Default Daily Raptor Dish - 27 Dec

No Christmas miracle

There was no Christmas magic for Jose Calderon.

The Raptors' starting point guard, who was placed on the inactive list on Dec. 13 with a sore left hip, rejoined the team yesterday at the Air Canada Centre, but was unable to practise.

It was first thought that Calderon would miss only a couple of games when he hurt his hip on Dec.5 in Chicago and, in fact, returned to the lineup on Dec.11 after missing two games.

But he was forced to leave that game as well against Atlanta and his return date still is a mystery, though he is expected to consult with team doctors tomorrow.

All of which means Jarrett Jack will continue to start at point guard, which certainly hasn't been a problem as the 14-17 Raptors are 5-4 with Jack starting.

Short break needed by Raptors

"There's an art to being lazy," Bosh said with a laugh after the Raptors worked out at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night. "You have to pick and choose your spots.

"Sometimes, I'm like, `Okay, maybe I can do something today, maybe do a little maintenance, a little weight-lifting.' Other days, it's, `I'm not doing anything.'"

Christmas Eve and Christmas were days of entire sloth.

"I have learned to relax as time has gone on," Bosh said. "Different things work for different guys. I like to take a total break. Some guys like to watch basketball, watch tape, watch film, work out. I just chill, man. I don't do anything.

Feschuk: Air Carter highly rarefied

All that said, the greatest feats of athleticism I've seen this decade and I've been in the vicinity of Usain Bolt sprinting and Tiger Woods swinging all sprung from Carter's freakish arsenal of airborne grace. His best moments, perhaps fittingly for a guy who hasn't lived up to his competitive potential, didn't come in NBA games. And they certainly didn't come with big games on the line although I was there when Carter jacked up the 19-footer that could have pushed the Raptors to the 2001 Eastern final, and I thought the thing was going in. It was one of the last moments I believed in the idea of Carter as a team-carrying star.

Carter will probably always be best remembered for his surreal levitation over 7-foot-5 Frederic Weis, this while a member of the U.S. national team. But I've never been as impressed by a display of athletic superiority as I was at the 2000 NBA All-Star Weekend in Oakland. Slam-dunk contests, though there are a few classics, are usually a bore. But Carter's opening jam, a reverse 360-degree all-timer, marked both the height of his career and the greatest dunk ever unfurled to these eyes.

In midst of skid, 2-day break could be blessing for Pistons

Asked if he was concerned about the time off, Kuester said: "You're always concerned about certain times of the year, and this is one of them. You just want the guys being focused on what needs to get done. But when it's done, I want them to enjoy their holiday."
