I'm not a fan of the Smitch hate. I love him.

But even I have to admit that he makes some dumbass decisions. And this is coming from someone who doesn't know even a fraction of what you guys know about the game.

Maybe they should have him to commentary instead

Put him on a mike and he is awesome, put him in the DLeague and he would be unbeleivable, but in the NBA he is FAR outclassed.

I've always said that Sam could prob be a very good assistant coach.... but I think that he just took the next step up a bit too early.

That's brilliant. Thanks. I'll go seek help. I won't mention what the Sam haters are suffering from. This whole thread makes out like the team is off the rails. IS it really? I mean couldn't you at least wait until all the garbage you're spewing has a hint of truth to it?

Oh - and if someone could please free me from Sam's basement, it would be great. I'm getting sick of eating the yellow cake all the time.

What kind of threshold needs to be crossed exactly? What would reveal the proper time to take that step?

Ha!

I guess, as a Sam lover, I'm in there too.

But I don't mind. I'm a willing kidnapee.

Sam is still young coach, not a tactician, but a great motivator. and he is good coach for young players. right?
but has he improved over the years? sure. now he knows when to call the timeout and he has the proper substitution pattern. (have i missed something?)
motivator? do you remember great comebacks? playing team best ball against top clubs? Sam even cannot motivate Moon to drive ...
good to youngsters? I believe, Mitchell has more to Bargs' last year regress than to this year confidence

Sam is a good coach, I don't hear any of the players complaining about him. The team always competes.

If by "the team always competes" you mean "the team is always on the floor until the game is over" then I agree with you.

We've had more than a few piss-poor performances over the seasons.

Hard to say exactly. How long was Sam an assistant for? I don't think it was more than 2-3 years.

Sometimes you think that someone's ready for a promotion only to find that when it's given to them they're in over their head.

Your perspectives don't match up with reality.
Yes they do. I didn't feel comfortable at all with the way they were playing and thought a loss was pretty likely. Its not about being up by 17, its HOW you get up 17. Especially keeping in mind Boston was coming back from 20pt half time deficits vs teams in the playoffs.

So you're actually suggesting we were playing poorly or even mediocre in the first three quarters of the Boston game. If thats the case, your opinion on this subject is moot as far as im concerned.

Boston was playing like total shit. Toronto was hitting everything. Toronto wasn't breaking down Boston's defense. Boston's defense hadn't really shown up and we STILL weren't getting easy baskets. Boston on the other hand was being totally apathetic on offense. Both of those situations were unlikely to continue and with Toronto's history of blowing leads, combined with Boston's ability to come back from worse deficits against far superior teams (LAL), a collapse was possible.

Then it happened. Boston turned up the defensive intensity and Toronto stopped hitting even more difficult shots (forget penetration). Sam Mitchell didn't come up with anything to pick apart what Boston was doing. He benched CB4 because they are both scared of KG, and then just hoped Jose would come up with something pretty. We were completely exposed on the wings, because Mitchell had Kapono playing 1vs1 on Pierce which is ridiculous. He needed help and wasn't getting any. None of this was hard to see coming if you've watched the Raptors (and Celtics) play.

Its unfortunate you think my opinion was worthless on the subject just because I didn't blow my load on a flimsy lead.

EDIT: And yes to answer your original question I didn't think they were playing all that well the 1st 3 quarters, on a sustainable level.

Maybe Sam should start running a full-court offense I guess.

our team isn't fast paced like that. Our players would tire out easily especially JO. Bosh is usually tired in the he second game of a back-to-back. So I don't see the Raps runing a full-court offense any time soon

Thank you Gurk! BJJS was being sarcastic, but you get something at least. You can add Jose to the equation as well, and Bargnani. These players are in fact being used well.

bottom line is that this team is in no way overachieving. Best case scenario in Sam's defense right now is that we're not necessarily under-achieving (even though many feel we do). We need a coach that's capable of making us over-achieve -it's the only way to get to the top, in a league with so many great teams.
