STAR: Jose Calderon sprains ankle in loss to Detroit Pistons

This was supposed to be about the night Andrea Bargnani came back and the Raptors were whole; a chance for Dwane Casey to see what he had for the first time in 20 games.

That lasted less than half a game.

Yes, Bargnani came back, just long enough to see teammate Jose Calderon helped to the locker room with a sprained right ankle that put an even bigger damper on a desultory Raptors performance in a 105-86 loss to the Detroit Pistons here Saturday night.

Calderon was injured just over halfway through the second quarter, crumpling to the court just in front of the Toronto bench when he got tangled up with Detroit’s Brandon Knight as both were running up the floor.

He immediately clutched his right ankle, writhing in pain and was helped to the locker by teammates, unable to put any weight on his foot.

The original report was a sprained right ankle — a team spokesman said x-rays at the Palace of Auburn Hills came back negative — and he will be re-evaluated in Toronto on Sunday.

But when Calderon stepped on Brandon Knight’s foot at full speed and had to be helped/carried to the locker room by teammates, the night took a turn for the worse ... except for the ping pong ball counters.

X-rays were negative but in a season where results aren’t a priority, expect to see the Raptors proceed with the same caution they did bringing Bargnani back.

It likely won’t be 20 games, but Calderon certainly won’t be rushed back.

In truth, the night was already on the skids long before Calderon hit the deck. The Raptors were down 24 when the Spaniard joined fellow national team point guard Ricky Rubio on the sidelines.

Rodney Stuckey had 20 points and eight assists and Brandon Knight scored 19 first-half points as the Detroit Pistons routed the Toronto Raptors 105-86 Saturday night.

The Pistons, who are now 11-6 since a 4-20 start, had six players in double figures and shot over 50 percent for the second straight night.

Toronto, which beat Detroit by 20 in their first meeting this season, was led by DeMar DeRozan’s 15 points, but only two others reached double figures.

“I'm shocked that we came out with that kind of effort,” said Toronto coach Dwane Casey. “There was no defensive focus, there was no screening — there was no fundamental that we executed tonight, and I'm shocked.”

Things got even worse for the Raptors in the second quarter, when Jose Calderon stepped on Knight's ankle at top speed and badly sprained his right ankle. He did not return to the game.

“We'll have to come up with something,” Casey said about replacing Calderon in the lineup. “We have Jerryd (Bayless) and (Gary) Forbes at the point, and LB (Leandro Barbosa) can slide over. We'll figure it
