Default Davis carving out his niche

From Koreen:

Quote:
So. what to make of Davis, the 13th pick in last summer’s NBA draft?

“I love the fact that he’s got a good knack for the ball, where to find it, how to go get it off the glass,” Raptors coach Jay Triano said. “He’s obviously got to keep working on his jumpshot. If you don’t have a jumpshot, teams won’t guard you. If they don’t guard you, your whole offence stalls.”
Quote:
Davis, however, has shown an ability to block shots at the NBA level, and for an asset with such uncertain value as the 13th pick, that counts for plenty.

Davis is blocking two shots per 36 minutes, and has swatted 10 shots over his last four games, despite averaging just more than 20 minutes.

This is no great feat, given the Raptors’ history of defensive ineptitude, but Davis is certainly the Raptors’ best defensive big man prospect since Triano came to Toronto in 2002.

“He’s got great instincts,” Triano said. “His arms are a lot longer than you think. The one thing about him is when you look at him walking around, he’s got that loafy look. But he finds a way to get to where he needs to go.”

“I always thought that rebounding and blocking shots and running the floor would be stuff that always translates, from high school to college and from college to the pros,” Davis said. “It’s not a big surprise.”

Alas, the news is not all so good.

As Triano alluded to, Davis’s offensive game remains limited to put-backs and baskets in transition.

“The biggest thing for young players is you’ve got to be able to play 82 games,” Triano said. “I think that’s hard. You come off of a game where you do something very well, and you don’t prepare the same way or approach the game the same way. That’s when you lay an egg. That’s the thing he’s going to have to grow past over the next 20 (games).”

“People always say, ‘You’ve got to find something in this league to get you going in every game because you’re going to be playing so many games that you won’t be practising that much,’ ” Davis added.

Ed Davis will become a solid pro player. It depends will he put in the work to bulk up properly and improve his game every year, or just settle and blend in. His upside is Antonio Mcdyess from the Pistons (Starting Caliber Power Forward on a contending team). His downside, he'll be journeyman NBA forward like Hilton Armstrong.

ED will be fine. I love having a player who comes in with defensive acumen. Almost funny we're trying to teach him to hit jumpshots. That would be great, but I'm more interested in his presence on the paint defensively.

yeah it's definitely refreshing to have a lsolid young player with potential who doesn't have the stereotypical raptor skillset (or lack thereof). maybe it's symbolic of a change in basketball culture. one can hope.

I really like him a lot. He'll eventually be a solid double double player that can probably average 2blks.

Big fan of Ed's and I'm hoping he takes over for Amir in the starting lineup soon, he has a much higher ceiling than Amir and he needs to be tossed in the fire and gain experience during this rebuilding season.

Colangelo has made several sub par moves along the way but he has done a decent job in drafting lately with Demar, Davis and Bargnani is turning out to be a pretty solid pick as well. We currently sit in the top five youngest teams in the league and the good part is we are drafting good talent to build around with two more first rounders comin up as well as the TPE, expiring contracts and cap space. The future is looking alot better than it was a year ago.

J Roc good to see you, you have finally escaped from the North Korean regime at realgm. Gotta laugh at them wondering why their board is getting less attention these days when all they do is ban good posters, publicly slander them and run their forums like a communist state.

Much better here, stick around

Yeah I caught that. They're wondering why there's less discussion these days on that forum. For one thing, I was one of the most active posters. Now they banned me. As far as I can tell, they banned me for harping that they should have created a sticky thread to vote our Raps into the all star game. A simple thread with the link to the voting site on NBA.com. That way every day when fans tune into the forum, our Raps would get a vote and the online power of Raps Nation would be felt by the NBA.

Anyways, that was considered backseat moderating because I was telling the mods what to do.

Good forum for information but it's seriosuly an awful forum to post anything in it would seem. They lock every second thread, they ban people left right and center...that place is nuts.

Funny thing is they posted raptorsforum.com in the thread as another online forum. So probably a few observers will come out today.

Welcome to all our new members, please make yourselves at home.

Our board may not be for everyone, but we kind of like it the way it is.

We also don't care about how popular we are in the world of basketball forums and we don't take ourselves too seriously. We're here to talk ball, some other stuff and have a little fun along the way.

So far this board has more of a bar discussion feel to it. No moderator letting everyone know what the "correct" opinion is. Just say what you feel, and someone might disagree with your opinion, but they don't call you out as a poster.

Maybe it's still too soon, and I haven't felt the wrath yet.

Btw, the setup of the forum is much better too. Who owns this site and how do they have time to keep things up to date?

We try and make sure everyone respects each other - things do get heated from time to time, but calmer heads always prevail.

The two guys who own the site aren't around much anymore, but we have a hardworking staff that works tirelessly to keep things going and up to date.
