Default DeMar DeRozan having one of the 20 worst 3 point shooting seasons ever

Basketball Prospectus | The Clipboard: Why Can't DeRozan Make Threes?

Quote:
College stats don't always project smoothly to the NBA, but DeMar DeRozan's three-point shooting has held up.

Unfortunately.

DeRozan, who made just 6-of-36 three-pointers (16.7 percent) in his lone season at USC, has been quietly putting together one of the worst three-point shooting seasons in NBA history. With six games remaining, DeRozan has made just 4-of-41 three-pointers (9.8 percent). Just 10 players have posted worse three-point-shooting seasons (minimum: 30 three-point attempts).

Thank goodness for his midrange game.

Alot of those shots were shots he had to take because the shot clock was running down. If he gets passed the ball with 2 seconds on the shot clock and hes behind the arc, there is not much else he can do besides shoot it.. and alot of the time its contested and is a bad shot. This kind of reminds me of Vince Carter... he could never make a three in his early days, then he worked on it and its all he did.

WTF is he doing anywhere near the 3pt line with 2sec left on the shot clock? Maybe he would have got the ball sooner if he was within his range.

Seriously though, I think I've brought up DD's 3 point shooting in just about every other thread made about him this season. He needs serious work.

A SG that can't make contested, or tough, shots worries me.

Move DeMar over to SF and bring in OJ Mayo.

This is an interesting point. During his rookie season, Carter was not a good 3 point shooter. He improved quite a bit during his sophomore season (age of 23). And Carter played 3 seasons of college, too. Demar would still be a Junior in college THIS season. So, if Derozan works on his range this summer (and continues to keep working after that), I think he can improve. Having said that, young VC had better mechanics, so I wouldn't expect Demar to ever hit the 40% mark from downtown the way Carter did.

I think it's important to remember that Derozan was a 9th pick. In that context, I'm okay with his progress so far. If he had been further along in his development last year, the Raps probably never would have landed him. A team would have taken him in the top 5. He's one of those guys who you hope ends up being a huge steal through his hard work and use of what talents he does have. If he can get his 3FG% up to 35%+, he is going to be really tough to guard and a great selection at the 9th spot.

it is pretty crazy that he has a solid mid-range game, even near the point line.. but for whatever reason he just can't make 3's

he needs to add that to his arsenal to be able to stretch the D, it would help him on offence substantially.

most of the great SGs and SFs aren't that good of 3 pt shooters. (MJ, Kobe, etc) but they can at least make some when their wide open or sometimes in clutch situations..

Demar is already a great offensive player as it is. But if he can develop a good 3 point shot he would incredibly hard to stop. Remember Demar didn't have a very good mid range shot last year; he could knock it down but not consistently. He has slowly built up his range and I expect it to be behind the three point line fairly soon. If he does get a solid 3 point shot hopefully he doesn't become to reliant on it like his buddy Chucky Weems.

how fitting is it that a couple of minutes after this post Kobe Bryant hits a well defended 3 point shot to tie the game with 30 secs left lol.

If he can get up to 28-30% from three, that's about as good as you can hope for. He will never be a good three point shooter. But if you look at Melo, he's a wing who's not a good three point shooter either, but still finds a way to be effective. I think Melo should be the one he tries to emulate offensively.

melo is more of a SF/PF type, not an SG/SF type, he isn't really a wing player, there's a difference there

Who cares? He's only attempted 41. That's 1 three for every two games. At least he's disciplined and realistic about this shortcoming.

I am not worry about his 3 pt shot..
I don't even think he works on it.. I am pretty sure in the summer he will put in some time to develop a decent three point shot. If Derrick Rose can I am pretty sure DD can as well

you guys press the panic button a little bit to fast, he has already made great progress from a season ago

He hasn't taken that many 3 point shots. I think most of them come from end of quarter heaves.

^Yeah exactly. He's still managing without a 3 point shot pretty well, with his work ethic it should come in due time

DeRozan is the man!!! Anyone notice that when AB starts, DeRozan's Defense is mediocre & when AB isn't playing he plays very good D?

I also noticed that when AB sits radiation levels drop in Japan.

The biggest reason why he has to improve his 3 point shooting is that it will make him a more dangerous with his mid-range and in-the-paint game. For a guy with weak(er) handles, he needs to force players to close hard so that he can pump-fake and/or blow by them more easily.

I agree with the earlier poster that it is a bit mysterious that he is a pretty good shooter from 20' but terrible once he gets behind the line.
