Evans' debut could be bumped up a game

Quote:
Reggie Evans' long-awaited Raptors debut may come a game earlier than expected.
Raptors head coach Jay Triano wasn't confirming anything Friday, but if Evans continues to progress the way he has the past couple of weeks, Triano said it was possible Evans regular-season debut could come Wednesday against the Philadelphia 76ers, his former club.
Triano likes to get his players going against their former teams -- he believes it's an extra motivator -- but the fact that Wednesday's game is against the Sixers is just an added bonus.
"He's doing more and more each time out," Triano said.

Three Raptor stars poised to return

Quote:
If all goes well between now and Sunday, Triano could be looking at getting three of his injured players — Hedo Turkoglu, Jose Calderon and DeMar DeRozan — back for Sunday’s game.

Keeping everyone happy with more bodies and the same number of minutes to distribute falls to Triano.

“That’s going to be the tough part, and whether guys should come in and feel like they are going to get their same complement of minutes,’ Triano said. “Obviously we have to find ways to get guys a certain number of minutes, but hopefully that’s a good challenge to have. If guys aren’t ready to play, regardless of if they’re coming back from injury or not, we’ve got other guys who can step in and hopefully they can help.”

Turkoglu shuns doctors' advice to wear mask

Quote:
We’ve now gone from “Ball” to “Mask”
Say this about Hedo Turkoglu: He does things his way.
The Raptors Turkish forward revealed Friday that despite requests from both the team and its doctors to don facial protection, he will play Sunday’s game against Sacramento without a protective mask for the fractured orbital bone beneath his right eye.
Turkoglu, who became an internet sensation with his “Ball” interview a week ago, was again the focal point of Friday’s post-practice media session.
After sustaining a slight fracture under his right eye during last Sunday’s win over Indiana when he caught an errant Mike Dunleavy elbow in the face, Turkoglu sat out Tuesday’s tilt in Indiana and Wednesday’s win over New Jersey. He fully expects to return Sunday, but on his terms.
“They want me to play with the mask, but I can’t,” Turkoglu said Friday. “I told them it’s uncomfortable. I just have to do my best without the mask.”
Turkoglu was fitted for the mask earlier this week in Indianapolis. He even tried to work out with the mask on for a half hour to an hour, but came away convinced it wouldn’t work for him.
“It’s not really easy,” Turkoglu said of playing with a mask on. “It’s like a fitted mask, it’s so sensitive. You have a lot of pressure on it. When you move, it kind of bothers you more than usual. It’s not really comfortable. You really have to tighten up to fit it well.”
Turkoglu said if the team doctors had their way, he would be wearing it for six weeks giving the bone time to heal, but in his mind, there’s no guarantee a mask is going to keep him from getting hurt again in any event.
“Even if I’m wearing the mask and someone really elbows me good, I could still be messed up,” Turkoglu said. “Instead of breaking 10 bones, with the mask on I might just break eight. It really doesn’t matter. In the end I wouldn’t be comfortable playing with a mask.
Turkoglu was asked if he would sign a waiver to provide the team some protection since it was his idea not to wear the mask.
“If I have to, I will,” Turkolgu said.

Feschuk: Raptors mired in Mask-gate

Quote:

Turkoglu acknowledged the risk and the possibility of on-court malice.
"Maybe people will try to go after it, or when I'm taking a jumper, put their hands on top of my face. (Opponents) might be really bothering me," he said. "But still, I'd rather not wear it, and not think about it and talk about it anymore. And play my game like nothing happened. I appreciate all the concern but ... I'm a grown man, and I make my own decisions. If (further injury) happens, it happens. There's always risk in life, and I'm ready to take it."
Colangelo, with most of the $52 million still owing on Turkoglu's contract, isn't ready to take the risk.
"We'll have to have another conversation with Hedo regarding the topic," said Colangelo. "We will come to some satisfactory conclusion. If the medical team is telling him he needs to wear the mask, he should be wearing the mask.
"I didn't realize this was going to turn into Mask-gate."

Turkoglu, Kings to face off

Quote:
The 31-year-old Turkish star practised yesterday – not wearing the faceguard – and afterward proclaimed himself fit and ready to play against the Kings, his former team.
“Thank God nobody touched me,” Turkoglu joked, adding: “I felt good.”
Turkoglu has missed most of three games after he suffered a small, non-displaced fracture of the orbital bone under his right eye after slamming into the elbow of Mike Dunleavy of the Indiana Pacers during a Jan. 31 game in Toronto.
Turkoglu has received medical clearance to return to action – but only if the 6-foot 10-inch forward agrees to wear a clear, plastic facemask to protect against any further blows, which could aggravate the injury.
A Toronto sports medicine doctor who has not examined Turkoglu said yesterday that an athlete who has suffered a fracture to the orbital bone – even a small one – should think twice about returning to the lineup without wearing a facemask.
“If the person gets hit there again and the bone gets displaced it would require surgery or else the vision could be affected,” said the physician, who asked that his name not be published. “Even with a mask there's no assurance that further damage won't be done.”

Colangelo says Hedo Turkoglu will have to wear a mask

Quote:
Raptors centre Rasho Nesterovic — who has hit one three-pointer in 12 seasons — was engaging in a long-distance shooting contest with 53-year-old assistant coach Marc Iavaroni at the of practice on Friday.

One of Iavaroni's passes to Nesterovic was errant, and went flying into the area where reporters were standing, clearing the space out.

"That was Marc Iavaroni," Nesterovic said, making sure he did not get the blame.

Of course, one reporter suggested Nesterovic could have moved his feet to stop the high-intensity pass.

"I'm a spot-up shooter," Nesterovic said, deadpan voice in full effect.

Curling, as punishment

Quote:
I'm filling in for Kings beat writer Sam Amick on the Kings upcoming three-game road trip against the Raptors, Knicks and Pistons, and just my luck, I arrived at the downtown hotel early this evening only to learn that ESPN's Canadian affiliate, TSN, is showing a curling event on the main cable channel instead of the NBA double-header. All I can figure is that I am being punished for all those years of ridiculing women who treat their pets like children, until of course, I became one of those women who treat their pets like children. Thus, I was forced to choose between watching one of the silliest of sports (curling) and a movie. I opted for "Amelia," though I did catch the Kings first-half score on the TSN ticker. Even from afar, it looked like another pathetic effort, especially defensively. I also finalized arrangements to meet with Hedo Turkoglu after Raptors practice in the morning. The popular one-time King has hit hard times here, and I'm sure I'll hear all about it. You'll read about it in The Bee on Sunday

RF Girl looks Japanese

Maybe the most smoking SSG I've ever seen. She would be the founder of cougarlife!
