Bargnani flourishing in Bosh's shadow

Quote:
It was Chris Bosh’s night, no question. He made the big basket when his team needed it most, helping the Raptors ward off a potentially crippling San Antonio comeback.
More impressively, he eclipsed Vince Carter as the highest scorer in team history and then, as expected, dominated the post-game locker room. All of it was richly deserved.
But there was another of the Raptor bigs who had a pretty big Sunday night himself, the kind of night that speaks to what could be if he could just bottle it and bring it out on a consistent basis.
Andrea Bargnani’s night didn’t make headlines like Bosh’s, but it was a headline-worthy night just the same.
The fourth-year Raptor has had headline-worthy nights before but this one was different.
This time, it wasn’t just his offensive numbers that jumped off the post-game scoresheet, although those weren’t inconsequential either — 15 points on a night when scoring was hard to come by.
The number that jumped off the page Sunday night was the five blocks Bargnani had.

Calderon causing conundrum

Quote:
While the team was in Boston on the weekend, Calderon got a full workout at the Air Canada Centre but that was with members of the team's staff and not the other Raptors.
There will unquestionably be issues of timing and cohesion when he's back in the lineup, another reason to think his minutes might be limited.
Also in consideration would be the performance of Jarrett Jack as a spot starter.
Jack is averaging about 12 points and six rebounds in a dozen starts and Toronto is 7-5 in those games, the team's hottest streak of the season. That would make it more amenable to Triano to at least leave Jack in his current role until Calderon gets back up to speed.
The fate of Marcus Banks, who has been solid if unspectacular in a backup role, is also up in the air. It's a virtual certainty that his minutes will be cut whenever Calderon is back but it's possible Triano could find a way to play all three of them together for short spurts against specific matchups.
Banks has averaged about 13 minutes a game while Calderon is out, contributing 4.6 points and 1.1 assists per game.
While Calderon travelled with the Raptors for the mini-road trip that winds up Friday in Philadelphia, so did injured power forward Reggie Evans.
While not close to returning to action or even a full-contact practice, Evans has been doing more and more each day on the court. Last week, he said he had been getting up a lot of shots as part of his rehab and his injured left foot has been able to take the pounding of dunking during some of his workout sessions.
However, it's not expected he'll be back in action before the start of next month at the earliest

Raptors Blog by Doug Smith

Quote:

This is what coaches do
They sit around and watch tape and read stats and reports and try to figure out tendencies and weaknesses and ways to play specific games.
It’s not an exact science and it takes some thought and sometimes some luck but last night, it worked pretty well.
I’m told by an impeccable source that while they were figuring out what to do with the Spurs, assistant coach Micah Nori was parsing the boxscores and saw that San Antonio seldom wins when it makes more fewer than – I think it was – five three-pointers.
He points this out, the coaches discuss it and a game plan is born.
They decide it’s best to “lean” on three-point shooters a wee bit more than usual, to give up contested twos if they must but to not let the Spurs go nuts from beyond the arc.
What happens?
Spurs go 4-13 from three-point range and Toronto wins.
It wasn’t the only reason, of course. But it’s a glimpse at how they come up with specific plans and then try to implement them.

BOSH SHOWS CLASS IN NOT TALKING CASH

Quote:
Chris Bosh has done more than set a Toronto Raptors career scoring standard. So far, at least, he's shown professional athletes how to conduct themselves in a contract year. The Toronto Raptors still seem to be a fatally-flawed unit, but through it all Bosh's pending free-agency eligibility seldom surfaces as a storyline - a blessing in a city that has already lived through the protracted departure of Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay. It's true that is in part because the NBA's regulations make a sign-and-trade scenario a way to even more riches for a potential free-agent, but still, Bosh has avoided the cutesy answers and actions that send out mixed messages.

as oppose to just completely laying off good 3 point shooters and giving them open looks like the raps have done countless times this season. jeez.... you should be guarding 3 point shooters closely EVERY night.

I love how something that they should have freaking done before finally gets done, and it's talked about like some stroke of coaching genius.

So to are the players, and really, at nights end, isn't it the players that matter most?

The only thing I require from an NBA, NHL, MLB...etc Coach is the ability to lead men. Leadership wins battles, it wins contracts, it wins sales, it wins in life.

Does this staff lead? I dunno. I hope it can though.

I totally agree with this statement. I really think fans give coaches way too much responsibility for a loss and too much praise for a win. Especially in the NBA game where for the most part Talent will beat Talent virtually every game. Mainly by the way the game is called and the fact there is only so many players on the Roster than can make an impact.

I always thought Triano was a good coach. His actions this year really let me down but he still has time.

Actually, they taught me nothing about basketball. I was no good at the time and chose to sit out whenever I could.

So instead, one of the cute coaches taught me about boys.

He was waaay too old for me at the time. But now looking back, I realize that this cocky older man coulda been SJ.

I'm still bad at basketball.
