Wink Deja Raptor?

In watching bits of the last few preseaon games, I was struck by certain similarities in current Raptors with a few members from of the 2000-2001 season. Is it a sign? Does it mean anything? Are we ready to replicate or exceed our franchise's previous best season? If you answered no, no and no - you're absolutely correct. This is just for fun and means absolutley nothing, so bear with me.

Jarrett Jack/Chris Childs

Similarities:

Wore number 1
6'3 and around 200lbs.
Turnover prone
Lack consistency from outside
Can play either guard position
Tough as nails, good defenders and vocal leaders

Differences:

Childs was a bit of a loose cannon.
Jack knows how to count - especially where timeouts are concerned

Amir Johnson/Keon Clark

Similarities:

Long, athletic and active around the basket
Good shot blockers
Came via trade from other teams looking for an opportunity to prove themselves
Looked upon to provide energy off of the bench
Mediocre free throw shooters

Differences:

Keon had a decent face-the-basket game
Amir is not in jail
Amir does not drink alcohol at half time
Amir does not smoke cigarettes while doing postgame interviews

Rahso Nesterovic/Eric Montross

Similarities:

7'0 veteran centres
Mediocre free throw shooters
Slow
Solid man defenders capable of banging down low
Consumate professionals always ready to go when their number is called

Differences:

Rasho's kids do not leave their toys lying around on the floor.
Rasho refuses to shave his head to hide his thinning hair.

Reggie Evans/Charles Oakley

Similarities:

Veteran known for being as tough as nails
Great rebounders
Physical defenders
Energetic and willing to sacrafice their body
Prone to the occasional ball handling brain fart
Nonexistent low post game
Does not rely on athleticism

Differences:

Oak had a jumper
Reggie has never bitched slapped a player named Hill or McInnis at shoot around
Oak never grabbed a guy buy his huevos

Yogi Stewart/Patrick O'Bryant

Similarities:

Known for shot-blocking
Earned multi-year contract despite ever really doing anything on the court to warrant it
Look good in a suit at the end of the bench
Started their careers playing for California based NBA teams and eventually played for the Raptors and Celtics

Differences:

Despite his lack of game, people actually liked Yogi for his heart, hustle and warm personality
Yogi never looked like he was about to slip into a coma out on the court

At least no one on our team is no longer drawing out Hoffa comparisons.

well, these comparisons are supposed to be for the 2000-2001 team, which hoffa was not on

and it'd be pretty hard to find any guy on almost any team to compare with hoffa, that guy was on his own level

Nice thinking.

I'd take POB over Yogi any day of the week.

What's really interesting is the fact that you've left all the main contributors out of the picture. Alvin, VC, AD have no similarities to Bosh, Hedo, Bargnani or Calderon. Thus, the whole mindset and makeup of the current roster is quite different from the best team we've had over these 15 years. Still, doesn't mean the results won't be the same or better...

You're absolutely 100% on the money Mike. There's really no comparison between the main guys from then and now.

I thought of maybe comparing Mo Pete/DeMar, seeing as they are the respective rookies or even Tracy Murray/Belinelli, but both instances would've really been stretching it to work.

Some stretches in there, but fun to think about for sure. I like this team better, but that team was very deep with solid veterans. The downside to that was that the team got old by what - the following season?

Lenny Wilkens/Jay Triano

Differences:

Jay does not resemble a koala (how many times did you hear him being called that back in the day at ESPN)
Jay does not wear depends on the sidelines
Jay does not Carter to call iso's for on every offensive possession
