Raptors value takes a drop

Quote:
The Los Angeles Lakers are the NBA's most valuable team, and 12 franchises lost money in the 2008-09 season, according to Forbes magazine.
In its annual listing of the value of NBA franchises, Forbes finds Lakers to be worth $607 million US, up four per cent for the league champions. Second are the New York Knicks at $586 million, but that is a four per cent drop. The Knicks led the rankings for the four previous seasons.
The Chicago Bulls ($511 million), Detroit Pistons ($479 million) and Cleveland Cavaliers ($476 million) round out the top five.
The Toronto Raptors -- 11th on the list -- were estimated to be worth $386 million, citing a three per cent drop in value.
At the bottom of the 30-team rankings are the Milwaukee Bucks at $254 million.
The teams losing money in the last 12 months are the Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, Charlotte Bobcats, New jersey Nets, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies and Milwaukee Bucks.

Out of step

Quote:
It was their second road game in as many nights and the Toronto Raptors needed someone -- anyone -- to step up.
With starters Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon both in street clothes, it was all the more important.
And when too few Raptors beyond Chris Bosh elevated their games, the 117-95 pasting they suffered at the hands of the struggling Milwaukee Bucks last night was not surprising.
Bosh had 26 points and 10 rebounds to extend his strong string of performances, but he had little help with Bargnani (sore right ankle) and Calderon (hip) out and Hedo Turkoglu ineffective.
The Raptors are allowing 108.7 points per game and had another miserable defensive effort. They fell to 0-7 when allowing opponents to shoot 50% or better.
"Other guys got a chance to step up today and I don't think anybody really did," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "It came down to not being able to get stops. We had matchup problems all night long."

Replay

Quote:
Bucks guard Roko Ukic, playing against his former team for the first time, scored 17 points -- which was more than anyone on the Raps with the exception of Chris Bosh.
BUCKS GET A SCARE
Milwaukee's only real scare came when Brandon Jennings crumpled to the floor in the closing seconds of the third quarter after he hurt his left knee in a collision driving to the basket. He sat out half the fourth quarter while the training staff checked his knee before exiting for good. The 20-year-old, however, should be ready for the Bucks' next game.
"I went to the rack, came down funny and just hyperextended it," said Jennings, who said he was scared as soon as it happened. "I don't like knee injuries anyway, I've never had any, but from seeing other people with knee injures, you can be out a long time."
SPREAD AROUND
Milwaukee got balanced offence with seven players scoring a dozen points or more.
"Any time you have five or six guys in double figures, you're going to have a pretty good game," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said.

No chance without Calderon, Bargnani

Quote:
It was a night for someone to take control, a night when a weakened team needed an unexpected boost, when the Raptors looked for someone to pick up some slack. They got nothing.
They got nothing from Hedo Turkoglu, the high-salaried free-agent acquisition. They got nothing from Marco Belinelli, the frenetic backup, who is supposed to bring consistent energy. They got nothing from rookie DeMar DeRozan.
What they got Ė not unexpectedly Ė was a loss.

Raptors Blog by Doug Smith

Quote:

Good to see Roko last night.
And good to see him have a good game.
I like his game Ė and I donít like his jump shot but I do like his game Ė and I think heís an NBA player.
As I mentioned in the notes in the paper, he was a bit frustrated about his role but he got a chance to play last night and played well.
And coach Scott Skiles noticed.
ďRoko is a guy that every day is the same. I probably should have given him some more looks before this, he certainly earned some more looks now. Heís good with the ball, he made shots and heís got a burst of quickness and you can certainly tell itís evident when heís out there.Ē

Bucks snap Raptors' win streak

Bosh tried to rally the Raptors, both from the bench and while he was in the game. It didnít get him very far, but he maintained he isnít frustrated by the poor team performances.
ďEverybody listens. We were behind a little bit and it was all about trying to get back in the game,Ē Bosh said. ďI was just telling everybody to keep your head up. Itís a long game. We canít get hung up over one run or two quarters, anything like that. We just keep playing hard. We got back in it a little bit.
ďWe gave ourselves a chance, but we didnít stick to our principles,Ē Bosh said.

Thumbs up to Huskies jerseys

Quote:
An unqualified Ė okay check that, Iím genetically incapable of saying anything without qualification Ė thumbs up or whatever for the Toronto Huskies look. Iíve never been big on team jerseys and all that kind of thing. They werenít really widely available when I was a Ďute, though I did have, if Iím recalling correctly, a Terry Metcalfe shirt and later had a football shirt with a No. 5 on it I liked to pretend was Dieter Brockís though it was just a blue shirt with a No. 5 on it. And by the time you could get some coolish team gear I felt like I was kind of past it and it was pretty pricey and Iím a cheapskate, so that made it tough. And then I started covering the NBA, so itís not like I was going to start wearing NBA gear then, even if I wanted to. But the Huskies? Thatís pretty cool. Thatís Canadian basketball heritage. Iím Canadian and Iím into hoop. I see a Toronto Huskies hat in my future. Maybe even my daughterís because she likes dogs.

Bucks dominate as Raptors' offence sputters

Quote:
Talk of spreading the floor permeates the Toronto Raptors to the point where the basketball jargon truly starts to lose meaning.
However, take away a few of Toronto's vaunted perimeter shooters and the meaning comes flying back. Without the threat of the three-point shot, Toronto's offence can look suffocated.
That was very much the case in Milwaukee last evening, as the Raptors lost to the Bucks 117-95 in Milwaukee. Toronto tried to get to the rim, but with the exception of Chris Bosh, no Raptor had the athleticism, experience and space to do so effectively.
