Raptors defence mauls Timberwolves

Quote:
It might not be the prettiest basketball to watch, but Dwane Casey has the Raptors playing a style of basketball that is getting results.

The team is doing it with defence, namely relentless, aggressive play inside. It led to a lot of fouls, but it worked on Monday, resulting in a 97-87 win over the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves.

Amir Johnson and Andrea Bargnani again were the best Raptors. Bargnani led all scorers with 31 points and added nine rebounds, while Johnson, his frontcourt mate, harassed superstar Kevin Love into a brutal night while excelling himself.

Raptors' Gray undergoes corrective heart procedure

Quote:
Toronto Raptors center Aaron Gray underwent a corrective heat procedure on Monday, intended to put an end to recent episodes of an elevated heart rate.

The surgery, called ablation, was performed at Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital by Drs. Jaspal Singh and Eugene Crystal.

Gray is expected to return to action in two weeks.

The Raptors signed the four-year NBA veteran as a free agent on December 11. He appeared in both of the club's preseason games and totaled nine rebounds.

Gray averaged 3.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in 41 games for New Orleans last season. He was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2007 draft and has averaged 3.6 points with 3.5 rebounds in 190 career games.

‘Dog-sick’ Johnson powers Raptors past T-Wolves, 97-87

Quote:
Johnson’s illness was kept quiet all day by the Raptors, who didn’t want the Timberwolves to know a key member of the team’s frontcourt was feeling vulnerable. And after they’d watched Johnson outplay Minnesota’s all-star power forward Kevin Love, they might be hard-pressed to believe he was under the weather.

“Usually when you’re sick, a guy will rise to the occasion,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey said of Johnson. “The guy had the flu this morning and couldn’t go through shootaround. . . . He was dog sick, had the flu and he came out and had a monster game.

“He did a good job with Love in the paint, made him earn every rebound he got, and just did an excellent job for us.”

Bargnani propels Raptors past Ricky Rubio and the Timberwolves

Quote:
That buzz invaded the Air Canada Centre for a game against the Raptors, who happen to have a Spaniard point guard of their own in Jose Calderon and is a close friend of Rubio’s having played together for years on the Spanish national team.

The two went out for dinner in Toronto on Sunday night after Minnesota arrived in town following an afternoon game in Washington against the Wizards. Calderon picked up the tab.

Calderon was hoping for a more favorable disposition in the game – and he got it in the form of a satisfying 97-87 Toronto victory over Minnesota (3-6) that snapped a two-game losing skid for the Raptors (4-5) It was a good way to start off what will be a tough week for the Raptors, who were playing the first of a back-to-back-to-back set that will stretch into five games in six nights before the week’s conclusion.

Bargnani a beast as Raptors beat Timberwolves

Quote:
As the Toronto Raptors’ blowout loss in Philadelphia drew to a close on Saturday night, coach Dwane Casey put some of his starters back in the game.

In the midst of a compressed scheduled, the move seemed to violate every logical rule a coach should abide by. But after two awful games, with the Philadelphia abomination following a horrendous home loss to New Jersey, Casey wanted to send a message to his young team: He would not stand for this. The schedule is tough for everybody. Deal with it.

“I was actually pissed,” power forward Amir Johnson said of the two defeats.

Consider the message received, as evidenced Johnson and his frontcourt mate Andrea Bargnani, who cannot be considered anything but the best player on this team at the moment. Bargnani was monstrous in his 45 minutes on the floor, and the Raptors secured a 97-87 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Washington Wizards: An embarrassment by design

Quote:
The issues facing the Wizards, the NBA’s only winless team, go much deeper than an exasperated parent trying to control his unpredictable brood. There are some things you can’t coach; caring about your job is one of them.

“We have to be real with ourselves,” said veteran Maurice Evans, who organized an air-it-out, players-only meeting a mere six games into the season. “The sense of entitlement that’s here sometimes, I’ve never seen before.”

It’s that bad? Yes, it’s that bad.
