Just another game for Casey facing Mavs

Quote:
All Casey is worried about is making sure his young team works hard against the reeling titlists, who had dropped all four regular or pre-season contests heading into Thursday night’s game in Oklahoma City.

“We’re going in there to compete and play with a swagger,” he said.

Forward James Johnson seemed on board with the message.

“We’re as tough as any team out there and we’re going to compete with any team out there. We’re not too amused with their championship status — congratulations, but this is a new year,” Johnson said.

Raps ready for Mavs

Quote:
Arguably the premier shooting 7-footers ever to play the game. Comparisons to Nowitzki have not done Bargnani any good — Nowitzki is an MVP and simply put, the superior player, but there are some similarities in their games. Bargnani has the size to give Nowitzki more problems than most defenders and he has the speed to get the German superstar into foul trouble. Nowitzki went off for 31 points and 13 rebounds the last time these two teams met (a 114-96 Dallas blowout in Toronto), but Bargnani missed the game due to flu-like symptoms. Both Bargnani and Nowitzki missed a Dec. 28 meeting in Dallas.

Raptor coach’s Dallas return no ‘social call’

Quote:
The man who helped shape the Mavericks into a championship team as an assistant last season has no plans to meet up with old pals in the organization, no congratulatory dinners with Dirk, no appointments for a ring fitting.

“It’s not going to be a social call for me,” Casey said after Thursday’s practice. “I have friends there. We’re going to remain friends. We can be friends next summer.”

The return might be better described as a professional campus tour, a chance to introduce his new students to a more accomplished group that’s already matriculated from the Casey Finishing School.

Bieber not getting any love from Raps

Quote:
“I don’t listen to the music,” Bargnani repeated more forcefully, just in case that wasn’t clear the first time.

Someone hustled DeRozan over to mics to address this pressing issue. Don’t blame us. DeRozan started this rumour himself. Plus, we didn’t want Leafs’ Belieber Jake Gardiner to feel so alone.

So we hear you’re an admirer of the musical stylings of Stratford, Ontario’s second-greatest cultural export?

“He’s my favourite singer,” DeRozan said, with a lingering look so deadpan someone on the medical staff went rushing over for the heart paddles.

Raptors coach Dwane Casey ‘not a tyrant’

Quote:
New Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey is never going to hammer home his point with histrionics or shouting, but if he can get the historically defensively inept Raptors to care a bit about stopping the other team, it won’t matter how he makes his point.

“I’m not a tyrant, there’s no question,” Casey said. “It’s a situation where you’re making sure guys do their jobs and it’s all about winning and it’s not about self-satisfaction or doing it my way or the highway or anything like that.

Raptors’ Casey returns to Dallas with mixed feelings

Quote:
“We had talked during the year,” Casey said. “He talked to me and said, ‘Hey, if I get a head coaching job, I want you to go with me. And if you get a head coaching job, I’ll go with you.’ But I knew he was being facetious when he said that because he was going to get it because he is one of the top coaches out there.”

Carlisle landed the Dallas job and hired Casey as the lead assistant in charge of the team’s defensive schemes. After two years of following the Mavericks’ traditional script of underachieving, the two coaches helped Dallas win a championship last year. Casey turned that into his second chance at head coaching, with the Toronto Raptors.

Toronto at Dallas

Quote:
The Raptors arrive in Dallas to open a three-game trip after losing to Indiana 90-85 on Wednesday.

DeMar DeRozan scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to help Toronto trim a 14-point, fourth-period deficit to two, but it wasn't enough. DeRozan also played well down the stretch in Monday's 104-96 win over Cleveland, scoring nine of his 15 points in the final period.

Toronto coach Dwane Casey, an assistant with the Mavericks the last three seasons, is thrilled with DeRozan's late-game exploits, but would also like to see him be more assertive early.

"Start off aggressive, that's one thing I need to do," DeRozan said. "Just got to get off to a better start, but I love the fourth quarter. It's fun to me."

Toronto has been strong defensively in its first two games, although it hasn't faced the stiffest competition. It held the Pacers to 39.5 percent shooting after limiting the Cavaliers to 41.2 percent.

"We got the concept of the defense and we know what we got to do and when we have to do it," Andrea Bargnani said. "The effort is there."

Dallas' defense has been a big reason for its early struggles. It is allowing an average of 108.0 points on 51.8 percent shooting.

Mavs' Cuban on claim that he's given up on 2011-12 season: 'Absolutely ridiculous'

Quote:
"When you're a team that plays like a team, you can't just walk on the court and have all the pieces fit together. You're going to feel old, fat and slow if you have to think about what you're doing and you're not quite in shape to do it.

"We're a team. We play like a team. And when you play like a team, it takes time to practice and get things together. It just takes time."

Cuban wasn't any happier with the 0-2 start that included two blowout losses at home than fans were. But his perspective is different. He pointed to Tyson Chandler, who has said the Mavericks' slow start was predictable, as an example.
