DCI - Devlin Checks In

Just doesn't have the same ring to it. :face4:

Anyhow, I guess its official now and the Raptors have given Matt his own blog ala Chuck's CCI for the last couple seasons.

Let’s start with you. Throughout the course of the year I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you and interacting through this blog (the name is not decided on yet…let us know if you have any thoughts on a name!)… I’ll cover a wide range of topics, most specifically your Raptors and the NBA.

I want take a moment to thank MLSE and the Raptors for an opportunity that I consider to be one of the very best in the NBA. This a great job, with a great organization that is committed to winning, with a great fan base and, it’s a Great City.

I did Game 4 of the Raps v. Magic for TNT and despite the TTC strike, the fans where out in force! Bosh had 39 (let’s not talk about how it ended)… Toronto has always been one of my favourite places to come to in the league. This is a dream job.

My wife, Erin and our three young sons Jack (8), Ian (6) and Luke (4) can’t wait to get here. What makes this even more special is that both my wife and I have family here in Toronto and Peterborough.

Erin and I just spent a week in T.O. house hunting…we were told there are over 240 neighborhoods… By the end of the week it felt like we had seen at least half of them!

The move is going to the toughest part because I leave for Beijing in early August to cover Wrestling for NBC Sports. I don’t know how we are going to pull it off: selling a house, buying a house and getting our boys off to school in such a short period of time with me half way around the world!

Needless to say, without my wife, Erin, it wouldn’t be imaginable or possible. We wrapped up the week with a dinner that seemed like a mini-family reunion, my brother and his girlfriend joined us… They drove to Toronto from a wedding in The Sault (my brother’s girlfriend who is from Burlington has family there) and then we had my family from Toronto there.

We arrived back in the States with Canadian flags for the boys along with Raptors and Leafs t-shirts. And we’re busy teaching the boys “O Canada”, which they’ve taken to quickly! We’re going to bring them up to Toronto for the first time next week as we continue our house hunt. I’ve been telling them about Timbits and Pizza Pizza…Our meals are planned.

One of the other reasons why I think so much of this job is Jack and Leo.

Jack and I go back, we’ve done WNBA games as well as college games together, and I always loved working with him. He knows the game, has a great personality and we’ve always had fun. Besides, we have this Hubie Brown connection (which means great stories), Jack from his coaching days and I was with Hubie in Memphis.

Leo has always been an analyst that I’ve spent time talking to before regular season and post-season games about the team and the league. I look forward to working with him and I wish him all the best with coaching Team Canada.

Style… People will always ask play-by-play announcers about your style... I try to be straightforward and fair… It’s about the game, the teams, the players, the coaches, Jack and Leo.

Do I want the Raps to win? Yes! Are there times were I may be critical? Yes. Do I get excited, if something big happens? Definitely.

Chuck and I talked yesterday and I told him he left “Shaq-Sized Shoes to fill and I only have a size 11.” I know and understand that Chuck had a special bond with all of you and that he did so much for the Raptors and the game here. I can only hope through time (and plenty of Raptors W’s!) that I can earn that kind of acceptance and respect.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me, mdevlin@raptors.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Well at least he's got the chemistry with Jack which may help a lot.

And I laughed at this part:

You think??? :haha:

He seems like a pretty nice guy and all. I just hope he can be a little more enthusiastic is all I ask more. And they're right, he's got huge Shaq-sized shoes to fill.

'trane 07-09-2008 12:44 PM

he's got tiny, irritating, pea-sized shoes to fill. he could go out there and belch continuously for two and a half hours and I'd find him 10 times more entertaining than corny catch-phrase chuck.

Adequate Swag 07-09-2008 12:59 PM

Seems like a quality guy.

Love the fact that he's trying to Canadianize the kids already.

It seems like you guys have been a little harsh on him, no? I mean, NBC and TNT are huge networks...they don't hire too many scrubs, especially for events as big as the playoffs or the Olympics.

"It's about the game" is really the main thing I wanted to hear from him, and he said exactly that. And you can't complain about chemistry with Jack.

Ths made me spit out my water. Well done sir, well done.

And I agree with SWAG, he seems like a nice guys, has a nice resume and genuinely seems to be excited at being here.

I'd pay money to hear that. Now THAT'S entertainment!

HAHAHA.

personally, i just want Matt to be himself and do what comes naturally. Hopefully MLSE haven't been coaching him into taking on an uber lame personality.

Major 07-09-2008 01:09 PM

I seriously don't understand what some of you guys have in Chuck. I really liked him. And i'm gonna miss him a lot.

He was a homer to the point of near unprofessionalism.

He was canned enthusiasm. (Think the NBA's Dick Vitale)

He thought we were all very interested in his dinner plans, or other totally irrelevant personal information.

He wasn't particularly basketball savvy.

Catchphrases in general usually suck. Chuck's catchphrases were painful.

That's just me though. I totally understand why people like him. Hell, I've never heard a negative thing about him as a person. I'd just rather not listen to him call an NBA game.

Chuck... Who? :confused2:

XiaominWu 07-09-2008 01:44 PM

I miss Chuck already.

Sounds like Matt is going to be almost as interesting as John Saunders was.... which is to say not at all. I'd be thinking about using the mute button, but then I'd miss Jack! Fuck.

Gurk 07-09-2008 01:52 PM

whatever we'll have to wait and see how this guy turns up at the start of the season

LX 07-09-2008 04:09 PM

He seemed ok on his short appearance on RapsTV after the press conf. today. I could do with a good dose of vanilla, and I love that he is connected with Jack. I was worried that Leo was the connection.

Major 07-09-2008 04:36 PM

For some who missed him during the press, here's a recap:

- One of the best situations in the NBA
- Chuck was integral part of org for 10 years, has been a good friend over the years
- With today's pressers, knowing that Bosh, O'Neal and Calderon, along with all the others, very exciting
- Happened very quick
- Was told at a dinner that Chuck left
- Got in touch with Toronto immediately
- Had great conversations with the team
- Organization committed to winning
- Unbelievable market in a beautiful city
- Lots of family up here
- Wanted to be back with a team after being released by Charlotte last year after their own regional network closed down
- Wanted to come back to the best situation possible, and he feels Toronto is it
- When you talk to people around the NBA, people speak extremely highly of the organization

jeffb 07-09-2008 04:41 PM

This guy looks like a stiff! I already miss the Swirsk??:frustrated:

Superjudge 07-09-2008 04:49 PM

I cannot believe the time and effort you guys are putting into this.

Who gives a flying fuck who calls the games.

'trane 07-09-2008 04:52 PM

i give a flying fuck. chuck made the games unbearable unless the volume was turned off. if you're going to listen to a guy for 2 and a half hours three nights a week, 8 months per year, you'd better not think he's a total douche.

I can almost guaranty that i won't like this guy half as much as Swirsky.I heard one of his broadcasts and he's as dull as watching paint dry.

Superjudge 07-09-2008 05:24 PM

I didn't mind Swirsk.

If the new guy has any Ball knowledge at all, I won't mind him either.

I know enough myself that I don't really listen anyhow.

Thug 07-09-2008 05:24 PM

Chuck Swirsky = GOAT
