Rose's Bulls charge past Raptors

Quote:
CHICAGO - With both teams playing for the fifth time in six nights there was no shortage of effort on display at the United Center on Saturday night.

Execution, on the other hand, was lacking, as one would expect.

The ability of both sides to convert from the field was sorely lacking until reigning league MVP Derrick Rose went to work in the fourth quarter, erasing any hope of a Raptors win and leading the league-best 12-2 Bulls to a 77-64 victory.

Rose finished with 18 points and 11 assists and was sublime in the deciding frame, dishing out five of his assists and scoring a ridiculous hang in the air masterpiece reminiscent of Michael Jordan in his heyday.

“If he is not the toughest (player in the NBA to contain), he’s one of the toughest,” an admiring Raptors head coach Dwane Casey said of Rose after the game.

Taj Gibson also terrorized the Raptors in the fourth, scoring nine of his 11 points along with five rebounds (three at the offensive end).

The Raptors, now 4-9, looked dead and buried against the powerhouse, 12-2 Bulls when Chicago opened the game on a 21-10 run, but the bench and DeMar DeRozan kept Toronto within range.

Raptors in the zone, but fall to powerhouse Bulls

Quote:
CHICAGO—Success is always going to come incrementally for the Raptors this season and often in nuanced ways.

There will be things Dwane Casey sees that others don’t that will be confirmation of the path that they’ve chosen to take in this season of culture change.

And if they don’t translate into too many wins? Well, that’s tough but inevitable.

Casey had to see some things he was pleased with here on Saturday night — despite a 77-64 loss to the Chicago Bulls — and that’s what he’ll be banking on all year.

“There’s no excuse. I never want our guys to be satisfied with losing, but I did like the effort. I did like the focus. I did like a lot that I saw, especially in the first half,” Casey said after the Raptors were blitzed 21-12 in a decisive fourth quarter.

“My hat’s off to Chicago. They’re a very talented, deep basketball team . . . I thought our guys fought, just not enough bullets in the gun to fight a well-coached, well-oiled machine like Chicago.”

But there was some good that may add up to wins later on, or at least provide a baseline for improvement as the season goes along.

Doug's blog

Quote:
Q: Hi Doug. Here's one of the rare questions about the Raptors (as opposed to miscellaneous). I like Casey's approach on defense but I saw a red flag on him riding El mago for way too many minutes, using AC instead of the Blur for backup PG and the Pacers game putting in Big Cat for the crucial possession where he ended up shooting airballs on the charity stripe. Any concerns there? I'm no ball player but I have never shot an airball on a free throw. Yikes for Jamal.

Kam H, Richmond Hill

A: Okay, I’m going to try to rankle a few and debunk this “Bargnani played too many minutes and that’s why he got hurt” stuff that seems to be rampant out there.

Yes, he did play 45 minutes Monday against Minnesota and that’s a lot but it was the only time in seven games he’d been over 38 and he followed that 45-minute night by playing just 29 in Washington, a season low until the Sacramento game.

Even with supposed heavy workload, he’s averaging just 35.2 minutes per game this season, which is lower – marginally – than the 2011-12 season. So, sure, he’s got a muscle problem but who knows how it actually occurred; it certainly wasn’t solely because he’d been shouldering some super-human workload.

And Leandro Barbosa is too pass-adverse to be a point guard, which is why they were grooming Forbes for the third-string spot and went to him when they felt comfortable.

We’ve discussed the Magloire mistake enough, everyone knows it was a mistake and it’s time to let it go.

So, no, there are no concerns right now whatsoever.

Bulls hand Raptors fourth straight loss

Quote:
Carlos Boozer added 17 points and Luol Deng had 14 points for Chicago, which won its fifth straight and improved to a league-best 12-2. Gibson scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth.

The Bulls are 5-0 at home for the first time since opening the 1996-97 season with seven straight wins at the United Center. Chicago has held its opponents to just 66.8 points game on its home court.

DeMar DeRozan and Leandro Barbosa scored 15 points each for Toronto, which dropped its fourth straight.

Chicago was played its ninth game in 12 days, something the Bulls hadn't done since 1972. Chicago is 8-1 over that span.

Toronto played for the seventh time in nine nights.

Chicago led by four entering the fourth quarter, an unusually close game for a team that had won all four of its home games by an average of 20 points per game.

Rose took over with his playmaking, scoring just two points but notching five assists in the final period as Chicago went on a 19-6 run to start the period.

The Raptors didn't score from the foul line until Linas Kleiza made a free throw with 7:14 to go in the fourth. Toronto was just 1 for 7 from the line in game and was whistled for 15 fouls to only seven for Chicago.

Derrick Rose leads Bulls to win over slumping Raptors

Quote:
CHICAGO — Derrick Rose had 18 points and 11 assists, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 77-64 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night.

Rose keyed a seven-point burst to open the fourth period, assisting on three straight field goals. John Lucas III hit a 3-pointer and Taj Gibson scored twice, opening up an 11-point lead for Chicago.

Wow. The SG looks amazing for 48. I went and checked out her other pics on the website in order to see if that was just one flattering photo. She looks good in the other ones.
