Demar doesn't pass enough?

Neil Paine of Basketball-Reference.com has a method to ascertain the number of touches a player has during any given game. He used those figures and estimates of the number of passes to a teammate in an attacking position players make to come up with his own "black hole" ratings.
Quote:

Paine's numbers indicate that (Nick) Young passes on 27.4 percent of his touches. The next most Black Hole guard playing at least 30 minutes a game? DeMar DeRozan at 36.1 percent. (Trojans!)

found it kinda interesting...of course it doesnt take into account the talent surround the players....its obviously easier for kobe to pass the ball because his teammates but still, maybe demar should look for his teammates more...

thoughts?

Don Vito 02-15-2011 08:36 PM

This is the dumbest rating I've seen in my life. DeRozan is shooting a high percentage, theres no reason he should feed the ball to struggling players.

Dweez 02-15-2011 08:37 PM

Uhm, DeMar is mainly a scorer so i don't worry too much about it... sure, he can pass the ball more often but this isn't really a problem.

Nice to see Caldy third behind Kidd and Rajon

MISAM38 02-15-2011 08:39 PM

He is shooting high percentages, but at times he can get carried away and take a low percentage shot, that would have been better if he had passed. But yeah i still dont care, hes getting better and hes stepping up, whereas most of the team is left in the dust.

would we rather see the ball in demar's hands or bargnani? im going with demar right now

+1 to that.

I've seen him look for guys to pass to more as the season progressed. What really bugs me though, is that so much about the Raptors offense promotes taking the first shot available. You'll see long stretches of one pass and a shot, with guys doing everything one-one-five sprinkled in there in good doses. There's not a lot of emphasis on options. Last game DeMar made a nice drive to the basket, only to find three defenders in the lane. OK great - so he'd done his job, and he had stayed away from being too aggressive only to get stuffed. But where were the options for him? There was nobody on offense reacting to what he was doing and making themselves available. I really hope that whole situation gets better before the season ends, because DeMar looks to be one of the more willing passers this team has.

i'll agree that he doesn't pass enough but i'd rather he shot than passed the ball, he's only starting to get the scoring part of the game and every time he passes its a turnover, so stick with the shooting for now

LX 02-15-2011 08:52 PM

he'd have a lot less turnovers, and create some easy baskets for people, if there was some awareness of what to do from the other players on the floor.

the second part of that isnt true. im not sure about the numbers but when i watch him he doesnt commit a lot of turnovers when passing. most of them are from weak ball handling which in defence of Demar has improved greatly over the course of his career. look at some highlights of him in the beginning of the 09-10 season and you'll see how raw he is compared to him now. his passing has improved greatly but as said before i dont mind him not passing considering he and bargs are the only one on the team right now being efficiant at offence.

FoldedLaundry 02-15-2011 10:03 PM

Well for the past few games he's had about maybe 2 turnovers which is good. Demar scoring ability has improved and so has his defense from last year. He should continue to improve on those aspects as well as his shooting and rebounding. Sooner or later, the assists will come when he learns how to find the open man when double teamed. Other than that, he's been passing pretty well.

0nekhmer 02-15-2011 11:07 PM

at times like last game at clips he probably should've passed more when he was struggling. especially on the perimeter. however, on the fast break, demar is number 1!

exactly, thats why i brought up the talent around him....we just dont have any offensive threat...two of our main offensive threats (IMO) are horrid without the ball in their hands(barbosa & bargs)...he doesnt have much choice...

that being said, the stat is for passes, just passes, doesnt have to be an assist...so it really shoudnt be that hard to pass the ball around, its not like he can create shots for him....

fk24 02-15-2011 11:28 PM

from what I've seen he doesn't get the ball that much. Theres been times he was on a hot streak and jose and Bargnani wouldn't pass him the ball. He doesn't get the ball a whole lot so i don't know how he can be labelled a blackhole. If anything Andrea doesn't pass enough.

rapsmannn 02-16-2011 04:01 AM

Derozan gets the ball whenever he wants now, sometimes he takes a bad shots, he needs to learn how to create and pass better but this is a guy who is 20 years old, and shows signs of doing that in the future

he also has to learn not to be the hero, hence that ugly 3 point shot

b55bgc 02-16-2011 08:59 AM

I havew to disagree witht his statement.
Once derozan gets the ball he drives and gets the foul or he makes the shot.
I dont think his shot percentage is low enough to give him a hard time for taking bad shots.
Actually very rarely i see the raps take bad shots. Look at Calderon. He manages to get a good look at the rim quite often. Too bad they aint falling like they used to.

creative1mm 02-16-2011 09:09 AM

Demar gets off to quick starts, then the team forgets about him.. so why should he give anyone else the ball.. they don't do anything with it

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 02-16-2011 09:29 AM

When the point guard just stands and pounds the ball into the floor for the first 10 seconds of the shot clock (like Jose has been doing somewhat more lately), it leaves less time to pass!!!
