Daily Raptor Dish - 22.02.11

Raptors run a full practice — really!

It was a rarity for Raptors head coach Jay Triano — a full complement of players to utilize at a practice.
Missing just forwards Reggie Evans (personal) and Linas Kleiza (out for season), the Raptors were able to play 5-on-5 and go through their offensive sets for what must have felt like the first time in ages.
Refreshed from the all-star break, the team had what Triano termed “a really good practice.”
A rash of injuries and a tough schedule prevented Toronto from getting in more than a handful of full-squad practices over the past couple of months.
“It was kind of nice, we got a lot done,” said the coach.
“We looked at some of our stuff offensively and we haven’t had an opportunity to do that (lately) and it might be one of the only times we can have a good practice since (the grind) is starting back up after this week.”
Triano said Evans is with his family after the birth of his son but is expected to be back with the team for Wednesday’s home game against Chicago. Without a full practice with the team under his belt since his foot injury though, don’t expect to see Evans in the lineup for that game.
But it is clear a return is not that far off.

Raptors must improve on defence: Triano

“We have to be better defensively,” Triano said when queried about what he is looking for out of his team down the stretch.
“There are three things that you have to do that can help your defence, get back in transition, which takes away easy baskets — you give up three of those in a game and that really hurts your opponent’s field goal percentage.”
That’s a question of effort, which might be the key, because even though this is hardly a group that loves to defend, with more of a commitment to it, the ugly numbers could improve at least a little bit.
How bad are the stats? Though Toronto only ranks 23rd in the league in points against (104.5 points per game), when the more revealing defensive rating measure is taken into account (points allowed per 100 posessions), Toronto, at 111.5 slips all the way to 29th, though to be fair, that is an improvement over last season’s 113.2 defensive rating.
As for the other two keys to defensive improvement — Triano added that the Raptors must also improve at boxing out because that will limit second-chance opportunities and must make sure they get farther up on opponents to contest shots.
Again, all three areas are more about effort than they are about actual skill. Yes, gifted defenders who are always in the proper stance and have better lateral quickness will guard better than those who aren’t natural stoppers, but even a bad defender can become passable if he desires to be and makes himself a pest.

Raptors dangle first-round pick ahead of trade deadline

Bryan Colangelo is dangling a carrot for other NBA general managers as the league’s trade deadline looms.
Colangelo said that, between now and Thursday afternoon’s deadline, he’s willing to part with one of the two first-round picks the Raptors have in June’s draft.
“We might consider doing something now with the Miami (first-round pick) if the right kind of player can be obtained,” the Raptors president and general manager said in an e-mail.
But fans looking for some major transaction to boost the sagging fortunes of the 15-41 team may end the week disappointed because there hasn’t been a lot of movement in any trade discussions.
“We are having discussions with several teams, but mostly for smaller type deals that don’t compromise our plan of acquiring future assets or creating more flexibility,” said Colangelo.

Raptors Blog by Doug Smith

Q: Some of the U.S. media, including Sir Charles, actually had some good things to say about the Raps youth and future. In your opinion, what needs to be done and how quickly until this team is a perennial deep playoff contender? Bonus question: Can it be done with Bargnani as the top one or two talent on the roster?
Ron B, Kingston
A: It needs a stud three; a rebounding four or five, some time to grow and some help from other franchises. Short answer: I have no clue how long and anyone who says they do is lying.
And not as No 1 but perhaps as a 1A or a 2.

New Raptors math: DeRozan+Bargnani=Bosh

DeMar DeRozan and Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors have combined for 50 points in games in which they’ve both scored at least 20 points six times since Jan. 4. That’s significant, since one of the concerns arising out of Chris Bosh’s departure was whether DeRozan and Bargnani would learn to play off each other. … Bargnani, incidentally, leads all Eastern Conference players in scoring this month with 26.9 points.

Raptors Game Day

Who's hot? Andrea Bargnani averaged 29.3 points on 50% shooting in his last six games before the all-star break.
Who's not? Sonny Weems had a weirdly inactive 24 minutes against Miami on Wednesday: two points, two rebounds, two missed field goals.
Who's hot? Gerald Henderson has given the offensively dire Bobcats a spark off of the bench, averaging 20 points his last two outings.
Who's not? D.J. Augustin has had an awful February, averaging 8.7 points -- on 31% shooting -- 4.6 assists.

Charlotte vs. Toronto

The Raptors (15-41) haven't played since an emotional 103-95 loss to Miami on Wednesday, with Chris Bosh making his first return to Toronto since joining the Heat.
The Raptors stayed close the entire way and were within four points with less than 4 minutes to play, but couldn't pull off the upset and lost for the 17th time in 19 games.
"I thought the energy was good and I thought our guys really competed," coach Jay Triano said. "That's the staple that we want to continue to have."
Triano would probably also like to see his team end its road struggles and get more production from players other than Andrea Bargnani and DeMar DeRozan.
Bargnani scored 17 of his 38 points against Miami in the fourth quarter and DeRozan finished with 24, but no other Raptor scored more than eight. In the last six games, Bargnani is averaging 29.3 points - 7.4 above his team-leading average - while DeRozan has scored 20.2 points to top his season average by 4.3.
This will be the Raptors' first road game since losing at Milwaukee on Feb. 8, and they'll try for their first win away from home since beating Cleveland on Jan. 5. They are one loss from matching the franchise's longest road skid, set from Dec. 1, 2004-Jan. 14, 2005.

Jackie's goal is to own a hotel/bar, which seems like a fine pursuit indeed. This 5-foot-2, hazel-eyed Gemini has a two-year-old Maltese Yorkie named Charlie and lists her likes as clubs, pizza and scary movies such as The Exorcist. Jackie, 21, says her most memorable meeting is our own intrepid photographer, Jack (J.B.) Boland. Now that's scary!
