the modern dunkers have to be measured, IMO. Few attempts, power, imagination, highest degree of difficulty and pure showmanship.

It's even more of a farce when you consider that blake griffin got a 48 (?) on a windmill off the side of the backboard, which is essentially a much easier alternative of DeRozan's dunk. I'm not convinced the dunk contest was rigged per se, but there was blatant favoritism going on.
