Raptors unable to beat the Heat

Quote:
Miller, who had not scored a single point at American Airlines Arena since his return 10 games ago and had just 15 points total to show for those 10 games, was the Miller of old draining threes from all over the court in Miami’s 120-103 win over the Raptors.

Not that LeBron was invisible. Far from it. The Raptors made sure he was needed late into the game, despite going into the locker room at the half down 26. He still got his, going off for 38, but it was Miller’s 32, particularly the 24 in the first half that set the tone in this one.

“They were smart,” Raptors head coach Jay Triano said. “They went small and they played all their small guys and that still left a mismatch with LeBron at the four. That left a shooter open and one of our bigs having to guard a shooter until we finally put Bargnani on (Miller) so we matched up better on the perimeter.”

For the game, Miller was 12-for-20 from the field and 6-for-11 from long range. He might have done more damage but came out midway through the fourth when he appeared to bang his taped right thumb, but his first half had the Heat up by 26.

LeBron leads way with 38 as Miami tops Toronto

Quote:
Mike Miller came into Saturday with exactly zero points at home this season.

He now has 32.

Getting his long-awaited Miami breakout game, Miller scored 22 points in the second quarter alone, helping the Heat beat the Toronto Raptors 120-103 to snap a four-game slide.

LeBron James finished with 38 points and 11 rebounds for Miami, which played without Dwyane Wade (migraine) and Chris Bosh (left ankle sprain). James Jones scored 15 and Eddie House added 13.

The Heat led 32-17 after one quarter and 66-40 at the half, then held on after Toronto — which had big-time roster issues of its own — cut the lead to 10 with 10:13 remaining.

DeMar DeRozan scored 30 and Andrea Bargnani added 28 for the Raptors, who wrapped an 0-5 road trip and dropped their seventh straight overall. Toronto had only nine players available for the game, but had more than enough to put a serious scare into the Heat.

Jose Calderon had 14 points and 13 assists for Toronto, which also got 14 points from Amir Johnson.

DeRozan and Bargnani combined for 25 of Toronto’s 37 points in the third quarter, giving the Raptors plenty of life, and when Bargnani hit a three-pointer with 6:27 remaining, the Miami lead was down to a tenuous 99-92.

Mario Chalmers hit his third three-pointer of the game for Miami 21 seconds later, restoring the 10-point margin, and the Heat found a way to end their longest losing streak of the season. James drove from the left wing for a three-point play with 5:12 left, pushing the lead to 106-94.

A minute later, James provided the exclamation point.

Unanswered question

Obviously, I didn’t get a chance to ask Jay or any of the coaches what specifically had occurred late in the first quarter but there was a notable substitution pattern that, if I remember, I’ll check on tomorrow.

Jerryd Bayless went in about his normal time for Jose Calderon, entering the game with 3:32 to go in the quarter.

But 76 seconds later, he was back on the bench, replaced by Sundiata Gaines.

Even in these times of moving guys in and out quickly to find something that works, that was a fast hook.

Now, I know Bayless has been banged up, his ankle is still a bit of an issue, but, as we’ve pointed out before, he remains a wee bit tentative on offence after a rather quick start to his time with the Raptors.

I know the coaches are working with him to improve his game-management skills and to teach him how to run a team but he still needs to play to his strengths and he isn’t right now.

Three on five

Yes, they did some scoring in the second half last night – and there’s not many things easier to than play against a team that’s up 30 and coasting – but that was out of the ordinary of late.

Before getting to 103 against Heat, the HOTH had gone five straight games without getting to 100, the longest steak of offensive woes since a six-game stretch back in December, 2008.

Why? Well, at one point they had both Julian Wright and Sundiata Gaines on the floor and because they are both a bit offensively-challenged, it allowed two Miami players to kind of freelance defensively and take away much of what Toronto wanted to do.

That’s not taking away from either of those two Toronto guys but that’s just a simple fact.

Haven’t seen this often enough

If you’re looking for one good thing, I guess you could point to the fact DeRozan went for 30 and Bargnani scored 28 against Miami.

