Post Daily Raptor Dish - 17.03.10

Time to play big

Quote:
The Raptors could have really shaken up their rotation had they decided to put Andrea Bargnani into the second unit.
Even though Bargnani has fallen back into his nasty habit of disappearing in games, he won’t be losing his starting role anytime soon.
When he was playing at a high level back in January, Bargnani was making a pretty compelling case as an all-star.
He wasn’t settling for jumpers, was rebounding, blocking shots, getting to the line and providing that much-needed interior defence.
When the Raptors needed Bargnani to step up in Chris Bosh’s absence, he had a difficult time reacting to the added attention of double teams.
With Jose Calderon expected to return to the starting unit for Wednesday’s meeting against the visiting Atlanta Hawks, one of the beneficiaries should be Bargnani.
Calderon is more inclined to defer than Jarrett Jack.
Calderon’s jumper, which is dropping, also makes him more dangerous in pick-and-roll sets.
A lot needs to be improved for the Raptors to get back on track and a lot will be asked of Bargnani, who needs to step up.

Raps flip the switch

Quote:
“We do need to shake things up a little bit," head coach Jay Triano said.
Triano wouldn’t get into details, which is his right.
He did confide that he’s thought a lot about tweaking his rotation, but how it all gets played out remains to be seen.
“I can make change just to make change," Triano said. “I don’t know if you want to throw four or five guys’ rhythm off ... not that we’re playing with any rhythm."
In turning to Calderon, Triano is basically going with the hot hand.
During the team’s 0-4 trip, Calderon rediscovered his jumper in Golden State, keeping the Raptors close until the shot-happy Warriors torched them by exposing their inability to defend the perimeter.
In Portland, Calderon was the starting point guard when the third quarter began, a 12-minute sequence that saw the Raptors outscore an opponent in the frame for the quite some time.
When Calderon was asked whether he cared about coming off the bench or starting, his response was predictable.
“I care about winning," he said. “We’ve lost too many games the last couple of weeks.
“It’s time for us to win.”

Redemption on Raptors' minds down stretch

Quote:
But unless the Raptors start playing well as a group – and that means getting consistently above-average performances from top players like Hedo Turkoglu, Andrea Bargnani and Chris Bosh – any change will have no discernible impact.
"We're not so much worried about Atlanta as we are ourselves right now; we have to get better and make strides," said the coach.
Calderon is just echoing sentiments he has been espousing all season. Right from opening night, when he started, through a near 40-game stretch where he came off the bench behind Jack, he has insisted it didn't matter what his role is.
"I care about winning like I always say," said Calderon. "We have to win, that's what matters."
To win, though, Toronto is going to have to correct a litany of mistakes that have arisen over the past two weeks.
They once again are being hammered on the defensive glass – Golden State had 18 offensive rebounds and Portland 19 in Toronto's past two losses – and their transition defence is lead-footed.
"It's not just one thing, I think it's a little bit of everything," said Calderon. "We have to be ready to get back to where we were."

Kinda makes the coffee taste a little bit better this morning, doesn’t it?

Will Jack pay price for Raptors’ slide?

Quote:
Privately, the concern in some quarters is Jack might be put off by losing the starting job he’s managed to win in both Portland and Indiana.
Normally one of the most approachable players on the team, smiles from Jack have been few and far between recently, though he says not to read anything into that.
“Nope,” he said when asked if the long face was related to a possible change of standing on the depth chart. “There was a change last game and I didn’t take it personally at all. If that’s what it is I’ll go with the flow and come off the bench like I’ve been doing … regardless of what happens I still go out and play hard, and play my brand of basketball. Nothing changes.”
Jack’s statistical performance in his past five games doesn’t seem to merit losing his starting role, given he’s averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 assists on 54 per cent shooting while committing just six turnovers in total. Calderon has averaged 12.6 points and 6.0 assists while shooting 46 per cent and making nine turnovers, though he has been shooting well of late, making 13 of his last 25 shots over three games.

The hot hands win hands down

Quote:
"I have a hard time in the second group finding guys who have warranted the ability to start for the most part," Triano said yesterday as the team prepared for a game tonight against Atlanta. "I could make change just to make change. I don't know if we want to throw four or five guys' rhythm out, not that we've been playing with a whole lot of rhythm."
And therein lies the rub: The Raptors have lost nine of their last 10 games, and have looked lost on both ends of the court for large stretches of action in the process. There is not a whole lot of rhythm left to preserve.

Raptors Game Day

Quote:
ATLANTA AT TORONTO
7 p.m., Air Canada Centre
TV: TSN 2 Radio: Fan 590
THE HAWKS
Who's hot? Jamal Crawford remains the favourite to win the Sixth Man Of The Year award. He has connected on 15 of his last 24 field-goal attempts.
Who's not? Atlanta signed forward Joe Smith in the offseason to add some veteran toughness. But Smith has not played more than 15 minutes in a game in more than a month.
THE RAPTORS
Who's hot? Amir Johnson averaged 13.5 points and six rebounds per game in Toronto's last two losses, shooting 71% from the field.
Who's not? Jarrett Jack combined for just 14 points and eight assists over the last two games, playing 39 total minutes.

Mengke Bateer's Second Career Only Slightly More Absurd Than His First

Quote:
If you picked one name you never thought you'd hear again, 90 percent of you would say Mengke Bateer. A short-lived NBA career has given way to an acting career. By "acting" we of course mean murder with coconuts.
Bodyguards and Assassins premiered last month, a big-budget Chinese epic about Sun Yat-sen's secret meeting to overthrow the last imperial dynasty. And when you need a seven-foot monk, who're you going to call but Bateer, he of the 3.4 ppg and 2.5 rpg?

Bateer makes his triumphant entrance at about 2:00 in this scene, killing a dude with his hat. After that it's just coconut after coconut, chucked at the head of the would-be assassins. Finally, a climactic coconut dunk. You get the feeling if the NBA used coconuts instead of basketballs, he'd still be there.
Eventually, he's stabbed about a million times, and must leave the court because of his open wound. But this is magical realism Chinese cinema, and it's not nearly enough to kill him.

mengke bateer acting has nothing to do with nba basketball. this should be removed. also, i don't think we should be advertising on behalf of national or city newspapers. the corporatism of those logos in this free space offends me.

Hey Kuzzy! Thanks for starting the censorship train! I'm a huge fan of having my thoughts and opinions on the internet interfered with.

Freedom of speech is so overrated.

i can't believe that censorship has taken place. it is sad when 1 complaint can cause this much change.... must be canadian editors, god knows we don't want anyone offended, except the 99% of us who saw no problem with the thread... why doesn't kuzzy just go to a different forum where those under 16 are running the discussions and moderating the boards... sigh, this is far more scary than that shit we see on the floor game after game! thanks kuzzy, you probably have driven more than a few of the better posters off this site, pandering to the squeeky wheel is not a good way to build and maintain loyalty in your membership.

my patience for Kuzzy's attitude, that he knows what is good for me and the rest of us on this forum is tiring! I am 47 years old and don't need another set of parents telling me what to look at and telling me what is or isn't good for me. if he doesn't like the thread, he doesn't have to look at it, like many on here don't. since we are now paying the price for his ridiculous complaint, i am concerned that many of the good discussions i have read and taken part in over the past couple of years will now be affected by his archaic view of life. as 'cuda said, guys like sports, and women, and when the two are together, it is very cool. if he doesn't like it, he can go find a teletubbie site to play on!! geesh
