Raptors pumped about Bargnani's return

Quote:
It’s not a coincidence that the Raps have not won since Bargnani was injured. He was leading the team in scoring with 22.3 points a night while giving his team 6.5 rebounds a game and playing solid defence for perhaps the first time in his career.

In his absence the Raptors averaged exactly 79 points a night, an output that even with a better defensive team makes winning all but impossible.

Bargnani wasn’t ready to circle Sunday as his return date yet. He sees no point in making any definitive statements, but if it’s not Sunday in Los Angeles it will almost assuredly be Tuesday in Phoenix after one more practice.

Bargnani isn’t the kind of athlete who blows his own horn, but he sees the impact his absence has had on the team.

“When I’m in the post I think I help a lot, even if I don’t score,” Bargnani said. “Amir (Johnson) for example, when rolls to the basket he’s got more people with him. If I’m on the floor my guy usually stays with me so he’s not helping (on Amir).”

And while he’s sure his absence affects DeMar DeRozan as well, he admits he doesn’t really watch the guards that much.

“I watch the big guys,” he said.

HEAR AND THERE

The worry about DeMar DeRozan. He’s not even scoring the garbage points that offensive players usually end up with when playing for terrible teams. At this stage of his career, he’s not even Lamond Murray ...

Raptors hoping to roll with Bargnani against Clippers

Quote:
Bargnani could be back in uniform Sunday afternoon when the Raptors face the Clippers at the Staples Center to begin a five-game road trip.

Bargnani, who has missed six games with strained calf, practised with the Raptors at UCLA on Saturday afternoon, as did Jerryd Bayless, who has been out 13 games with a sprained ankle.

In the ever-careful world of the Raptors, both are being declared “game-time” decisions, with the suggestion being Bayless is a bit closer than Bargnani.

Chris Paul may return from hamstring injury Sunday versus Raptors

Quote:
Chris Paul's strained left hamstring has sidelined him for four games, but the guard could make his return Sunday when the Clippers play host to the Toronto Raptors at Staples Center.

Coach Vinny Del Negro said after practice Saturday that Paul completed a battery of basketball-related activities, including shooting, conditioning, stretching and lifting weights, and that he looked good.

Paul had completed many of the same drills Friday, and he performed well enough then that the Clippers upped his workload on Saturday and he performed even better, making it likely that he'll play Sunday.

Still, the decision will be made during Sunday morning's workout, Del Negro said.

"If he does [play], it will be restricted minutes," he added

Toronto at Los Angeles

Quote:
Toronto's current seven-game skid is its longest since a 13-game losing streak Jan. 12-Feb. 2 last season, and it has also dropped 29 of 32 on the road dating back to Jan. 7, 2011. Among those defeats was a 94-90 loss to the Clippers on March 26, and the Raptors are the NBA's lowest-scoring team on the road this season with 81.9 points per game.

Like Los Angeles, Toronto is dealing with injuries, most notably leading scorer Andrea Bargnani's strained left calf. Bargnani had a game-high 27 points during a 98-93 home win over the Clippers on Feb. 13 but missed last season's visit to Staples Center because of an ankle injury.

The 7-foot Italian has missed the past five games but could return Sunday. Guard Jerryd Bayless sat out his 13th consecutive contest during a 94-84 defeat to visiting Portland on Friday.

The Raptors got off to another slow start, scoring 14 points in the first quarter for the third time in four games.

"Somehow, some way, we've got to get four good quarters together and get healthy," coach Dwane Casey said. "Health is huge in this league. It's not a forgiving league if you're not healthy."

Griffin's numbers against Toronto have been plenty robust. He topped 20 points and had at least 15 rebounds in each of last season's matchups.

Williams will try to score at least 25 points for his third straight game overall, but he averaged 10.0 during his two against the Raptors last season - one while with Cleveland. Paul, meanwhile, has averaged just 7.7 points on 22.6 percent shooting in his past three meetings with Toronto.

Raptors swingman and Los Angeles native DeMar DeRozan had 22 points Friday, but scored just seven on 3-of-15 shooting during his last visit to his hometown in the March defeat.