On a team starved for offence (the absences of Kleiza, Weems and Barbosa kicks the crap out of this team’s ability to score a lot) those two have to each have big nights for them to win and it’s good to see that they can.

It’s just not been often enough.

Saturday night was the first time in eight games – stretching back to the win over Sacramento – that both had topped 20.

Not surprisingly, that’s the last time they won.

Raptors fall to Bosh-less Heat

Quote:
Miller got his first chance to start for Miami, thanks to the cobbled-at-the-last-minute lineup Heat coach Erik Spoelstra had to put together because of Wade's absence. Wade was in the building for Miami's shootaround practice Saturday morning, then went home to continue battling his migraine — a problem he dealt with somewhat regularly in the past.

He wasn't in the arena for the game, and in the early going, he wasn't exactly missed. Jones was 4 for 4 in a 13-point first quarter, and the Heat were off and running.

The second quarter was all about Miller.

He came into the game 0 for 7 in Miami this season, all on three-point tries, and rattled in a jumper from the right side of the foul line midway through the opening quarter. In the second, he put on the sort of show Miami envisioned when it gave him a US$25-million, five-year deal during last summer's free-agent bonanza.

Miller made 8-of-12 shots, 5 of 8 from three-point range, on his way to the biggest second quarter by any player in the franchise's 23-year history. Walking onto the court after a timeout midway through that period, James gave him a pat on the head, followed by another slap on the back.

“Welcome,” James said.

The 32 points matched the 13th-biggest scoring night of Miller's career. He also had 10 rebounds, completing his 44th double-double.

LeBron leads Heat in romp over Raptors

The Heat led 32-17 after one quarter and 66-40 at the half, then held on after Toronto — which had big-time roster issues of its own — cut the lead to 10 with 10:13 remaining.

A commitment to defense almost changed everything, DeRozan said.

“The first half we were letting them get wide open threes,” he said. “That was killing us. They got into a rhythm.”

The Heat got that rhythm back just in time.

Mario Chalmers hit his third three-pointer of the game 21 seconds after Bargnani’s 3, restoring the 10-point margin, and the Heat found a way to end their longest losing streak of the season. James drove from the left wing for a three-point play with 5:12 left, pushing the lead to 106-94.

With Wade, Bosh out, Heat stop Raptors to snap 4-game slide

Quote:
"This is a perfect example of a team-will win," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Guys were involved on both ends of the court. A lot of players were engaged and involved in the offense."

With Wade out due to his recurring issue with migraines, and with Bosh missing a second consecutive game due to the sprained left ankle sustained last week against the Chicago Bulls, James said he figured he would have to channel his inner Cavalier.

"My mindset goes to back when I was in Cleveland, not having a superstar alongside of me, not having a dominant player alongside of me," James said 90 minutes before the opening tip. "That takes nothing away from my teammates at all. It's just the facts."

While James went for 38 points, his eighth consecutive game with 25 or more, one off Wade's franchise record, as well as 11 rebounds and six assists, he wasn't exactly alone.

Instead, Mike Miller, who had scored a total of 15 points in his month-long comeback from a preseason thumb injury, scored 22 points in the second quarter, the most ever by a Heat player in a second period, on the way to 32, the 19th 30-point game of his 11-year career. Miller added 10 rebounds and three assists.

It was the 10th time in the franchise's 23 seasons the Heat have had a pair of 30-point scorers in the same game and the third time this season.

SUNshine Girl Sam, 20, is certainly outstanding in her field. Sorry. That's an old joke. But this pub-hopping snowboarder type is outstanding! When not making hay while the sun shines, she likes the apres ski activities like having the fireplace on (we remember when you had to light 'em), hot-tubbing and sipping cocoa.

Lol @ what Ed Davis did. He purposely knocked off Lebron's headband. When I saw that last night there was a stare down... it was awesome.

Man candy seems as distraught as I am that I ran outta coffee.

But if he wanted to run out, buy me some coffee, then deliver it in his underwear? I'd be ok with that.
