Daily Raptor Dish - 23.01.2012

Raptors get clipped in L.A.

Listening to Dwane Casey before Sunday’s game, it was clear that were there any way he could have kept Reggie Evans with the Raptors this year, he would have.

“Reggie is one of my all-time favourites. I love him. He’s like a son,” Casey said.

Evans didn’t fit into the Raptors plans this season because of his veteran status and the price tag that comes with that. Casey understands but he’d like to have a little more of that Evans-type intensity on his own roster, no question.

“I fought for him to make the team in Seattle,” Casey said going all the way back to Evans’ rookie season in 2002.

“He was undrafted and we brought in him. I got in an argument with Wally Walker (Sonics President and GM) that day when we were deciding who we were going to cut. I said: ‘Look, we have nobody on our roster like this guy. He’s fearless, he is in every one on one drill and he has a nose for the basketball.”

That was 10 years ago and the very same thing can be said of Evans today.

Toronto Raptors lose eighth straight after falling 103-91 to Los Angeles Clippers

Dwane Casey had a flight to Phoenix during which to stew and think and he’ll have a practice Monday afternoon to watch and listen.

And if he continues to see things he detests in the actions of his Raptors, more change is afoot for a struggling team that has now lost eight straight games.

“We’ve got to evaluate everything,” the coach said in the wake of yet another disheartening capitulation, this one a 103-91 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers here on Sunday afternoon.
In the third quarter, Casey sent a loud and emphatic message about how disgusted he was. The second Clippers basket of the third quarter was a dunk by DeAndre Jordan off about a 40-foot lob pass from Chauncey Billups, a play made possible because Amir Johnson took his time getting back on defence.

Less than a minute later, Aaron Gray replaced Johnson, who watched the rest of the game from the bench.

“That was one of our emphases of the game — we talked about getting back in transition, not letting those guys outrun us and jogging back and not running back,” said Casey. “That was an issue and I just thought Aaron Gray was sprinting back and doing a good job getting back and Amir wasn’t and those types of things are not going to be acceptable.”

Johnson chalked his benching up to it being a series of defensive mistakes and not one specific issue; Casey says he’s going to keep searching for guys who want to play.

“I have to find seven to eight guys that are just going to come out to compete,” he said. “We can’t spot a team, especially a team as good as this one, 16 points in the first quarter and then expect to bounce back from it.”

Raptors lose eighth straight

“Another loss — and the way we lost is definitely frustrating,” DeRozan said. “We dug ourselves our own hole. We tried to fight back, but teams are too good in this league to allow that. Teams are going out there and jumping on our team. No one likes to take a loss, so we need to act like it from the start.”

The Clippers never trailed. It took just 15 seconds after the opening tip for Griffin to slam home Randy Foye's alley-oop lob to start a 22-6 run.

Los Angeles led 49-37 at halftime after Jordan helped the team build an 18-point lead late in the first quarter with 10 points and nine rebounds.

“Our starts have been horrendous,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. “We compete harder in practice than we do to start the games. That is nothing against the Clippers. They've got a very solid basketball team, and they are going to be in the money at the end of the day.”

Mo Williams leads the Clippers past Toronto, 103-91

The pain in Mo Williams' right foot surfaced toward the end of training camp last month, becoming more intense as the regular season progressed through January, finally forcing the Clippers guard to shut it down for three games.

Since his return from a sore foot, Williams has been playing as if he has been possessed, seemingly making every shot he takes, making plays for the Clippers in the last three games that have been needed with Chris Paul sitting out his fifth consecutive game Sunday because of a strained left hamstring.

Williams was at it again Sunday during the Clippers' 103-91 victory over the Toronto Raptors at Staples Center.

He scored 26 points, his third straight game scoring 20-plus points off the bench. He was eight for 15 from the field, including three for six from three-point range, and seven for seven from the free-throw line in 26 minutes 43 seconds.

"Our training staff recommended to me that I shut it down for a couple of days and let it go away," Williams said. "We got really aggressive on the treatment and got the feeling well enough where I don't really feel too much pain afterward."

He scored 19 of his points in the fourth quarter before he departed with 2:54 left and the Clippers leading, 100-82.

At one point, Williams scored 17 in a row for the Clippers.

"Like I said, any time you do something, you're not doing it alone," Williams said.
