Dave Feschuk:Colangelo is no elite executive!

Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star says BC is losing his Golden Boy satus. He states Bargnani,Mitchell and him seeing the game differently,Saying Garbo missing the season was a big reason we had a .500 team."Maybe the O'neil trade bridges the gap a little and Maybe the incesent complaints from Mitchell about a roster lacking defence/rebounding can be silenced".

"He's the same as a vast majority of jockdom executives, plugging holes, fixing mistakes and whose recent bets haven't panned out".

http://www.thestar.com/Sports/NBA/article/450196

Pretty strong words pointed in Colangelo's direction.Basically calling him overrated. What do you think?

I think he should go fuck himself

Maybe he'd have preferred it if we traded Ford and our pick for Diaw or Maggette? Those would've been disgustingly bad deals.

I'm still a fan of this O'Neal thing

I think calling him overrated and just another GM is way off. This guy has been rediculously off base the last few days. And i don't read this guy at all so i don't know his track record but from what i'v read i won't be reading his columns.

usually sport writers don't like to take strong sides against the powers that be. Even if he was right, he wouldn't take this position. So I'm assuming that he's really pissed for some hidden reason. Either way, he's compromising himself in a big way.

No he isn't.

And this crew of Jackals on here say the EXACT SAME THING Feschuk just did on a daily basis on here.

He didn't say he sucked, he basically looked at the results, the facts, and made an assesment based upon the predicted place Toronto would be based upon what Colangelo himself guarenteed.

Big whoop.

I like Colangelo, and don't agree wih Feschuk entirely, but its a valid argument, and not at ALL unique, LOTS of people thnk that about BC!

I am sure if, whatever the fuck this guy's name is, can come here and be a better GM than BC and I am so sure he will make the Raptors and Championship team. Aren't I right? (Me rolling my eyes.)

I'm pretty sure he is. For one, what Colangelo did here was not "common GM stuff" by any stretch. When he got here, we had like 1 player, 2 or 3 assets of moderate value (cv, jose, mo pete) and everybody else was a stiff. We had about 12 millions or so in cap space.

Just to recap (and I know I'm preaching to the choir), here's what we had beyond those 4 players:

Araujo - not in the league anymore
Sow - not in the league anymore
Woods - not in the league anymore
Aaron Williams - not a rotation player anymore
Eric Williams - not in the league anymore
Antonio Davis - not in the league anymore
Mike James - not a rotation player anymore
Joey Graham - not a rotation player anymore
Matt Bonner - not a rotation player anymore
Andrew Barett - not in the league anymore

So you have 11 stiffs, 1 good asset (CV), 2 mediocre assets (MoPete, Jose) and an all-star on the verge of bolting town. You have 12 millions in cap-space. You got lucky in the draft and got the number 1 pick, but the draft is very weak. During the next 2 years you only get one more first rounder (non-lottery) and a couple of second rounders. To top it off, you play in the worst NBA market, where most players don't want to come. You are also a laughinstock after missing the playoffs for 5 years in a row and the Vince Carter debacle.

If you tell me that most GMs in this league turn this nighmare into a team that averages 44 wins the next 2 seasons, making the playoffs two years in a row, and to the point that in the third year, at least some NBA analysts consider us a legitimate contender, that your friendship with feschuk is clouding your judgement.

And going back to him, if he's so upset about this trade - why doesn't offer us an alternative ... ?

and I can understand fans on a forum missing some of this stuff. But dave is a journalist, he should have a more complete understanding of the miracle that was achieved in this town in the past two years. He has no excuse.

... and one more thing. Looking back at that roster, I'm starting to think that maybe Sam Mitchell is not that bad of a coach after all ... To win 27 games with that team seems almost like a joke, other than CB, you basically have a team that should get its ass kicked even in the D-League ....

Care to elaborate as to why you think Colangelo is a joke?

A joke?WTF are you smoking? Two years ago we were the Joke in the league and he turned us around and we won a division and two straight playoff appearances and we are looked upon as possible eastern conference contenders by some NBA insiders. To have them say this about the "Canadian" team is huge. We've gotten respectability back and it's mostly because of Colangela and the pieces he added after taking over.We are respected and big name players are more inclined to come here because of the perception. And players traded here (ie: O'neil) look forward to coming here.Mostly due to BC at the atmosphere he's created in T.O!!

I think he gets way too much credit.

He walked into a pretty good situation.

Cap room, a high lottery pick, some good young talent already in place...

Good Talent? He replaced nine players, most of which are no longer in the league anymore. BTW they won 27 games that season not because they had talent but because they sucked major ass. The only talent we had were CB4,Charlie V,MoPete,Jose (before he became the player we know now).

Bosh, Jose (was clearly going to be a player if you'd seen him play overseas), Charlie V and Joey Graham (the jury was still out on him at that point) is good, young talent.

And actually they didn't suck major ass. After starting the season 1-15 they actually played some decent ball until shutting down Bosh towards the end of the season and going into tank mode.

He inherited crap IMO.Then turned around completely changed the team imroving from 27wins to 47 wins (Winning a first ever dision title) and did so by changing the starting line up adding Garbo,AP,T.J. And not only that he got rid of Arujo (complete bust, not in the league anymore) and got a serviceable player (Humphries) in doing so.I would have never thought we could get any kind of decent bench player for that schmuck! Not every move has worked to perfection but he's changed this team which was headed knowhere fast before he showed up.

He inherited crap?

It was an ideal situtation.

He had cap room, a high lottery pick, and a 22 year old all-star...

And actually Haffa for Humphries was Mitchell's idea.

it's one thing to have cap space when you're team is decent. Our team two years ago was a joke. And please, don't call Joey Graham good, young talent ... CV was overrated, but at least he was a good assets who got us a good pg. In the end CV ended up on the bench where he belongs, but at the time his value was sky high. To his credit, Colangelo understood that there is no stardom in his future, otherwise he wouldn't have traded him. I remember how much criticism he took for that move, and look how it turned out. TJ Ford was a great player for us, and if not for Jose's emergence, he would still be our starting PG. If he stays healthy, he has a good future ahead of him. CV's future is a lifetime of MLEs.

And I love how all the good moves BC makes are someone else's idea ... Moon was Kelly's idea, Haffa was Sam's idea and so on Hey, I have an idea of myself, let's trade Joey for Lebron, do you think it's doable? Everybody knew that we have to get rid of Araujo, but Bryan was actually able to do it, and to get something of value in return. It was Bryan who talked another GM into doing this trade, not Mitchell.

And to call the situation we've been two years ago "ideal" is ridiculous. What was ideal about it, you had 4 players (only two of them of starter quality) and 12 millions in cap space.
