Raptors Demar Derozan over/under 20ppg

Quote:
5. Over/Under: 20 points per game for DeMar DeRozan next season.

Maurice Brooks, ESPN.com: Over. His points per game average more than doubled last season (8.6 to 17.2) and there is still plenty of room for improvement in his game. The Raptors are one of the youngest teams in the league and are going through growing pains. The offensive-minded DeRozan is a nice piece of the rebuilding puzzle.

Chad Ford, ESPN.com: Push. 20 ppg sounds about right for DeRozan. They will be largely empty points, mind you, but I don't see anyone else coming in and taking up the scoring slack in Toronto.

Brendan Jackson, Celtics Hub: Over ... at least, he better if the Raps hope to win more than 22 games. Aside from Andrea Bargnani, DeRozan is the most offensively gifted player on that roster. The hiring of a defensive coach in Dwayne Casey coupled with the Raptors' better role players being defensive dirt dogs means that someone on that team is going to have to put the ball in the bucket.

John Kenney, KnickerBlogger: Over. DeMar takes the old adage "you have to shoot to score" very seriously. The progression in his ability combined with an increased number of shots should put him over the 20 ppg threshold easily.

Devin Kharpertian, Nets Are Scorching: Over. DeRozan's shooting percentage from 10-15 feet leapt from 31 percent in his rookie season to a much more palatable 46 percent last season, and he should continue to improve. It won't translate into wins, but the Raptors should get a majority of their first-string points from Andrea Bargnani and a developing DeRozan.

hmm. is Kleiza healthy. is Barbosa healthy. does Ed Davis take a big step.

Demar scored 17 but he was not an efficient scorer. i could easily see him going down to 15 ppg but improving his efficiency.
but that's in case the other options are there.

He goes to the rim and shoots 47% from the field. For a second year SG who faces the best SG's in the NBA every night i'd say that's rather efficient. Plus, you compare him to mot 1-2nd options but how many of them are 22yrs old?

look im sorry but im a Valanciunas fanboy not a DeRozan fanboy, so i dont feel a need to mention he's 22 in every post.
i wrote that he'd improve his efficiency with more healthy vets to take the pressure off.
if you disagree, why.
if not, im not really interested in comparing him to 22 year olds. the topic is scoring in the NBA, not in a 22 year old league.

If a player averages almost 40 minutes and gets spoon-fed the ball on a team that wins ~22 games during the season then sure, Demar can average over 20 pts. I do, however, expect the Raptors to improve and play more of a team game. I also bet that Demar will be defended differently as he's emerging as a possibly bigger offensive threat than Bargnani. I expect more double teams on Demar which will result in him passing more and less trips to the free-throw line, a huge reason for his scoring last year. Therefore I voted under and there's nothing wrong with that. Averaging 20 pts on a decent team is an accomplishment and shouldn't be under-rated.

I will wait for the NBA season to start before gauging his 3 point shooting... let's not forget that he shot 9%. Even if he improved I doubt it will have much effect on his overall scoring.

gotta work on that 3 ball, but I think he'll just sneak over the 20ppg mark.

I hope his focus is on defense, but I doubt it. Chad Ford seems about right on this.....

If his focus isn't on defense under Casey then something's wrong. That doesn't mean he can't score over 20 as well.

As much as I love to be a homer I can't see Derozan averaging that high.

It doesn't really require being that much of a homer. He scored around 19 after December, and averaged 19.9 post AS game. If he improves his range at all, it would be hard to see how he doesn't get over 20. It's not like scoring is going to come from a whole lot of other places.

Maturity is going to be a big issue with him next season I think also though, if you watched last year he was easily turned off when things didn't go his way. And with Casey its only going to be more mentally straining on him. I think that will be the biggest thing, if you watch any clips from this summer you can see his range has improved and his handle (though slightly).

The only thing that may stop him is if we spend some of our capspace on a scorer (ie: SF or PG if jose is dealt), If Bayless is our starter he'll take more shots than Jose does therefor taking away some shots away from Demar. If Demar has one more scorer in the starting lineup other than Bargnani it may be the difference between 17-18ppg or 20-21ppg.

An added focus on defense as a team may also contribute, if our offence slows down in an attempt to keep games closer.....

At the same time, more defensive stops equals more transition offense, where Demar can be really dangerous.
