if the eye surgery works and gay becomes a consistent 3 pt shooter once more, and the nerve surgery works and landry goes back to doing everything WHILE being a great shooter, and DD comes in next season improved as he has every season to date, and lowry comes back as houston lowry, and JV has a medium-breakout year we CAN compete for a championship, in the future, with the right moves and right use of the MLE, something I have faith in Ujiri.

No, we can't win a championship with this as our core, even if those things happen. You have DTFS. Delusional Toronto Fan Disorder. It's affected 95% of our fan base yearly with promises from ownership that the roster will do whatever they say. Our core sucks compared to the top half of the league. We'd be lucky to sneak into the playoffs with our current team.

All of your posts seem to be about hypotheticals that will never happen, or insulting somebody or something in an off topic thread.

This right here is the single best argument I could possibly have put together to support the tank.

except that he's also assuming that all of the other aligned stars are going to stay aligned as well.... what if Amir Johnson's year was his career year? What if Alan Anderson falls back a bit? What if Aaron Gray, God bless his beautiful soul, doesn't get as many double-doubles this season? This team may need more stars to align than just the ones pzabby mentioned.

Why don't we just wait and see what the actual roster and what Ujiri does before we start talking about stars aligning.

Will need some other pieces but overall I'm not as hard on the core as some are. Really, I'm not sure about stars aligning but asking for:
a) Gay being able to see the basket restoring his shot from distance? After surgery and his past display, I can't say he couldn't.
b) DD improved? Most likely he'll have increased his shooting %'s and judging from last season's end - most likely will happen
c) Lowry being healthy - crossed fingers but no more excuses this year - contract year.
d) JV basically continuing his development.

I'm fairly confident that those 4 things will happen - not a lot to ask for really. I have espoused similar in other threads. Is this core strong enough to compete for a title if those 4 are met, probably not but you know that. Now comes the x-factor - the right moves going forward. That statement is so vague; what does that mean?

I'd say the right moves would mean trading one or more of the current core pieces based on assessments this upcoming season, maybe getting draft picks wherever possible, and over the next couple of years getting players that fit a particular identity while the young players continue to develop. I think it's most essential to have a verifiable core in place by the time JV is pretty much fully developed two or three years down the line. I think that can be done by getting picks outside of looking for the big score by tanking, and targeting particular players. The new scouting staff are going to have to earn their pay. Meanwhile the team can still go forward honing a proper identity and taking steps toward higher and higher seedings.

So in other words, moves should be done with an eye to winning down the line rather than looking for immediate improvements that will only get the team to a certain ceiling level.

The current core isn't good enough to go all the way unless KL, DD and Gay become all stars/near all stars and TR becomes a supersub while at the same time JV becomes the next hall of fame C. So, it isn't happening.

I highly doubt casey would be involved in the top level decision whether to tank or not to tank. Given that he's in a contract year, it's not hard to guess what his decision would be really
