Default Davis switching up his personality

Quote:
Ed Davis displayed a new side of his game while Terrence Ross showed he could play at the NBA level — the two were bright spots of the Toronto Raptors' intrasquad game Saturday.

Davis scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead his white team 67-62 over the black squad, on an afternoon that was as much about giving back to basketball fans in the city as a proper game.

DeMar DeRozan led all scorers with 22 points, while Andrea Bargnani had 11 and Landry Fields scored 10.

Davis knocked down shots with confidence at the Halifax Metro Centre, capping what's been a strong five-day training camp for the third-year forward.

"It comes from coach," Davis said on his newfound confidence. "Just being around coach a lot this summer and him telling me he wants me to be a lot more aggressive. He needs me to score when I get the ball."

Davis said it's not a stretch for him to play with more aggression.

"I have been switching my personality up a little lately. It's starting to change my game a little," Davis said. "I have always been an outgoing person. This is more on the court. Just being more assertive and more aggressive when I'm out there."

Last year I wanted to gleefully count Ed Davis double-doubles but he let me down. Maybe this year the double-double train will start rolling.

Good on ya Ed.

He'll play less minutes so that's doubtful.

He wont play less minutes if hes playing well. If hes able to rebound consistently, and now be able to score the ball like everyone has said hes been able to, then he'll play 24+ mpg and Amirs time will be cut.

Not if he shows something early like he is.

One of the two games I went to last season was against GS. I had great seats given to me. Ed Davis won that game. Without him on that court they lose pretty miserably. He got the Raptors all kinds of second chances, disrupted the Warrior offense, was the first to loose balls, and made nice quick outlet passes. And this wasn't the only game where he had a big impact, though he did start out pretty slow and out of shape. If he can make good use of this full camp, show that he fits well with what Casey wants to do on offense, and continue to exhibit his excellent defensive extincts while playing with a bit more consistent energy and discipline, he could have something of a breakout year. And i pretty much expect that.

I could see this guy being the best fit of all the power forwards in the long run, if they want to play up and down, and can get a top notch small forward. People who think he's as good as gone need to wait a moment, take a deep breath, watch him some more, and re-assess.

I can't see him getting the minutes he got last season unless Bargs completely sucks or gets injured again. Especially with Valanciunas now in the mix. I guess a lot also depends on Amir.

If he produces he plays. Period. Valanciunas will likely start with not so many minutes. The combination of him starting out of shape, and Casey not being able to scheme the offense properly, left him in the shadows last year. Those factors are gone.

Even if he gets limited minutes due to a logjam, if he produces enough then it will be someone else that gets moved to free him up. He's not going to bring much back in any trade due to his contract anyway. If another team targets him and offers a lot in a package deal then that's one thing, but otherwise this guy has a big opportunity to be a core piece while someone else gets moved. And it is his opportunity to take and make the most of. He isn't just going to be denied any chance to do that. It's not the way Casey works.

I'm not sure i see a whole lot of logic is claiming Ed Davis should be starting at PF on this team, but hey, thats me, I'm just an illogical kinda guy.

No one is claiming Davis should start at PF. But if he finally breaks through on offence and can maintain his rebounding while still playing good defence, a combination of Bargs/Val starting, and Davis getting most of, if not all of the minutes as the 1st big off the bench would be great. Sort of like what LA was doing with Gasol/Bynum, and Odom getting 30 mpg off the bench a few years ago.

I love Amir, but hes not going to get much better than he is now. I've said many times before he's a very nice bigman off the bench on a winning team, but Ed could be a near double double guy off of the bench if he reaches his potential.

Yes. He either earns minutes, traded in a package, or cut outright.

the reason ed won't get as many minutes this year is mainly because we expect Bargs to be healthy this year eating up the majority of 1 of the bigs minutes
also, ed got a lot of minutes last year because amir had a bad season and was unreliable last year, you have to expect a bounce back year from him
I'm not even considering the fact that JV is here now because i expect that he'll get his minutes from a decreased role from gray and magloire
and all this is not even factoring the possibilities of using dominic mcguire or acy or the minutes when kleiza gets pushed to PF
only way he gets the minutes is if amir gets traded

If all works out, gray and mags won't get minutes. It will be Bargs and Jonas. Lets say 35 min for bargs, playing 8 of those at C. 25 min for Jonas, and around 20 each for Amir and Davis. Amir has shown he can get double doubles in the matter of 20 min. If davis and him can somehow learn to do that consistently, we would have a great front court with the depth

There's no way he starts today, but considering this is going to be his first full season, there's no reason not to be able to see him starting in the future. Bargnani will still need to prove that he is the right fit, and he might be the guy that brings back the best value in a trade. We haven't seen Casey's offence yet, we haven't seen how Valančiūnas impacts games yet, we haven't seen how Lowry impacts games yet, we have yet to see anything but a somewhat incomplete frontcourt or lineup in general. So he could start someday, or be extremely valuable off the bench. There's a lot that needs to become more clear over the course of this season. That's not a bad thing. I look forward to seeing how it all shakes out one way or another.

You win with talent though LX. The thing missing from this franchise for a decade has been talent. Bargnani is potentially the most naturally gifted scored this team has...so he never sits. I don't mind agreeing that Ed is the full time back up over Amir if he has in fact really turned it around, but I cannot see him taking minutes away from Bargnani. On a decent team, Bargnani will be a terror for other teams.

I don't disagree. I'm saying that depending on how things wash out this season, that Bargnani could be traded for talent that fits better. If Bargnani is a good fit and they can acquire talent through a different trade, then yeah, Ed comes off the bench. I'm just trying to look down the road a little bit, because there will be some settling out this season, there will almost certainly still be a need for an injection of talent, and there are some big decisions to be made with a bunch of different players. The main thing is to see something of a completed puzzle by the end of this season, with a pretty clear path forward and a well-defined core settled upon.

true, but to be honest, this is always the case isn't it?

nyhow, so long as the guy is getting better Im happy at this point. I'm not tied to any one player either, if a guy can be traded for way better guys... i'm all in.
