Daily Raptor Dish - 23.11.10

Raptors Blog by Doug Smith

Quote:
Aside from the financial “flexibility” the weekend created, there’s one other thing that Bryan found himself with:
A roster spot.
And expect it to be there for a while.
Last word I got was that there are no plans to go out now and find someone to be the 15th man on the roster, they’d rather let that spot sit vacant to see what else pops up between now and February’s trade deadline.
Ordinarily, you might think they’d go out and find some emergency, third-string point guard but the emergence of Barbosa as someone who can fill that role for a night or two should foul trouble or some minor injury pop up has made them comfortable enough to go with 14 instead of 15. It'll actually be 13 for as long as they leave Alabi in the minors after Davis gets back but they're quite all right with that, too.
And this way, if there’s some one-for-two deal makes itself available (say an expiring contract and a piece of the leftover trade exception for one guy) they can do it without having to get rid of someone on the roster.
Speaking of getting rid of someone on the roster, next week is the final “threshold” in Joey Dorsey’s deal, as I recall.
If he’s still on the roster Dec. 1, his contract becomes fully guaranteed for the rest of the year. I see no reason why they wouldn’t keep him around in case of big man emergencies.

Jarrett Jack: Heat Stumbles Should Tamp Future Superteams

Quote:
Jarrett Jack could tell this was a winning culture. And that was after a loss.

"It was great," the veteran point guard acquired by New Orleans in Saturday's five-player trade with Toronto told FanHouse after the Hornets' loss to the Clippers on Monday night. "The overall atmosphere here was different. The guys wanting to be successful is totally different. ... There are guys who have been in that (winning) situation here, established, veteran guys, All-Star guys -- Emeka Okafor, David West, of course Chris (Paul), who has been around the block before. In Toronto, we were a very young team, and had guys who were kind of going through it and seeing the experience at the same time."

Shootaround 11.22.10: Conspiracy and tragedy

Quote:
Bryan Colangelo isn't even pretending that the trade for Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless was about talent, winning, or success. It was about flexibility: "Whether or not we win games is really not the true issue right now, it's how much we're growing as an organization, how much these young kids are coming along,"

Raptors trade all about building for the future

Quote:
“Bayless coming in here is going to be a backup point guard for us initially,” said Triano. “He brings us quickness, ability to defend at the point guard position and he fits with the mould of the Sonnys and the DeMars and the Amirs.”
Stojakovic’s role is less certain. Once a premier long-range shooter, Triano said hope he hopes the 33-year-old will help Toronto’s lacklustre three-point shooting. But Stojakovic, who averaged just 7.8 points in fewer than 15 minutes a game with New Orleans, may not be with Toronto for long.
Although he waived a sizable portion of a trade bonus — reported to be in the range of $500,000 — to let the deal go through, Colangelo said another trade, a buyout and keeping Stojakovic are all possible.
Toronto’s players seemed to take the deal in stride, with forward Reggie Evans saying he thought Jack seemed pleased to be leaving Toronto.
“He was happy I guess … smile on his face,” Evans said. “It don’t turn me off at all because … the train don’t stop going.”

Raptors’ first-round pick getting back on court

Quote:
Ed Davis is closer than ever to making his NBA debut.
The 13th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft is joining the Erie BayHawks of the NBA’s Development League on a short-term rehabilitation and conditioning stint.
On Sunday, Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo suggested on Sunday that the 6-foot-10 forward would soon be ready to play.
“This is a great opportunity for us to gauge where Ed is physically with regard to his knee and his overall basketball conditioning,” Colangelo said in a statement. “This is a perfect example where the D-League can be used as a ready-made and convenient tool in getting an injured player back on the court.”
Davis, 21, averaged 12.6 points and six rebounds playing in the NBA’s summer league before suffering a meniscus tear in his right knee.
It is expected that the University of North Carolina product will begin getting significant minutes with Toronto once he is back at full strength.
Davis’ impending return and the need to find playing time for him is one reason the Raptors felt comfortable including back-up centre David Andersen in a weekend trade trade with New Orleans.

Sunshine Girl – 23.11.10

SUNshine Girl Kayla, 24, is a small-town girl. This 5-foot-7 Sagittarius lives for love and happiness, but when she's at home, it's art, music and comfy clothes. Big city folk could use that philosophy a little more, and we'd all be a lot happier.

Giorgia Palmas is a well-known model and a TV personality in Italy. I don't think she has to try too hard.

Oh, Matthew Morrison. If only you weren't in a show that is going completely downhill ...

Eh. You're still hot.

SSG's make-up is absolutely horrid. Someone find the Sun's make-up artist and fire his/her ass.
