Raptors staying motivated despite missing playoffs

Quote:
“In games the tendency has been the same as it was even earlier in the year in that when things don’t go right offensively, it’s like frustration and: ‘How am I going to get my stuff going here’ instead of concentrating on what we are trying to do at the defensive end. That’s where we lack that mental toughness, but I think we have gotten a little better at it.”
While the tail end of that statement may generate some lively debate among the Raptors fan base, Triano maintains getting his players to practise hard has not been a problem at any point in this season.
“We didn’t play particularly well in two games (on the trip) but I don’t think motivation has been an issue,” he said. “I think these guys have understood from the beginning they all want to get better. They all want to earn playing time and when they get the opportunity they are going out and playing and trying to do the things that we have taught them.”
In that respect, Monday’s practice was very much like every other one the Raptors have had this year. Even after practice, the court remained crowded with players getting in some extra work. Most didn’t leave the gym until a lively half-court shooting contest ended the session. Outside of the post-practice shooting contest, which happens occasionally, that’s been the routine all season with few exceptions.
Sophomore forward James Johnson said the onus has to be on each individual to see the season through playing as hard and practising as hard in these final days with playoffs no longer there was the carrot as they did before their playoff fates had been decided.
“I can only speak for myself, but I know I have a lot of heart and every time I step on the court I’m representing my name, the Toronto Raptors, and I just want to play as hard as I can,” he said. “I never want to quit. It all leading up to next season. I feel this year is a build and we can’t just stop building because we are not having playoff chances. We have to keep playing hard and hopefully get some more wins to give us some more courage and more lift for next season, if there is a next season.”
Triano had most of his players back practising yesterday including Reggie Evans who missed the past two games when his surgically repaired foot began to give him problems. Andrea Bargnani, who sat out Saturday’s game with a sore left ankle, was restricted to weight room and cardio work.
Bargnani’s status for Wednesday’s game against Milwaukee will be updated Tuesday.
As of Monday, though Triano said he was not aware of any injuries on the team that would lead to the Raptors shutting a guy down for the remainder of the year.
“Not unless it is an injury that is going to be harmful to someone down the road and (have) consequences to their future,” he said. “I think we owe it to our fans to continue play the guys that are healthy and if a guy can’t play or isn’t 100% we are going to treat it the same way we did in mid-January. We have to play the guys and I think that’s part of our development and part of their development — learning how to play when you are nicked up a little bit but if it’s something that is going to jeopardize somebody’s career then we would shut him down.”
In other words, business as usual.

Raptors’ dilemma: Stick with Triano or go with another coach?

Quote:
Triano has been dealt a difficult hand — intentionally or unintentionally — in this trying season when Toronto has taken a step back from the Chris Bosh era in a definitive rebuilding process.
The Raptors generally trot out one of the youngest teams in the NBA each night, offering extended minutes to a player with no experience (rookie Ed Davis), two key players in just their second year (DeMar DeRozan and James Johnson), a backup point guard in his third season (Jerryd Bayless) and a player getting consistent minutes for just the second year of his career (Sonny Weems).
The dedication to youth is a surefire way to ensure some difficult nights. The Raptors have had their share of them. There was a 38-point loss Friday to Golden State, and a number of uninspired performances against teams of dubious quality that have offset inspired victories like those over Oklahoma City, Orlando and Dallas on the road, and Boston at home.
It’s a testament to the youthfulness of a roster crying out for some veteran leadership but Triano did not get the benefit of any mid-season additions because the mantra from above was always that this season was about building for the long term future rather than about finding short-term fixes.
But if, for instance, Reggie Evans hadn’t missed 47 games with a broken foot, isn’t it logical to think the team’s record would be better? The Raptors were 8-11 when Evans went down, hardly a world-beating record but not an atrocious one by any means, and if Evans had played a full season, the case could be made that Toronto might have won eight or 10 more games. The season wouldn’t be considered nearly the disappointment that it’s been and a record of close to 30 wins now might have been reason for a greater sense of optimism going into next season.
The impending lockout will be another factor.
Would it make sense for the Raptors to keep a relatively inexpensive head coach on staff — if his option is picked up, Triano will make only half of his salary of just over $2 million for the duration of any work stoppage — or try to hire someone when there are no games being played?
Would it be financially prudent to retain an affordable coach and see what happens over the course of the summer rather than have a vacancy to fill and the need to scramble whenever a labour situation is settled?
But make no mistake about it, there are coaches — current NBA assistants, some on the unemployment list and some working in the D League — who are watching the Toronto situation closely.
There are only 30 jobs like Triano’s in the entire world and if it comes open, Colangelo — or whoever might be in charge — will surely be inundated with resumés and applications.

