Raptors release Mensah-Bonsu

Quote:
If he clears waivers, which is how the Raptors got their hands on the energetic power forward earlier this season when the Houston Rockets jettisoned the native of London, England, Toronto could conceivably sign Mensah-Bonsu to a 10-day deal.
There’s talk Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow has Mensah-Bonsu on its radar.
“Pops is a great guy and a great teammate who worked hard all the time,’’ Raptors head coach Jay Triano said. “It was a tough call.”
Like a lot of teams, the Raptors have to be very conscious on how every dollar gets allocated.
With Reggie Evans making strides in his recovery from a foot injury, having Mensah-Bonsu around would have been redundant.
By releasing him, the Raptors assure themselves of some cap flexibility, which in turn allows the team to better address their roster.
Mensah-Bonsu was claimed off waivers Nov. 13 after he was released by the Rockets and immediately appeared in a blowout loss to the Nuggets in Denver. He averaged 2.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 6.7 minutes in 16 games with Toronto.

Calderon set for return

Quote:
The Raptors practised in central Florida Tuesday with the team's backcourt front and centre for everyone to debate and dissect.
Barring a setback, Jose Calderon will return to the lineup Wednesday when the Raptors battle the host Magic.
Jarrett Jack has started at the point for the past 13 games, a stretch that saw the Raptors compile an 8-5 record as Calderon rested a sore left hip.
Not known for his hops, Calderon's hip is nonetheless better and there's every indication that Wednesday's tip will usher in Calderon's return.
But it won't be as a starter, that much is certain.
As far as head coach Jay Triano is concerned, why disrupt a good thing, which is the only thing Triano can do.
"I'm sticking with Jarrett," Triano said on a day the Raptors released little-used power forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu. "We'll monitor Jose and see where he's at."
Triano liked what he saw of Calderon, who practised at full strength, but he likes the rhythm Jack has developed with the starting unit and sees no reason to make a change.
At least for now.

Feschuk: Calderon not rocking boat

Quote:
Fast-forward a couple of seasons to now, when Calderon has been out of the lineup with a sore hip for all but seven ineffective minutes of the past 13 games, and this edition of the Raptors, for all their obvious weaknesses of collective will, haven't enjoyed a more prosperous stretch. With Jarrett Jack as the starting No. 1, the Raptors, for various reasons not excluding a favourable schedule, have carved out a win-loss record of 8-5.
True, their grasp on near-respectability is tenuous. But Calderon, if he made the moment about himself, could make the argument, as Ford did, that he shouldn't lose his starting gig on account of an injury, and he'd have a point. He didn't make the point. Jay Triano, the Raptors coach, said he won't start Calderon in Wednesday's game against the Magic – "I'm not going to disrupt the unit that we have right now," the coach said – and Calderon wasn't exactly fuming.
"It's Jay's call. I'm ready to help the team, and keep winning games," said Calderon on Tuesday, after he participated in his first full practice with his teammates since his injury. "If I've got to be coming from the bench the first two, three, four, five games, or whatever, it's Jay's call. He's the coach."

From Deep

Quote:
Let’s presume for a moment Chris Bosh does resign with the Raptors and plays the bulk of his prime years in Toronto. In the wake of him becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer on Sunday it’s worth pointing out that he would likely set franchise marks that might never be touched. If he stays healthy (I know, I know) this year he should get to 10,500 points for his career and if he re-ups for the full six years and knocks out six straight 1,600-point seasons – which is pretty conservative barring major health issues – he should finish that deal with more than 20,000 points. There are only five active NBA to have cracked the 20,000-point plateau and they’re all pretty good: Shaq, Kobe, Iverson, Garnett and Allen. Right now only 32 players in NBA history have done it, though several more are on the verge, including Dirk, Tim Duncan, Paul Pierce and Vince. Bosh will only be 32 when his next contract ends and probably good for maybe another 5,000 points which is where the air gets really rare: Shaq’s the only active player to have got there and only 14 in history have.

Orlando Sentinel

Game preview: Toronto Raptors at Orlando Magic, Wednesday, 7

Quote:
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Will the Magic play with consistent energy despite playing last night? . . . Orlando is 3-0 against Toronto this season and has won each of those games by at least eight points. . . . The teams last faced each other on Dec. 16 at Amway Arena, and the Magic won 118-99 as PF Rashard Lewis scored a game-high 21 points. Five other Magic players scored in double figures.

"If I've got to be coming from the bench the first two, three, four, five games, or whatever, it's Jay's call. He's the coach."

So he's expecting to be on the bench no more than five games. It may be good for the team when the PGs compete for the starting spot.

I wouldn't read too much into what he said other than he was willing to do whatever they wanted him to. I think he was just throwing some arbitrary numbers out there.

He didn't say forever. He had to say 'the first .. games'. He's expecting to be back in the line-up. That's fine as long as he's ready to fight to earn it.

I think "or whatever" was pretty significant.

Given he stated 'whatever' ... he is expressing pride, but at the sametime doesn't want to cause controversy. He's a big boy ... he understands that the best player will start.
Time will tell.
