Arrow D. Smith: Triano earned his keep yesterday

Quote:
Let’s say you’re an NBA head coach and you’re on the road and your team’s playing its third game in four days against a pretty good team.

You look down the bench and see:

Ed Davis, rookie; Sundiata Gaines, still learning the names of his teammates; Joey Dorsey, game but under-sized; Solomon Alabi, rookie.

There are no shooting guards or small forwards. No experience, no shooters, no nothing.

And someone your team is in the game until the final seconds?

I tell ya, they should have fully guaranteed the third year of Jay’s contract last night for the way he managed that motley crew.

“We tried to keep it as ugly as we could.”

I like Triano, I'm glad someone wrote something positive about him for once.

But... bring on the jackals. Y'know they're comin'.

Triano IS a good coach. He just got to work on motivating the team to defend consistently.
No coach is perfect

I have no delusions that this team would be great if healthy, but man you have to admit when we were 8-11 and Peja played 2 games, averaged 10 mins and 11 points there was some reason to think we'd be challenging for a playoff spot at least.

Now with some of our most talented guys hurt the team is still staying in games. This could be the best scenario for this team... have a lot of injury problems so that the young guys play..and there is a built-in excuse for losing...we get a high pick and voila a rebuilding year that doesn't feel like one

Doug Smith's style bug anyone else? or am I just a dill hole?

Good on Vince, he didn't take responsibility for his greatness, nor do the other 99% of the populace.

Doug illumninates a very strong problem through Jarrett Jack's comments. Role definition is huge. I think Triano has done a better job thus far, and a prime example is with Jose over Bayless. They are treating Bayless as a young pg that has alot to learn and that is exactly what he is. It's good to see. Internal competition is one thing, but having so many players not accepting their roles has only resulted in alot of chuckers.

JT would have earned his keep if he got him self ejected on behalph of the team in order to make some sense of the really really bad calls the refs made down the stretch, hell he should have said something in the post game interview & got a fine or suspension!!!

Talk about giving the Hornets 6 more chances to score & the Raptors 2 less points!!!

It's BS & something should be said!!!

That wouldn't be a great team even if they were healthy. They could be around .500 and could probably be in the playoffs but yeah injuries has really hurt this team.

People like to blame Jay for poor defense but look at that group of players. I'm sorry but even great coaches can't just magically turn a shitty defensive group into a strong one. They have however played well offensively and defensively at times but the team is so young and inexperienced that it hurts them down the stretches like the NO game for example.

The funny thing is, the Raptors frequently overachieve when the rotation is tight. Jay looks better when he has fewer decisions to make.

it also has to do with the fact that the players know they have to step up for the absence of other players and those who rarely get a chance to play know its their time to shine in-game to show the coaches they deserve minutes
and some guys also know there aren't other guys behind them to sub into the game if they do things wrong, they know they can play through mistakes

the only people i see making this team look good much more quicker is jerry sloan, popvich or larry brown, but those three would take at least 2 years to make this team into a playoff team just because we have one starter quality player

Exactly, take away most of his options and he screws up less. It's not rocket science to have 8 healthy bodies + Alabi and play 5-6 of them for 40min. What else was he gonna do?

Doug Smith works under the table for MLSE. He always pretty much reinforces the MLSE viewpoint and never goes against it.

Jay doesn't make decisions. That's his only problem, but it's a biggie. They should be trying to make every game ugly. That's how teams with a deficit of talent compete and win, or at least compete and head to future with a solid culture intact. But Jay needs to wait for injuries to shorten the lineup and play the guys he should be playing.

I still hold out hope that the Linas injury situation is mostly a means of sitting him down and allowing him to save face while his value takes less of a hit for trade purposes. That would mean that a light came on and stayed on.

I think Triano is a pretty good coach as well for the simple fact that he does a lot with what he has (but I'm not surprised at his critics.. look at the people going after Maimi's coach -- gimme a break).

I actually think the silver lining to this reduced squad size is that these guys are getting a LOT of time to learn to play together without much interference. I think it's led to some great basketball.