Raptors Blog by Doug Smith

Quote:
So the chatter at practice Monday got around to motivation and what drives these guys in the final two weeks of the season and we got a lot of the predictable answers about wanting to get better and gain experience and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
But the one point that I liked to hear was the talk about wanting to finish strong because they owe it to the fans.
You know, the people who pay the money for the tickets and still come out even though the season – to steal a line oft-uttered by The Great Dave Perkins – was shot behind the ear a few months ago.
I’m thinking that professional pride, along with the sense of obligation to the paying customer should be enough to assure maximum effort as the final nine games of the season unfold.
That may be a bit Pollyanna-ish but isn’t that the way it should be?
One point that Jay brought up – and it’s the basis of the Bryan quote that’s in today’s story on the coaching situation that I’m sure you’ve all read – is that the makeup of the roster lends itself to a group playing hard as the string runs out.
“These guys have been very professional and maybe it because they’re young and we don’t have an old vet who’s riding it out. The guys who are the veteran guys … are looking for ways to extend their basketball livelihood.”
Sure, there have been some dog games – we all remember Golden State – but overall, he hit the nail on the head. Maybe these kids just don’t know how to mail it in quite yet.
I hope they never figure it out.

At this point, Raptors just out to save face

Quote:
“Maybe it is because they're young – we don't have an old vet who's just riding it out,” said Jay Triano, whose Raptors have nine games left this season. “Guys who are the veteran guys are probably under contract and looking for ways to extend their basketball livelihood.”
Afterward, seven players hung around the gym an extra 20 minutes, competing to see who could score from centre court. There was a lot of trash talk. And a few baskets made. “All the pressure's on Baby Jay!” Johnson crowed after sinking his shot, referring to Triano's teenage son, who had helped out at practice and was now competing with the pros.
“That's team bonding right there,” Raptors centre Alexis Ajinca said.
In the end, Ed Davis was the victor, and $400 richer. “Lucky shot. Twice,” Johnson said.
Sure, each player had put $100 on the line, and that's one way to motivate people. But for a young team looking ahead at the promise of a next season, a high lottery pick in the entry draft, and another year to perhaps transform into a winning team, the moment may have been worth something more than that.

Quitting not an option for the Raptors

Quote:
There are nine low-stakes games left in what has felt like a low-stakes season for the Toronto Raptors. The playoffs have not seemed like a realistic possibility since 2011 started, with individual growth long ago replacing wins as the primary concern.
So, despite some protestations, it must be hard to get worked up for these games -which include two against Milwaukee and singles against Cleveland, Philadelphia and New Jersey, among others -with so little on the line.
"Yeah, I guess so," centre Andrea Bargnani said. "Of course it's hard because you play for nothing, because you're out of the [playoff race]. So it's tough."
It is tempting to criticize Bargnani for the answer, a confirmation of being disengaged, since it jives with some of his worst habits on the floor. But this feels more like honesty. The Raptors are, basically, playing for nothing. Indeed, there is an existential question to the season's last 15 days: What is the point?
"Coming into the season, we knew it was sort of going to be a rebuilding year," forward Ed Davis said. "So we're just building to next year. Guys that are not going to be on this team next year, they're still [battling to get on] other teams. For the guys that are going to be here, we're getting chemistry and all the other things like that."

What are other good tattoo locations for a chick, do you think? I like opinions. I definitely don't want a tramp stamp.

I fucking LOVE tattoos on girls as long as they are good..... most are haha...

The thing is though, I know the "you should sleep with this girl" alarm goes off for me when I see good tats on a girl, not sure if the relationship bell goes off.

My girl now has a couple of tattoos and I like them, but I don't think I would want to see another.

I SWEAR, I had that joke in there intially...but then I was worried you though I might be making a wise-crack about how you have fat thighs from eating too many cookies so I removed it and just left the cookie monster.

Oh in addition to Mr. Mxy's locations, I am a fan of the small hip tattoo.

A lot of it comes down to the tattoo though.

The reason I've never had a tattoo is because I don't feel strongly enough about anything to have it on me for the rest of my life. IE. when I'm 60 and it my body doesn't quite look the same anymore haha

Yeah, that's been my issue exactly. Other than certain song lyrics, nothing has jumped out as something I'd want on my body forever.

I was thinking of basing something around a small daisy... after my dog, Daisy.

that's actually a great idea...you could go with something similar to this on your shoulder
small, delicate, feminine, never outdated and the image has special significance to you alone

you could substitute the colors or go with grey shading
i would stencil it to about the size of your fist

just a suggestion to give you an idea
