Raps keep on giving

Quote:
MEMPHIS — Undermanned is one thing, but undermanned and still handing out gifts like it was Christmas is quite another.

That was your Raptors on Monday as they hung in for about a quarter and a half and then fell apart, handing the Memphis Grizzlies the keys to the comeback via the turnover in a 96-85 loss.

That’s three losses in a row and counting as the Raptors’ road trip continues Tuesday in Dallas against the 24-5 Mavericks.

The 25 Toronto turnovers that led to 28 Memphis points were one more than the previous season high the Raptors set right before the Christmas break in a loss to Detroit when at least they could claim to be moved by the Christmas spirit.

But without Andrea Bargnani (strained left calf muscle) and relying on a three-person big man rotation of Amir Johnson (still dealing with a sore back and a non-factor offensively Monday) little-used Joey Dorsey, and rookie Ed Davis, the Raptors were up against it before the ball was even tipped.

For about 18 minutes of the game, it appeared the Grizzlies, who were coming off a big road win in Indianapolis the night before, might play down to their injury-plagued competition.

Then the turnover barrage began and the Grizzlies caught fire and began pulling away.

Injuries bugging Raptors

Quote:
MEMPHIS — It was the equivalent of taking a malnourished bear, chopping off one of its limbs and sending it back into the wilderness to fend for itself.

That in short is the impact on the Raptors who are starting out a three-game road swing with Andrea Bargnani back in Toronto nursing a strained left calf muscle.

Monday night and for two more games before they return home, the Raptors coaching staff is going to have to find some way to take an already offensively challenged lineup and compete without the 21 points and six rebounds Bargnani brings on a nightly basis.

Starting in Bargnani’s place Monday night was Joey Dorsey although Triano said it would basically be a three-man rotation of bigs with Dorsey and Amir Jonhson to start and rookie Ed Davis coming in early to try and keep fresh legs on the court.

Triano could have started either Dorsey or Davis but went with the bigger of the big options.

“When you look at the fact that they have Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph down below, we have to put a little size on them, hopefully keep them off the glass and see if we can neutralize some of their inside play ... And we’re going to have to share the minutes anyway with Ed,” Triano said.

For Dorsey it was just the second start of the season, his first coming Nov. 28 in a loss at home to Atlanta.

In that game Dorsey played just under 20 minutes and finished with nine points and six rebounds.

Raptors Blog by Doug Smith

Quote:
Hello from Dallas, where the TV choices abound

Better late than never?

A guy can only hope. So, after an entirely uneventful flight, the kind that are most appreciated, here you go:

-

THREE POINTERS

Tricks are for kids

Or coaches. And Jay pulled out a few of them last night; none worked in the end but you have to give a guy credit for trying.

One came on Memphis’s last possession of the first half and was kind of interesting to see.

The Grizzlies got the ball back with about 25 seconds left and were dribbling out the clock as the Raptors were in man-to-man defence. Jay’s right in front of us, yelling “10 seconds, 10 seconds, 10 seconds” and as the clocked got to that point, it was “orange, orange, orange” and we all know what that means, right?

Yep, I’ve seen them switch between man and zone on alternating possessions, now I’ve seen them do it during the same set.

Didn’t work, they fouled Zach Randolph on the play, but it was interesting to see.

Injury-riddled Raptors no match for Grizzlies

Quote:
MEMPHIS, TENN.—Deep into his bag of tricks did Jay Triano dig, searching for something — anything — to help the Raptors overcome a spate of injuries and the absence of their top scorer.

They were moves made out of necessity, gambles that he felt he had to take on the off chance something good would come of it.

Joey Dorsey got his second start of the season, Linas Kleiza spent a large amount of time at power forward and there were odd backcourt combinations galore.

None of it worked, not surprisingly, in a 96-85 loss to the Grizzlies at the FedEx Forum here Monday night but you have to give the coach credit for trying.

“We couldn’t find enough points and in doing that we had to play guys a little bit out of their positions and we end up turning the ball over by asking other guys to handle it a little bit too much,” said Triano, whose team committed a ghastly 25 turnovers that led to 28 Memphis points.

“This is a team (Memphis) that forces a lot of turnovers and they will do that but there were an awful lot of unforced ones, too, and that’s on us.”

Grizzlies roar past Raptors

Quote:
Rudy Gay added 18 for Memphis, which won its second straight. Tony Allen had 14 points and a season-high six steals, part of 15 Memphis steals on the night. Allen also had eight rebounds, also a season high.

“Tony came in and brought the defensive effort,” Gay said. “He got a lot of steals, and, of course, steals start fast breaks. When we have teams play on their heels like that, it's easier for us to get into them.”

Mike Conley and O.J. Mayo had 12 points apiece.

Linas Kleiza led the Raptors with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting. DeMar DeRozan finished with 18 points. Jose Calderon had 13 and Leandro Barbosa scored 11.

Joey Dorsey finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who lost their third straight and fifth in the last six.

Dorsey said he had a feeling Randolph would awaken in the second half. In fact, the veteran warned Dorsey of that.

“The first half we had him scoreless, and he told me: ‘You know I'm coming at you every time I get the ball,“’ Dorsey said of the halftime chat between the two. “So, the second half he came at us. He did work.”

He looks arrogant and angry, so there's a good chance I've already dated Mr. Man Candy.

SSG is probably a better match for me.

Girls always complain about dating the wrong guys, but always turn down Ugly nerds. It's funny.

So, a girl can either have an asshole or a nerd? No in between? Bullshit.

I've dated good guys. But most of the ones I know are already my best friends, and I don't date friends. It's messy.

Problem??

Both guys and gals make the same mistakes (letting their superficiality get the best of them) but women seem to complain about it a lot more.

Personally, I rank personality and intellect way, way ahead of physical appearance, material wealth, popularity, etc. Doing otherwise is exhausting to me.

Can't fight genetics Legia. You are who you are, it took quite a few years for Homo Sapiens to develop into who we are today. You're lying to yourself if you think your testicles don't have a very healthy say on what your wish to attain.

I go by chemistry. Every guy I've ever dated seriously was not attractive to me at first.

Most girls wait for guys to approach them rather than making a move themselves.

More often than not those guys tend to be assholes.

Solution? Identify the good guys (guys who actually talk to you like a human being and not just a piece of ass) and make a move on THEM.

Oh yeah... and that might be the most attractive SSG that I've seen thus far.... AND she actually looks her age!!!

Good guys?

Same as bad guys.

Both are capable of the same things.

Problem is, a lot of the "bad guys" are good talkers. That's where girls (and guys) make the wrong call. We fall for nice words.

Sure they are. Hell I'm capable of taking a sledgehammer to a bag of puppies... but I'd like to think that someone could talk to me and realize that it's not in my character to do that.

That's why you gotta put 'em through the paces and judge 'em by their actions.

Words mean shit.

I have to agree with ya, ToRap. You're right as usual.

OR... I could just send all possible date-worthy guys YOUR way, and you can tell me if they're bullshitting me. Ha!
