Raptors D. Smith: Ujiri not looking to tank

Quote:
Well, how about that

The big and best thing about that trade? The hard work is done.

I cannot believe Masai was able to so quickly move the albatross-like contract of Rudy Gay; itís astonishing to me that he got it done before the season is six weeks old.And that, truly, is the easy part of whatever the GM has up his sleeve because itís far easier to move small money than big in the NBA these days and now heís got a whole lot of little things to put in play if he wants.

But what does it mean, really?

I can make a case that this team might be, in some ways, marginally better right now than it was Sunday morning: The cloud of possible trades has been lifted so they might play more free; itís obvious which of DeRozan or Gay they value more so it clears up an awful lot offensively; thereís plenty of flexibility for more moves.

Iím not saying for sure it is better and there are still many issues to be addressed but to think Masai was giving up on this season with this trade is ridiculous, to me.

It could very well turn out that they struggle but I donít think so, I think they have a more traditional offence now that there is one less ball-stopper on the floor, I think they are better at the backup point guard spot, I think this might free up more opportunities for Valanciunas and Amir.Sometimes, really, less is more.

And I know Masai. He is not of the mind of playing to lose, it goes against a lot of what he stands for and believes in, he will tweak and make more bold moves and know that everything is a gamble and that some will fail.
This whole nebulous ďtankĒ thing makes me, frankly, sick. First off, it takes years to truly tear at team down, it doesnít happen in one or ever two transactions. Itís a fake word that over-simplifies a process; a trite expression invented for no other reason than to irk me, I bet.

And if you donít have those years, or that predilection of getting truly horrible, you make trades simply to further your cause for what you want the roster to become and see how it works out.Masai, with this deal, has rid himself of his most troubling contract and, in some ways, made his team better. Itís a step, one step in a long process of changing things.
Rudy Gay: Astonishing that Raptors GM Masai Ujiri was able to trade albatross contract so early: Smith | Toronto Star

Can we just ban posting all Doug Smith articles? It brings the quality of posting down and makes everyone less intelligent after reading his drivel. I value most Raptors fans opinions over Doug's. He's that out of the loop.

While i agree he's a moron, i don't think he's far off here.

Remember when he said Augustine would challenge Lowry for minutes?

No, because his articles have been trash for years, and he's completely out of the loop when it comes to the goings on of the team. He's the definition of a guy who's just collecting a paycheck at this point. He has no substance to his articles, and never breaks any news anymore. In other words, he sucks.

This is purely an opinion piece by Doug, who most know is out to lunch.

If this is Masai's only move, then fine, Doug is probably right. But I think he's writing this on the basis of this being the only move, which most people doubt is the case.

While that may be true I read pro-tank articles every day and 9 times out of 10 they contain no valuable or new information. Everyone claims they can look inside MU's mind but at the end of the day no one can.

People say the Gay trade is a sign of MU wanting to tank (= lose more games) but I disagree. None of us have a clue what MU is thinking, outside of getting rid of our big contracts which is a good thing regardless if you're tanking or not.

Doug Smith is no favourite of mine but I do see where he is coming from here.

Masai Ujiri likes to see his teams play well.

This move doesnt help the tank, that is clear. We play better without gay and got more depth. IF we are to tank, more pieces, especially Lowry need to go.

In the one game, we played better. But to small a sample size. In losing Gay, we do lose a guy who can score the ball and it clutch when the games on the line.

according to Stein:
Quote:
The Raptors, meanwhile, have been expected to be active in the trade market since the season began, with ESPN.com reporting since Nov. 1 that everyone on the roster apart from prized center Jonas Valanciunas had been made available.

New Raptors front-office boss Masai Ujiri has managed to trade away Andrea Bargnani and now Gay over the past six months to create financial flexibility going forward and — with Toronto apparently determined to avoid any accidental success in the Atlantic Division — is said to be happy to surrender veteran point guard Kyle Lowry next.

The priority in Toronto is clearly finishing as high as possible in the lottery with Canadian sensation Andrew Wiggins and several other top prospects expected to be available to teams picking at the top of the June draft. Lowry is in the final year of his contact at an affordable $6.2 million and believed to be eminently available because he’s not part of Toronto’s future plans.

the ball movement is so much better, the whole season when he is the only starter not in. I remember in one of the earlier games this season I mentioned how I preferred fields just because he passes it
