Raps, Casey lose to Mavs

Quote:
The return to Dallas had plenty of well wishers for Dwane Casey but lacked the one thing he really wanted from the whole exercise — a win.

It wasn’t for a lack of effort, however, something you can say with regularity this season about the Raptors with confidence.

That is the early impact Casey, the former Mavericks assistant, has had on this Raptors squad in the little time it has been his.

Oh, the Raps are going to lose their share, that’s no secret, but they are at least going to make teams earn each and every win.

Friday’s 99-86 loss to the Mavs was the first win by the defending NBA champs in four tries this season.

What the Mavs have that the Raptors still are trying to develop is the knowledge of how to put a team away.

The Raps had that chance after going on a 17-2 run to turn an eight-point deficit into a seven-point lead.

But as quickly as they played themselves back in the game, the Raptors gave back just about everything they gained as Dallas went on a 13-0 run to re-establish a seven-point lead.

“We have to understand how to win to beat a championship team,” Casey said after the game. “You work hard to get that 68-61 lead and then you have to learn how to close it out. That’s the mark of a young team against a veteran team.”

Young Raptors learn lesson in 99-86 loss to Mavericks

Quote:
“We had just went up by seven or whatever it was and I was like, ‘We can’t get up and jump in the air when guys come to the bench,’” said veteran guard Anthony Carter. “We have to act like we’ve been there.

“That’s going to be one of the things I tell the guys: We have to keep our focus and continue to do what got us the lead. We got happy and got complacent; we can’t do that anymore. . . . That was a big mistake and we’re going to learn from it.”

Wasting a 30-point, seven-rebound performance from Andrea Bargnani, the Raptors were done in by a 21-6 Dallas run bridging the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth.

“It’s knowing how to win — we’ve got to understand how to win, (how) to beat a championship team,” said Toronto coach Dwane Casey. “You work hard to get a 68-61 lead and we have to learn how to close it out. It’s a mark of a young team versus a veteran team.

“We’re learning. Again, it sounds like a broken record (but) I like our effort. We’ve just got to take that next step in decision-making in crunch time.”

Toronto fell to 1-2 on the season; Dallas won for the first time in four games on an entertaining night of runs by one team then the other in a see-saw affair.

The newly reconstructed defending champion Mavericks took advantage of 17 Raptor turnovers — it is the single biggest worry of the season for Toronto — to put on a late charge and pull away.

Vince Carter still a factor in the NBA

Quote:
About 20,000 fans strode into the American Airlines Center here Friday night to see the Dallas Mavericks face the Toronto Raptors and they found at their seats one of those of those marketing placards that celebrate the stars of the home team.

Standing back-to-back-to-back are four of the faces of the defending NBA champions, all looking suitably intense and menacing and ready for battle.

Dirk Nowitzki?

Absolutely.

The one-time MVP and Finals hero is the undisputed star of the team.

Jason Kidd?

Of course.

The future Hall of Famer took the Mavs where they have never been before in a compelling victory over the Miami Heat.

Lamar Odom?

Sure, why not?

Multiple champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, gifted multi-faceted player who was the key off-season acquisition.

And . . .

Vince Carter.

Who?

Mavs register first win, at Raptors’ expense

Quote:
The last defending NBA champs to open a season at 0-4 were the 1969-70 Boston Celtics.

Andrea Bargnani scored 30 points and Leandro Barbosa had 20 for the Raptors, 1-2 under first-year coach Dwane Casey, Dallas' top assistant and defensive architect last season.

Toronto used a 17-2 run in the third quarter, completed by Amir Johnson's follow dunk, for a 68-61 lead.

But Dallas finished the quarter with a 16-2 spurt, capped by Vince Carter's three free throws, for a 77-70 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Toronto never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

The Mavericks carried a 29-23 lead into the second quarter, riding a 17-6 rebounding advantage in the opening 12 minutes.

Dallas got off to a better defensive start, a point of emphasis by coach Rick Carlisle. The Mavs had allowed 32, 32 and 28 points in the first quarter of their three games.

The Mavericks went on to lead by as many as 12 in the second quarter.

But Bargnani scored 13 of his 18 first-half points in the period, and Toronto's late 12-0 run narrowed the halftime gap to 50-46.

Nice job INSIDER.

It was about halfway through last night's game that I suddenly realized that VC and Kidd were re-united (que the Peaches and Herb). When you look at the Mavs it's like they've become what the Nets would be had they hung on to the two declining stars, and added Nowitzki. Odom just isn't quite there. I don't think it's the best scenario for the Mavs at all. Maybe they milk the Nets yet again and get Deron. Even then I just can't get as excited about this team. They may have won right when their window was closing.

I agree. It's like pushing an old woman because she cut in front of you in the grocery line. Just let it go.
