Evans' return should mean minutes crunch

Quote:
Raptors coach Jay Triano might have a bit of a minutes crunch up front to deal with for the final quarter of the season, but expect rookie Ed Davis to get considerable time.
With Reggie Evans set to return as soon as on Wednesday — he went through another full practice on Monday after being out since late November — Triano will get another big body to complicate his rotation.
Starting centre Andrea Bargnani came down with the flu again in London and is questionable for Wednesday’s tilt with the Utah Jazz.
Davis has been excellent in his inaugural NBA campaign and starting power forward Amir Johnson — still just 23 — is in the midst of his finest season yet. Where that leaves pending free agent and team elder statesman Evans is unclear.
Triano said he will make it work and will continue to get Davis on the court.

DeRozan debunks the sophomore jinx

Quote:
When the Raptors selected DeMar DeRozan with the 9th pick of the 2009 draft, the team was cautiously optimistic it had found a key part of its future.
Back-to-back 30-point performances in London last week were the latest steps taken by young DeRozan to justify that faith.
As a sophomore, DeRozan has continued his trend of finishing strong.
The USC product made encouraging progress as a rookie, scoring 8.6 points per game on 49.8% shooting, improving down the stretch (57% shooting over the final 24 games of the season) just as he did during his lone year in college.
In seven games since the all-star break this year, DeRozan has averaged 21.1 points and 3.0 rebounds on 48.8% shooting. He has also nailed his last 35 free throws
DeRozan has become — along with leading scorer Andrea Bargnani — a go-to guy in Toronto, far sooner than most imagined — unless they were certain Chris Bosh would leave town the summer after Year 1.
Forced to step up, the 21-year-old has done so by focusing on the two main weaknesses critics saw in his game — ball-handling and shooting ability.

Feschuk: More snooze, less lose for hush-a-bye Raptors?

Quote:
A recent edition of The New York Times hailed NBA players, above all pro athletes, as the “kings of the nap.”
Here’s what the article, which was excellent and highly recommended, said in summary: Hoopsters need their afternoon siestas because they’re vagabonds and night owls. And here’s what the article didn’t say but might have: Players probably would sleep more at night, but you can get kicked out of the strip club for that!
We’re grossly generalizing and mostly joking, of course. But let’s not put too fine a point on the typical NBAer’s abilities between the sheets. They’re not just great nappers. They’re all-world, all-hours snoozers. Witness Leandro Barbosa, the Raptors shooting guard, who, not long after returning from the team’s historic road trip to England on Sunday, hit the hay. The best he remembers it, he fell asleep at 11:30 on Sunday night and didn’t awake again until 10 on Monday morning. Ten and a half hours in the sack. That’s a few days’ worth of shuteye for a lot of Twitter addicts and something like a week’s haul for some insomniacs.
And how would Barbosa spend Monday afternoon, in the hours after the Raptors’ first post-overseas practice? Well, let’s just guess it started with the letters “zzzzz.”
“If I don’t nap,” Barbosa said, “it’s not a good day for me.”

Raptors giving up? No tanks

Quote:
If you are waiting for the Toronto Raptors to properly tank, you should probably stop doing that.
DeMar DeRozan is not about to miss two to three weeks with a hangnail. Andrea Bargnani is not going to be shut down for the remainder of the season because of an existential crisis.
That, however, does not mean that with a little less than a quarter of their regularseason schedule remaining, the Raptors are going to hunt down each win with a singleminded purpose.
"Over the last five or six games, we've mixed up our [defensive] coverages a little bit. I think that's important," head coach Jay Triano said Monday after the Raptors' first practice following a twogame trip to England. "I don't think it's good for a guy like Ed Davis to go into his second year saying, 'This is how I guard the screen-roll. This is the only way I know how to do it.' I think our goal is to challenge our young players under different learning situations and coverages and put them in different situations on the floor and on the offensive end as well and see what they can do."
To break down some of the coach's jargon: The Raptors are going to try some new things over the season's last 19 games. There will be different offensive plays run, different lineups used, different defensive schemes implemented. All of that will be done in the name of long-term growth. It is possible that will lead to short-term headaches, though. It takes longer for young players to adjust to change than it does for veterans.

Raptor 'eats' cheerleader

Quote:
A SEXY cheerleader got more than she bargained for after picking a fight with Toronto Raptors' mascot when it ATE her!
But don't worry — it's all part of the razzmatazz of the NBA.
During the half-time break of New jersey Nets' clash with the Raptors on Saturday night, mascots from both teams came on to perform for cheering fans.
And the highlight was when the Canadians' raptor devoured one of his side's dancers in front of 19,000 stunned onlookers at London's O2 Arena.
The game itself was a back and forth affair, with the Raptors' snapping at the jersey Boys' heels in a match that needed THREE periods of overtime to decide a winner.
But Toronto's players didn't have as much bite as their mascot and they went on to lose 137-136.

I read somewhere else about how athletes take a lot of naps. I guess it's something to do with pushing their bodies everyday or whatever. Personally i totally don't get the nap thing. The few times i've had a nap during the day i end up feeling like shit.

I'm coming to appreciate naps more and more now that the kid keeps me up at all hours of the night. It was fine when I was 24/25/26 but I am getting too old for this.

Bring on the naps!

Some naps are great.... lazy Sundays, lying around with the dog and a significant other if there is one... A free afternoon.

Some naps do make me feel like crap after, though. It's hit or miss!

The toronto Nap tors. Why hasnt anyone thought of it yet.

I like my naps, i used to take one after work everyday. It refreshed me before i would go to the gym for my evening workout.
Since we have a 7mnth old. when i get off work its my time to be daddy, so the naps dont exist anymore.
Damn i miss those naps

Its actually recommended that you take a 1 hour nap (no more) every day in the middle of the day. Although most people don't.

Most people can't. Employers look down on naps at work

Although, some companies are realizing the importance of employee morale, and have nap rooms, gyms, food courts, games rooms, etc, in their buildings just for employees. Smart.

Mine either. I work from home.

But naps in the afternoon would ruin my productivity. Evening naps are good.

I'm with you Fancy! If I go to sleep during day, I wake up with a headache and usually feeling kind of sick.

I avoid napping at all costs during the day and just push through to the night.

If I nap, the day is over, I'm not leaving the house and if I do- I'm pretty unpleasant
